The Port Mann Bridge/Highway 1 mega-project

www.journalofco... The Port Mann Bridge and Highway 1 project is one of the biggest in British Columbia history.
The original Port Mann Bridge spans the Fraser River in the Lower Mainland, connecting the cities of Surrey and Coquitlam together. Because of the rapidly expanding population of the area, construction of a new bridge began in 2009.
The new bridge dwarfs the old structure, with the second biggest cable span in the western hemisphere and twin towers reaching 75 metres above deck level.
Along with the new bridge several overpasses will be built and many overpasses, underpasses and interchanges will be improved.
The cost of construction, including the Highway 1 upgrades is approximately $2.46 billion.
While the project was originally slated for completion by 2013, it will be completed ahead of schedule, with December 2012 as the estimated time of completion.

yes, take another look @2:21, and check out some of the older bridges around the world as well as the newer bridges in Asia that are just a bridge like the knight st. bridge or Oak st. bridge...nothing extra fancy about them and yet they'll take you across the Fraser river or the Ganges river tHE NEW pORT mANN CAME WITH AN ADDED PRICE CAUSE IT'S EXTRA FANCY, nothing like the Knight st. bridge which was built on a budget.

Now lets have the facts and figures when it comes to taking down the older Port Mann bridge incl clean upof the surrounding landscape???WHAT IS THE COST? I always believed there was nothjing wrong with the older bridge which is newer than San-Fransicos Golden Gate Bridge & yet do they talk about taking the bridge down/No. Friends from Frisco were surprized that a 5 lane bridge as old as it isn't, is to be taken down without it first bein twin'd and put to further use.....dissappointing.

The cost can't be calculated by just money. Without this bridge a lot of my activity just cant happen.

That's a lie. There are several Asian bridges that are as "fancy" as the port mann that I found just by using google images. Don't forget that a lot of their money goes towards building pointless 500 meter tall buildings. Bridges like Knight and Oak are less fancy because they don't have and ships that are too large going under them. Bridges like Alex Fraser, Patullo, and Port Mann need to have a higher elevation and wider gap to allow large ships to pass through.
