After listening to soo much of bulb's stuff, you begin to think and write stuff which grooves to 8, 16 and the some different non multiples of 8. But then again, stuff like this will just blow your head off.
I ripped the fuck out of the inside of an old house with a sledgehamer listening to this song. Flailing violently and wildly at everything around you is the best way to enjoy.
@MakoMusicOfficial This is also a plausible solution if you call what I see as triplets in a 4/4 measure, eighth notes in a 6/8 measure (two measures of 6/8 is the same thing as 12/8), which is perfectly acceptable. Glad to see someone else realizes the simplicity of this groove. While it may have some syncopation, the best way to notate it is in 4/4, or 6/8.
@MikeyTdrums i was talkin about meshuggah. and yes ive listened to plenty of bulb to hear melody in his songs like his stuff in haunted shores and all new materials.
@anonymous564 I'm sure he does, but the particular riff that "some guy" decided to try and dissect appears to have no structure besides syncopated 4/4 (intense groove). A 4 measure loop of syncopated 4/4 to be exact. These 4 measures consist of groups of 2 or 4 triplet beats separated by 1 triplet rest. I would notate the rhythm like: 2-4-2-4-2-4-2-4-2-2-4-4. So yeah. Feel free to slap some wacky time signature on that sequence. I'ma stick to 4/4.
LOL last night i turned off my lamp, lied down in my bed, switch on my ipod, started listening to this song and i swear to god the filament in my lamp exploded !!
@elasticmachinery - Not even close... The drums were in 4 for the first half a minute, but the guitar riff was switching up 3/4 and 5/4. After that it's choas.
@silverwolf122 You dont even need to go through that much trouble for this stuff. Its on bulb's Soundclick page available for download. Get it from there....
i think if they did take a theory class, they would understand the concept of your math. There just trying to be complicated because that's the cool thing to do.
@davviscool i agree but the music is so unique that how can you not like it? it may not have any melody but its something thats never been done. thats why everyone likes them hah. sorry for being a prick
dude are you freaking kidding me. look up Letter Experiment or Ow my feeling or if you want older melodic stuff listen too lets be equals MELODY IS EVERYWHERE IF YOU LISTEN
This reminds me of the 50's when everyone did everyone else's songs but recorded them for themselves and made their own money. There is nothing original about this. I would love to hear something brand spanking new that doesn't make me think it's another band I've already heart.
@011212454 I'm not trying to be rude, but aren't you now doing what the other guy did? Trying to look cool by dissecting the riff? I agree with what you said, but all i said was that he does figure out some of his things with notation But yeah, bulb himself says that he almost always sicks to 4\4; "Something you can bob your head to"
@tootlesflubb that's not really true at all. If you apply some elementary math operations you can deduct that 3 + 5 = 8. So really, all you said was "hai guise the pattern falls back on the down beat ever 8th beat hurr im a durr". There's no apparent accent on the 4th beat (which is where your so called 5/4 would start). And If you asked misha he would just tell you "Dude I just groove for 8 or 16 beats or so and repeat!". Stop trying to look cool because you took a theory class in highschool...

@highonfire20 Periphery is the name of his band. Bulb is the nickname of the guitarist.

2 people have probably suffered the same fate as the guy in the pic.
Misha Mansoor for Prime Minister.
@MikeyTdrums so what if you're a drummer? doesn't mean that you're not as good as a guitarist when it comes to understanding or identifying melody :)
6/8, almost, instead of 4/4. Swing time, baby!
@011212454 The song is in 12/8 dude.
@MikeyTdrums and ow my feelings is like on of the least melodic bulbs songs too
this song is GODS LEVEL ahahahha
@davviscool i agree but the music is so unique that how can you not like it? it may not have any melody but its something thats never been done. thats why everyone likes them hah. sorry for being a prick
@011212454 He talks about polyrhythms all the time. I'm fairly sure he works out some if not alot of his rhythms.. Not just grooving
ALMOST all of this is 4/4, except at 0:45- it alternates between a phrase in 10 and almost the exact same thing but in 11.
@4whitesharpEz really? i thought it was pretty melodic.
