- Having learn't the art of forming scenery with cardboard strips, plaster cloth and rock moulds, I dive into the more artistic realm of carving your own rocks out of plaster!
Know you all know I am a complete newbie when it comes to scenery....so learning this technique is not going to be easy or quick, but I am encouraged by my first attempts. A brief overview of constructing the hill is given before we get into the rock carving.

For a first attempt that looks good to me, I'd be more than happy with it. It's like anything in life, if you've been doing it long enough it looks easy.
Thank you ! Yes, it's all about practice and I do need some photos so I have an idea of what I want! Also trying it on a very hot day was not ideal..LOL

There sure are Anthony! I would love to try the pink foam, as it breaks into great looking rocks , but it is too dear down here and you won't find it in rubbish piles!

Thanks Matthew! The Dash8's will have a small BNSF patch applied when I get the decal sheet, but the boss's wan't them left in the WB paint scheme.....as they should be!.

Greg good to see you back, he is good at rock work, when I get to rocks on my layout I will be using this technique. I do think it would be useful to have a few reference photos with images of the sort of rock you are aiming for pinned up while you are working I think it helps to keep it looking real world. I would also say any large areas of rock change so allow that to come into your work. Not just rock types and structures but colour and weathering. Looks like an earl spring is on the way here 10-12C at the moment very different from you. Keep up the good fight Neil
Thanks Neil, its' big shoes to fill but I'm happy with the results so far. The pic's will certainly be a benefit and I also will try to copy some of my cast rocks as I can have them next to the new work. That is a good tip that rocks and colours change , you get focussed on one type...I will keep that in mind!

Interesting technique, Gregg. I've not seen it done that way before.
It's a new one for me , but there are places that rock moulds don't quiet fit and this gives you the exact rock for the space.

Looks great, love the concept with the cardboard and crosspieces, cheaper than purple or pink foam insulation (4x8 sheets) You make looks so easy. One suggestion, before the drys, I used my son’s squirt gun to show erosion or a wire brush. Again looks great can’t wait to see it the entire layout landscaped. I can see you have been bitten by the landscaping bug don’t resist, let take you over! Lol Terry from Nebraska.
Thanks Terry! Ok for a first attempt and I can always go over it with static grass..LOL. I love the squirt gun idea but I made it too wet due to the heat. I'll wait a few weeks and try again so I can have the plaster more firm .You're right, I do like the scenery thing , but I don't have the patience to do all the super fine details, but we'll see how we go?

Gregg, Nice to have you back. I do want to point out to you that you were photo bombed by what looked to be a small spider who scampered across your plaster from 5:29 - 5:51 into the video. Great video as always. Cheers! Bill
Thank you Bill! Scenery is a big learning curve but is very rewarding and you get to see the results...unlike good benchwork and complicated wiring!! I did see the spider in the edit but not until then...pity it will grow up and bite me in six months..LOL.

Really nice Gregg, agreed that German dude is a master but your effort there is pretty amazing too. Some reference piccies would help to show strata which may help.... agree with the air con comments looks way too sticky

Hi Gregg,
I was was working on a layout recently where the budget was some what tight , rather than using plaster cloth .
We decided on using blue cleaning wipes the ones you either get on a roll or packet form, cost effective and does the same job especially if you have a lot f real estate to cover.
Anyway just a thought , I noticed that it was getting a little hot in the man shed , still not tempted to get some air conditioning in there? mmmmmm may be , yea go on you know you want it .
Its either that or Kegg LOL.

I did look at the wipes, but that means having plaster mixed and as I do small areas, it would get very messy! On a large or club layout, I think the wipes are a good idea but I'm happy with the , albeit, more expensive plaster cloth.

Greg yes that is always a danger when working on detail it sucks you in. You need to stand back and look at the wider view every so often. Another trick is take a photo and view that as well often shows up issues you don't see straight away.

35 degrees humbug..It's been so hot down here in Mexico that the water evaporated out of the bowl before I could pour in the plaster powder.....!
LOL...not surprised Richard, but at least you don't have the humidity but it's still hot I guess.Still a few weeks of heat left I reckon?

Certainly Joe! Extruded foam makes great rocks and it needs very little plaster to get good results. Problem is down here it is hard to get second hand.ie. offcuts , so it is not cheap to buy new! Expanded foam is ok but is not good for making rocks and makes a lot of mess!

All look's good my friend, try some drywall compound ( drywall mud ) for a longer working time. That's what I use, you can add a bit of water to it...try it...and it takes paint and color washes great, I also mix real dirt with it to. Bob, Longshadowsmodeltrees.com
Thank you Sir! I've got some nice trees that will go in here real well !!! The dry wall mud down here is more expensive than plaster, but I am going to give the casting plaster a go and see how that goes? A lot more practice yet and I'll wait for it to cool down a bit before the next attempt! Off down south for a railfanning trip next week to catch helpers on coal and grain trains...so some good videos on the way .
