I'm getting serious about making a career as an artist and it's extremely intimidating, but your videos have been putting me at ease and helping me find my confidence
I love that you recognize that you took on too much work between the galleries and your commissions. You seem incredibly driven to succeed. There is no way I could be comfortable doing these vids---horrible social anxiety disorder for me! Love watching your UA-cam vids and all the content. Bravo!
Why are you anxious in your own home filming yourself? That's weird, since there's literally nobody there. Social anxiety is only triggered by other people's presence. Film yourself just for your own pleasure. Post those! You don't even have to talk, just show how you paint.
Thanks so much....again, Lori. 🙏 One thing you said on one of your previous videos was how important it is to have a “body of work.” So I’ve been saying to myself over and over “body of work, body of work, body of work, and I’ve been busy creating, painting, a lot , (I’m drawn to abstract but I like traditional & contemporary too...lots of floral and nature and portraits,) getting supplies to paint more, getting into a groove, still finding my way, but I’m beginning to feel more confident that I can one day do well in selling my art. I have a website that I have just let “wither on the vine,” so that’s where I’m gonna start and put my art there and also rename the site in my name. In the meantime, I’m getting ready to submit my digital work to a site that I use for vector graphics myself. They invite “contributors” so why not. I look at the stuff that’s there and think “I can do that.” There’s some technical things I have to work out, but they can assist with that ( like format, size and resolution.) This is a good way for me to begin to get some discipline about just submitting my work to a business and there’s not a lot of risk. If they don’t take it, they’ll surely tell me why and I can give them what they need or move on. If they do take it, I may get some pocket change when someone uses my designs. I will also be checking out some local easy shows and fairs that might be a good entry point for me to get my feet wet in shows & sales. Thanks again. You may never know how much the wisdom you pass on may really help someone in their art journey, but you can be assured, it will.👍🎨😄🙏
That's wonderful Nancy! I love that you are thinking out side of the box to gain extra income. There are so many ways to make money then just selling originals, so I appreciate you stating that in your comment. I like the way you explained the whole gallery/art show thing!! Although it’s hard to part with commission $, if your work isn’t “seen” by potential buyers, you’re not going to sell much. I think at the beginning of our art careers we tend to be a bit attached to our work on a personal level. I know that I still like to know my buyers, but it IS a business. I imagine that once you’ve got a big enough body of work, you’ll get that out of your system! Love your tips and insight-thank you!!
Yep at the end of the day it is a business. Doing art shows are gruelling, so much hard work to load and set up the work not to mention 12 hours on your feet for sometimes 3-4 days straight. Then talking to hundreds of people each day and then tear down and unload. LOL all with no help. Art in a gallery is paint the work and drop it off and collect the money once it sells. LOL The 50% commission is more times than not, worth it.
Just throwing out there that you might have a local art house or artist coalition who *do* offer classes/workshops on art business topics. It probably varies from location to location but if you're not looking you're not going to find it. This was a really informative video, thank you so much. As someone in their 50's just starting their body of work, it helps de-mystify the process. Its also great to go to shows and see lots of mature artists. Many are established of course, but there were also lots who were only a year or two into their journey. "It's never too late to become what you might have been." I love that quote!

Thank you for this info. I've been wavering about re-applying to a popular event in Mass...mixed feelings about what it means to do an art fair, (I've never done one). This reminds me about the important things: showing the work, connecting with other artists, exposure to gallery owners...I have resisted the idea of 'sellable' art like the punk that I am. However, as time goes by and I begin to sell some things, I have to admit - to sell work to someone (not a family/friend) is, regardless of how idealistic I tend to be, an affirmation. I don't want to just make my work in a closet of me. I want it to be enjoyed in the world. (and I want to be able to support the habit).
Great video, been to a few art shows over the years and their a great place to meet and correspond with other artists, potential customers etc...I even participated in the T.O.A Toronto Outdoor Exhibition back in 1987. What's a "grandma friend"? Is this your actual grandmother or just a geriatric friend? Also.. Are you a selling artist now, can you live on profits from your art business?
@@mikesamovarov4054 I'm in the process of building multiple streams of income with my art. I don't make enough off of my art to live on, but I plan on creating courses, and products that will help people. Hopefully I'll land some brand deals and affiliates along the way too.
Thank you so much for making these videos . I am sharing them with my daughter who is taking fine art at the U of L. She finds them invaluable. This is stuff they don't teach, but really should.
Lori, thank you so much for valuable info. And also important, for being so real and vulnerable in your vids. I feel strangely like I’ve made a connection, even tho you have no idea about me.
Love your art and your videos Lori. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. So very helpful when thinking about my goals and working with galleries. Here’s a question for your next Q & A video: Since you sell your artwork through galleries and your own website, does your pricing stay the same on both? Or do you not post a painting on your website that is currently hanging in one of your galleries? And how many galleries do you currently have that represent your work? How much work does each gallery expect you to give them each year? Thank you for responding to these questions. I’ve never heard any artist talk about this.
All my galleries are listed in each of the video descriptions. I talked in the video about pricing, that they should be consistent with the prices you have in the galleries. And how many pieces each gallery wants depends on the gallery. As to how many each year depends on how they are selling...the more they sell the more often you need to supply them.
Very informative video- I didn't have a clue about a lot of stuff you talked about in relation to galleries. I am just not there yet. But so much useful information!! I am so pleased to find someone wiling to talk about the business aspects of selling art- either on line or in a gallery- because it can be frustrating starting to sell and honestly not having a clue---because all we want to do is make enough to buy more to make more!! LOL
Thanks so much. I guess that would depend on which ones. There are lot of people trying to start up online virtual galleries knowing that most shows were cancelled so I would do your research and make sure they are reputable sites. Same with Art competitions. There is always a fee to get so it would depend mostly on which ones.
@@mikesamovarov4054 I watched and commented on the video 2 years ago. But I am sure if I commented I must have gained some knowledge from it and I was appreciating that. And yes, I am a selling artist. I cannot live on profits at this time because I am only doing it part time. I am a busy mom of two kids and many other roles I play. Once and if I have more time for art, I guess I can answer that better.
Hi Lori! So much great info - You make me snort laugh with your side comments. I was clapping with you! :-D I have a question about pricing - Actually, I have about 50 questions! It is definitely the thing that gives me the most angst. I don’t want to over/or under price my work but if you’re selling on your own then how do you figure this out in a way that’s fair to the purchaser and myself. I tried to find a straight formula or answer to this - it seems so subjective. Do galleries set the price for your work when you are under contract with them? If so, I think that would be a relief! Also, I would love to hear more about how you speak about pricing with interested purchasers. Do people tend to barter over pricing? Thank you again - Cheers!
Hehehe I crack myself up when I'm trying to film these videos!!! My mom is a clapper and her clapping and squealing drove me bananas when I was younger, so the fact that I do it and really didn't know I was doing it, kills me every time 😂😂😂😂 I think my next video, which I was hoping would be today, will be about pricing. One video a week I can manage but trying to get two out is a challenge.
Dont worry about the camera. You are such a beautiful woman and have a great way of presenting yourself. Really. Your hair looks great and your teeth are also beautiful. Besides that, i watched your video on starting with just one color. Thank you for that great tip. But even that little demo came out pretty good.

Great information Lori. I appreciate your willingness to share your growing knowledge base. Question: Do you have pieces of figurative work to share? Can be old or new. I like what little I see of the piece behind you in this video. Thx, and continued success. Rene'
Thank you for all of your wisdom.. I've recently been working on drilling down my color palate to have a cohesive look & this was helpful. I'm not sure of pricing & I struggle with will people like it or the ones who are very vocal who don't.
Incredible information! Doubt my art will ever be to that scale. My work is definitely interesting, and a cohesive set of work. But a $100 bucks here and there...is about it. My best time is outdoor art festivals. I sell tons in a weekend.

Thank you again for everything you bring in your videos. Love your work. Love your content. Take care.
Elderly parents and a husband is still a lot to manage. Maybe one day I'll share a day in the life lol but every day can be a bit different from the last day. This morning was answering question that came in from last night. Created two labels to ship out paintings, then instagram work. Moved on to working on the youtube video I uploaded this morning. Then lunch time and answering questions and comments from UA-cam plus Instagram post. And now I'm finally about to get my day started with paintings...🥰
I love that painting behind you!
Thank you!!! I collected her.. 🥰
My grandma friend has art all over Charlotte nc, she seen me and offered me yesterday that she will talk to the women in the art gallery to put my work up. I just need to have 5 paintings by this week. IM SCARED. this video helped a lot with thinking. Thank you so much :,)
What's a "grandma friend"? Is this your actual grandmother or just a geriatric friend? Also.. Are you a selling artist now, can you live on profits from your art business?
Thank you for sharing so much!

Thank you, again for good advise. And now I could get a glimse of the painting behind you :))

@@mikesamovarov4054 I'm in the process of building multiple streams of income with my art. I don't make enough off of my art to live on, but I plan on creating courses, and products that will help people. Hopefully I'll land some brand deals and affiliates along the way too.

So much information in this 👍❤ Thank you.
Thank you so much for making these videos . I am sharing them with my daughter who is taking fine art at the U of L. She finds them invaluable. This is stuff they don't teach, but really should.
Oh my gosh that’s so great!! Thank you and I couldn’t agree more. Maybe one day they schools will catch on. 😊
Is she making a living with selling her art now?
@@mikesamovarov4054 She graduated and is now designing and selling jewelry. 🙂
Lori, thank you so much for valuable info. And also important, for being so real and vulnerable in your vids. I feel strangely like I’ve made a connection, even tho you have no idea about me.
hahaha I appreciate that very much. I think the key to making a good video is just being myself.
Thank you for the information! You are doing a great job with these videos! Keep it up!!!
Glad you like them!
Lori, I'm not there yet... I've only lopped off one ear so far! your videos are inspiring though.
😂😂😂 Well don't lop off the other one....Keep Painting
Great information. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

LOL
Glad you found my channel Brandy!!! I hope that I can post more videos to help others in the future 😊
I have my first exhibition in February 15th in Kolkata. Also thank you for sharing these information.
Thank you so much, Lori, I love your art, personality and videos! 💜

Hi Lori. Thnx for your knowledge and passion. You are a teacher and inspiration. What do you think about virtual gallery? Art competition?
Thanks so much. I guess that would depend on which ones. There are lot of people trying to start up online virtual galleries knowing that most shows were cancelled so I would do your research and make sure they are reputable sites. Same with Art competitions. There is always a fee to get so it would depend mostly on which ones.
Thank You Lots and lots to think about.

I have a question about pricing - Actually, I have about 50 questions!
My mom is a clapper and her clapping and squealing drove me bananas when I was younger, so the fact that I do it and really didn't know I was doing it, kills me every time 😂😂😂😂
I think my next video, which I was hoping would be today, will be about pricing.

Hi Lori, I’m from Toronto but live in Seattle now. I was wondering if you could share some links to some of the shows you attend. Just curious to get a feel for what those shows are like and the submission process. Thanks!
I can toss you the names of the two big shows - I don't have the links handy.
The Artist Project - Toronto
The Toronto OutDoor Art Fair - TOAF

Great information Lori. I appreciate your willingness to share your growing knowledge base. Question: Do you have pieces of figurative work to share? Can be old or new. I like what little I see of the piece behind you in this video. Thx, and continued success. Rene'

hahaha thank you!!!! lol
Thank you for all of your wisdom.. I've recently been working on drilling down my color palate to have a cohesive look & this was helpful. I'm not sure of pricing & I struggle with will people like it or the ones who are very vocal who don't.
You are so welcome!the internet can be cruel at times. There will always be haters. pay them no attention.
Are you a selling artist now, can you live on profits from your art business?
Incredible information! Doubt my art will ever be to that scale. My work is definitely interesting, and a cohesive set of work. But a $100 bucks here and there...is about it. My best time is outdoor art festivals. I sell tons in a weekend.
Oh that's great!!! you found something that works for you and that's what matters. Outdoor shows are awesome.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist I do love my outdoor festivals. I just hope to support my family from my art someday, and I am nowhere near that now.
Keep chasing the dream!! Cause they can come true ❤️
Your videos are always so helpful and informative, and this one was no exception! I'm just starting out as an artist, and today I submitted my first ever application for a juried show, so this vid was very relevant to my current hopes and plans. Thank you!

How did you do in that show?
Thank you!
