Dude! Where'd you go? I'm gonna have to ape your style and start making my own urbanist videos if you don't come back soon
Well I guess he ain't the Armchair Urbanist for nothing...
A'ight never mind, I'll see myself out.
You let me off too easy!
Well, how about just trying to escalate with a counter roast in your content then?
I was hoping he'd say you look and sound like Fix It Felix from the movie Wreck It Ralph - you're so positive and wholesome. The comparison is always in the background of my mind as I watch your videos.
You don't have a dreadlock, so I don't know why he called you Californian liberal.

If they had to make a video on something like dubstep music I swear to god they'll begin the video by covering some guy who did something in 1907.

When the most non-controversial channel possible is the one that gets him upset.
IDK how it happened but I stumbled into this genre of youtube earlier this week and I can't get enough lol. It started with The Urban Doctor's video on the biggest problem with american cities and it just spiraled from there.
I'm from the UK, and at one point in my childhood I spent 9 months in America, attending middle school there. While I was there I lived in a Suburban neighborhood in Georgia. These videos managed to help me understand and express the strong isolation I felt during my stay there and for that I'm grateful.
Also, I've gotta give props to you for your excellent taste in music, Vulfpeck is fucking awesome and props also for including some Louis Cole in this video.
Omg same!! I'm happy I stumbled into this part of UA-cam. It's been really inspirational... And frustrating lol
This genre of UA-cam influenced me to go to a city planning meeting today 😂
Yup, everything started with urban doctor ranting about the "long" city. And now I am here.
@@MrPryzeLurker Huh, I might have to check this guy out. I dipped my toe in the water with City Beautiful but got fully sucked into the deep end with Not Just Bikes.
Man, in all the faults and crippling problems we have in this country, at least we don't have an endless desert of NA-style suburbia and even with debilitating politically-motivated public service and transport cuts, we still have real alternatives to spending an eternity in seas of asphalt with only a car to 'keep us afloat'. Sure the push for car-centricity on both an individual and a state level is getting ridiculous, and the toxic motorist culture remains, but I can confidently live the rest of my life without ever needing to buy one of those death trap 1.5 ton steel and fibreglass prisons that are the curtailing of freedoms to an urbanite.
I love urbanism channels so much, not only because I am very intrigued by it, but also at least for giving me so much hope that I'd rather have the grime and decay we see over impending financial and traffic congestion doom, the catalysts of which are ugly single-family zoned homes needing to overcompensate by lifeless lawns, and to be thankful I can both be a productive, mobile person and also not have to fear about being isolated, needing to drink drive or be living in a food desert because I can walk absolutely bloody anywhere.
Wendover is the most white bread channel imaginable. He’s basically a person that believes techno-hype without getting on his knees with no analysis or his own thoughts on anything. I try not to do that, but what I think still bleeds through.
Him, economics explained, knowledgehub, and others are the “I Fucking Love Science” of 2020s UA-cam
This put into words something I’ve been struggling with. I really got into his videos a while ago, but after watching more of them and seeing his new content, I’ve become disinterested and couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Now I know.

I laughed at the Road Guy Rob one.
The thing is that it is kinda true.
He literally said in one of his videos that he likes cars.
@@MartinJahn So do some other urbanists. They just don't like cars in cities. Rob's videos speak the language of people who won't watch many of the other channels. If they don't watch Not Just Bikes videos, they're not learning and their views won't change. In contrast Rob's video about Phoenix is both sympathetic to car drivers, but also imparts information about some downsides of car-centricity.
@@flinx I do watch the car haters (including Not Just Bikes, who's solution to almost any problem is "Move to the Netherlands, all other countries are doing it wrong anyway!") and I frankly still disagree with their car hatred, not their points about building bike and pedestrian infrastructure, better public transport etc. but I disagree that this has to come at the expense of drivers! So no, I am probably not changing my mind on that, especially since having a car is simply convenient, get a week's worth of groceries home? Use a car, can't carry all that on public transport and putting all that on a bike probably doesn't work (unless you put a trailer on it)!
@@dreamingflurry2729 His video about how he gets groceries is on point, in mixed use neighborhoods you really can go to the grocery store like everyday and its not a hassle.
The fact that I found this entertaining made me painfully aware of how far my transit/urbanism UA-cam rabbit hole had gone. I get the joke/reference for all but one or two of these. fuck.
Your roasts were incredibly accurate to all the channels I follow but I found Not Just Bikes and City Beautiful made me laugh uncontrollably and I agree so much with the Wendover one I was basically that DiCaprio meme pointing at the screen

Subbed, come on the show anytime.
*Do it Alan! I will be on ARC's Livestream when this happens!*
“Welcome to the first roast of this channel; well, not _this_ channel, other channels!”
Okay, so for 100k subs, you have to roast your own channel.
When 1 Million Subs hit: every other channel roasts Alan… (including Wendover?) 😂
As soon as I saw the Vox/Cheddar slide, I thought, "this is about the wrong stock footage in the Gateway project video"
Grand Central footage, pretty shameless;
Talking about the broken swinging Portal Bridge and then showing the Upper Hack lift bridge; that's just neglectful
What's even more cringe worthy is when Vox/Cheddar does a fact about something in another country, fact errors galore.
It would probably be easier to roast the grid video... A giant pile of rubbish.
To be fair Road Guy Rob did take a few looks into non-car transport. It's just a lot of urban channels don't discuss car transport...
Oh they do, they sneer at car use because that is supposedly hip these days (which isn't true, only a tiny minority of people actually would get rid of their car and the convenience it brings!)...I personally am against car hatred, but not against building better public transport, bike infrastructure, pedestrian infrastructure, mixed zoning (which is luckily the norm in Germany, so yes there is usually at least some stores within walking distance) etc. etc. but I am against banning cars or doing all that at the expense of drivers. You can make compromises here, without making driving a chore that people hate, like in the Netherlands, which for me is a car hater country (and it shows, when they do drive, they are pretty bad at it! I see this every year when they clog up the Autobahn because they have to take their camping trailers and drive to their holiday destination!)!
@@dreamingflurry2729 I mean, I'm pretty sure when they actually asked people something like over 50% said they would ditch their car if given the opportunity, which makes sense because those things are basically Financial white elephants, but even if that wasn't the case, cars are objectively worse for the environment then basically every other form of Transport that you mentioned, so if we want the environment to not collapse, some people might have to be uncomfortable taking the bus.
Also you can't both support better infrastructure for other forms of transportation and support car infrastructure. The two are inversely correlated because one form of Transport makes the other worse (ex. You can either give pedestrian priority, which slows down drivers, or driver priority, which puts pedestrians in danger)
Car hatred is absolutely Justified. You can argue that there's still a place for cars, but certainly not as the predominant form of transport. Like there is literally no category in which cars are a better form of Transport except maybe comfort, and even then I would dispute that. They don't hate cars because it's the hip thing to do, it's because there's nothing good about cars
@@pennyforyourthots If you give me a more practical (and convenient!) mode of transportation? Then sure, so would I, but frankly it doesn't exist, nothing beats the comfort and practicality of personal transport! You can't take a week's worth of shopping (groceries!) onto puplic transport and putting all that on a bike is not easy as well :(
I also believe there has to be a solution that gives cyclists, pedestrians and drivers the best possible infrastructure, you don't have to screw over drivers for pedestrians and cyclists! Sure cars aren't the most environmentally friendly thing out there, I grant you that, but that can change - electric cars (the only thing they are worse at is road wear and frankly maybe we should look into different road surfaces, asphalt is really old tech after all (note: No, I am not talking about stuff like "solar roadways", they aren't a good idea either))
@@dreamingflurry2729 its called a train.
It doesn't get stuck in traffic, travels far faster (and safer) than a car, requires less maintenance, and so much more. It can move far more people the same distance while taking up less space and resources, and depending on factors like the type of train, how far they're traveling, etc can be reasonably comfortable. Also, driving isn't comfortable, i have no idea why people think that.
You wouldn't need to worry about bulk groceries because that's a problem CREATED by cars. Because car dependent societies require massive road networks that put massive distances between things like homes, workplaces, etc, its more convenient to make one massive trip where you get everything, where as normally you would buy things from local shops within a block or two as needed, eliminating the need for a way to move a lot of stuff. Instead of going to walmart 5 miles away every week, you just go to your local corner store for most of your groceries.
This car-centric shopping model also has the unintended side effect of killing small business, as only massive warehouse stores like walmart can afford the upkeep and scale required to make such a business functional. Cars are a solution to a problem they create.
There is no traffic solution that give pedestrians/cyclists AND cars the best infrastructure, this is a one or the other scenario. If you want to move a lot of cars very quickly, you need things like highways, which are structures that create hostile environments for pedestrians and cyclists because of things like noise for creating massive spans that they must cross. This is also true to a lesser extent for regular Roads, especially roads where you have high volumes of traffic. The problem is that you have to give one priority, and the obvious solution to that is to give priority to cyclists and pedestrians as there are far more risk than the average driver. When you build things at the scale that you must for cars be efficient, you create hostile environments for cyclists and pedestrians, but when you create an environment that's friendly for pedestrians and cyclist, you create an environment where using a car becomes ineffective and the inefficient option.
As for the environmental damage even if every vehicle on the road became an electric car today, that doesn't mean much. Because the electricity that we use comes from environmentally damaging sources, the amount of energy that cars collectively would use would still make them more environmentally damaging than a train simply because they don't transport people in as significant numbers. Most people drive alone, meaning that for 100 people to move from point A to point B you need about 100 cars. To move that amount of people on a train you only need one or two train cars and you'll have move those people quicker because of the lack of traffic, and far more safely because of the lack of collision zones.
And this isn't even to include other factors like the fact that roads create something called the urban Island heating effect where the black asphalt makes cities hotter as it releases heat throughout the day, the high cost of upkeep which bankrupts cities because roadways are far more expensive to maintain than railroads, the fact that cars have a number of plastic components we are still produced from the same crude oils that make their fuel, the fact that lithium for Lithium-ion batteries is an incredibly rare resource, etc.
Most forms of transportation are more practical and convenient than cars. Most of the problems that you brought up like the grocery shopping problem are problems that are created because of car Centric infrastructure, and he's problems simply don't exist in places where cars aren't the primary form of transportation. I don't think you realize just how much effort has gone into making cars and efficient form of transportation, because unlike a train, they aren't inherently efficient.
While I don't want an outright ban on cars like some people, they should not be a society's primary form of transportation and perhaps reserved for things like local deliveries or for people who live in rural areas. for the majority of humans who live in cities or are trying to travel long distances, trains, buses, airplanes, fairies, streetcars, trolleys, walking, riding a bike, etc are all objectively more efficient, more comfortable, and more affordable modes of transportation when they don't have to be planned around cars, and even when they do have to be planned around cars, are usually still better anyway because cars are just THAT inefficient.
TL;DR: most forms of transportation are more practical and convenient than cars. The only problems that cars excel at solving are the ones that they create by their very existence, and a lot of the problems that exist as a result of cars (urban planning, fossil fuel usage, noise pollution, etc) are often forgotten about when people judge how efficient cars are.
@@dreamingflurry2729 the dutch actually have one of the densest highway networks in the world, they just don't like cars in cities

Six minutes of gently teasing various urbanist channels followed by a minute and a half brutal takedown of Wendover.

I love so much I found you channel NOW, in this disarray of youtube, where you still find unpopular roast of channels like Wendover from 12m ago.
2:21 I wasn't able to pay attention to the rest of the video because I kept laughing at this joke
brilliant roasts! though i woulda mentioned the dumb-as-shit "this subway car design could save the NYC subway" video that cheddar made
Road Guy Rob is focusing on other modes. might be turning a new leaf
Simon Whistler, when you want casually incorrect snippets and words deliberately mispronounced to drive comments.
i have entered the urban planning rabbit hole and thats good cause im in college for it...
"For the love of god, just hire ONE foamer"
Be real careful with what you wish for.
your review of Wendover Productions has been everything i've felt about the channel. I really do want them to do better
Finally, someone else who owns a Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro M RGB!
What happened with Adam Something?
It's two years later and you're still right on about NJB
I'll be dead by the time the next Franklin episode is released...yeah that's pretty accurate
i literally saw a B1M advert on the wall of the London Underground
Statistics lecture you say?
[finds Eco Gecko]
Wendover is about to hit 6 million subs. I wouldn't worry if I was him. At the end of the day, he must be doing something right.
True true
The thing people here don’t like is that he doesn’t give his opinions when that’s what makes his channel so good. His job is not to provide opinions, it’s to give people a basic understanding on interesting and complex logistics. He does that well.
That NJB roast hits harder now
meh i like the wendover videos, i don’t need everything to be personal, i just expect a short peek into an interesting topic from him
I wish to live to the day where Liam fights the guest on a WTYP about Portajohns
I'm looking forward to this
me too lol, quick click club
Didn’t disappoint
Thank you for being one of the key figures who introduced me to donoteat.
I legit dislike The B1M because all he cares about is getting things built. He could be like “this project will force 300,000 people out of their homes, but the new mega-scraper will house 500 50,000 square-meter luxury condos.”
I'm not ashamed to admid I know all of these channels, fucking love me some urban planning
Eco Gecko will always be my favourite channel.
My UA-cam experience have been niched by seasons. Currently I'm in the City Planning UA-cam and, from my little experience, 😂😂😂.
Congrats on 20k love the vids keep up the good work
I am experiencing this weird sensation where I start by agreeing then 'worshipping' with some channels who all seem to be saying the same sort of things and then suddenly I notice one of them roasted the others... respectfully
Nice.
I'm pretty sure wendover's stuff is written by committee by some team.
2:22 LMAOOOO
4:22 BUdget.... I cant.........
Simon Whisler? Wendover? Well yeah they made some videos about cities....
come for the city planing, stay for the vulfpeck
This video is proof Alan is from the Philly area
