good topic. cheap maintenance can save a lot of money. on fly wheel make sure you dont go to long of a bolt because they can damage stator. give cometic a call, they can get you aluminum or copper base gaskets, once in a while the xcr can have base gasket issues. and the copper are resuable.
Good point that I forgot to mention about not threading your bolt in to far. Lol that's why I'm not a good teacher I forget to mention some really important stuff that is just everyday practice with me. 😁
I double up wrenches a lot. Great tip when you need a little more leverage and don't have room for a breaker bar. Thanks for sharing your tips. I will probably send out my water pump this summer on my 97 XCR 600.
Ouch... is all I can say about that engine. Depending on the sled, it might be headed to the grave. Time to crack open a couple Busch Lights! Oh and Happy Birthday BTW...
I told my cousin about running am older sled and taking care of those preventive maintenance things. It'd like the ski dogs with those Isoflex bearings. Change em. So good advice Todd!!
I have 4 pumps that I should probably send to Tim, before I take my old triples out again. It is a good friendly reminder. Thanks Todd. Yikes that poor old 800 is in rough shape. I am in a similar position with my xcr 800, Not quite that bad, at least my heads are good. But what do ya do, ya gotta save em.
Not good at all! That there is the reason I did a crank up build on my Ultra last summer… pulled the pump to find bearing shards on my drive gear… no good. Split the case to find that the missing ball bearings had shot peened the inside of the crankcase… Definitely recommend getting them pumps rebuilt!
I thank you very much for this motor saving public service anoucment..... I can feel your pain... and will have a Beer for you and hope it makes you feel better ;-) ;-) Love to watch this stuff you put up !!!

Todd I tried the email link for Tim and it bounced back as an invalid email! Need to have a pump rebuilt for a 1997 xcr 600 and would like to contact him about getting something set up. Love all your sleds and videos! Thanks for any information you can give me.
Hi is there anyway you could let me know where your buddy gets the seals for the water pumps on a 600 XLT and the 800 xcr I want to rebuild them on my two sleds thanks
Oh man... This video just potentially ruined my day. 😅😬 I bought a 2000 XCR for $500 that's in mint condition... aside from the fact it died due to what they think was the water pump failing and having it over heat. I've been prepping to do the top end but now I'm assuming this could get ugly quick.
@@toddclyne3493 Luckily, and I say that reluctantly, I'm friends with Terry Gilomen down here near Northfield, who has just about everything I'll need to bring it back to life but the cost looks like it could be astronomical if it is what that is... I guess I'll start by pulling the water pump and see if it let loose or if I got lucky. For $500, it just might be worth it to bring back this beast of a muscle sled. 🤷🏻
@@toddclyne3493 it was a NOS OEM pump. Spinning 9k rpm I’d expect it to last a little longer than normal! Keep my coolant reservoir marked, belly pan clean, and ears keen. If you let these triple/triples get greasy, it makes it that much more difficult for preventative maintenance.
@@toddclyne3493 just curious from datapoints on how long these were typically lasting from the factory, a lot of variables but median averages from good sources like yourself are a great reference.
Right from the factory I've been told they were supposed to last 3k to 5k miles, however that's provided the machine gets riden constantly, and is started off and on during off season. When they sit especially without coolant they dry out and it's only a matter of time.
Side note. if your using a cheap oil. Your gonna get expensive. Buy a great Synthetic oil Like Shell or Amsoil pay it now and save it later. There are people who have reviews on here of the performance of oils.

How often should you have the pump rebuilt?
Once you do it should last a long time. Just think it just went over 20 years on the first factory build
