You made a comment on Facebook saying you are done with the train so I made a response but got silenced and my comment deleted so I'll say it here:
Millions of people still have to rely on the subway to get to their jobs and destination. Some unfortunate ones will be victims of subway crime as nefarious as this one.
Fortunately, statistics show that an average of 6 out of roughly 2 million daily subway riders are victimized.
So if we include the unreported crimes as being extrapolated by 10 times, you get 60 victims out of 2 million riders, a chance which is extremely small that something bad will happen to you when you ride the subway given that you are vigilant and are not at all distracted or looking vulnerable.
This particular subway line in which this shooting occurred (A line) goes through some really bad and low income neighborhoods in Brooklyn so that is a huge factor in significantly increasing one's chances of becoming a victim.
As of now, I will still continue riding the subway but will avoid lines that go through bad neighborhoods such as the Lexington line and A lines. As much as possible, I'd ride the NYC ferry with my scooter to extend its range except during early morning hours when I must take the subway to get to Penn Station in order to get to work.
I am fortunate to have a subway line that does not go through bad neighborhoods and I only take it if it is the fastest route to work or back home.
Bottom line is, as long as one avoids going through bad neighborhoods and do all your street know-how to minimize vulnerability, you'll be fine in the subway and always keep your head on a swivel. If you spot the first sign of trouble, even as petty as someone starting an argument, you get out of that subway car at the very instant and you essentially vanquished your chance of becoming a victim!
