How Milestone Comics Reshaped The Comics Industry (Part 1) | Behind The Panel | SYFY WIRE - Розваги
*R.I.P Dwayne McDuffie! He was one of my heroes and very important part of my childhood.*
This video series does a great job remembering the impact of Milestone, with loving commentary from some great people, but there's a huge misconception that in my opinion began in a pervious Milestone mini doc produced on A&E and its being continued here, that Dwayne McDuffie and Static #25 were the reason Milestone stopped publishing comics. That's incredibly incomplete and inaccurate and I know because I was there.
I'm Jason Scott Jones and I was an artist and a staffer at Milestone. I joined Milestone before the first books were on newsstands and starting with Issue #5 of Static I worked on art in Milestone's comics. Later I became Color Editor and besides managing the painters who worked on the books I was a regular painted artist on Icon & Hardware as well as several other issues.
For 25 years I've kept a lot of the details of Milestone to myself or within conversations with other former staffers, but the continuing implication of Dwayne as being the cause of the end would bother me if he were living and definitely bothers me with his passing.
So what was the true reason for Milestone's demise? I'm really curious.
@@thabanentshangase While I don't know, I can feel JSJ about this. The allegedly controversial cover is only slightly more risqué than the classic image of Nightwing and Starfire in the afterglow in Terror of Trigon.
Please share more we all are listening. Milestone was everything to alot of us. It seems like DC isn't using the characters so they don't have to pay. Or scared of using milestone characters out of fear they might blow up like static did and have there hands tied. Which will force them to get all this legal crap over and done with.
What was the reason for its demise
I worked at Milestone before the end, and all I can say is we all have different theories about why Milestone came to an end, and they all have a little bit of the truth to them.
From what I understand the end was not because of Dwayne or that cover, there were many factors and forces that caused Milestone to come to an end.
My approach is similar to what John Lennon said about the Beatles...just go back and read these comics, whether it's one more time or the first time. You won't regret it :-)
Blood Syndicate is a money property that is being slept on.
I bought all of the MILESTONE titles when they came out. I bought them, at first, due to curiosity, then fell in love with ICON and HARDWARE. STATIC was cool, too, but ICON was the one that really stuck with me.
The Light Side Top notch. Super quality. They need to bring it back.
snakeyes2099 ..... Ahhh the good ole days!! I have complete runs of Static, Hardware, Shadow Cabinet, Xombi, Deathwish, and The Long Hot Summer crossovers. I slept on Icon, Blood Syndicate, and Cobalt. I believe this is the path DC should take to get back in the movie game cause it’s a radical departure from what Marvel is doing. Could you imagine seeing Iron Butterfly on the big screen 😍🥰.......they wouldn’t be ready 😂‼️
I lost so many of these over the years. I wish they'd collect them so I can revisit the books.
@@henrymartinez4871 - They did, but they're hard to find. The ICON TPB, vol. 1 with a cover price of $20 is going for $70 on eBay.
Static shock cartoon was one of the most famous here in Brazil
And the u s it was my favorite as a Kid
Most African American children today don't know who Dwayne Mcduffie. It's sad.
I'll like to say thank you Black history month for making this a relevant subject to talk about. And of course to Milestone for giving me positive black heroic images to look up to.
Instablaster.
DC needs to put Milestone comics on their app, they're too good to ignore
They can't
Milestone charges them like crazy.
Which is why they don't use Static
@@sfdko3291 the static TV show is on DC universe and he's featured in Young Justice so I don't see why not
they probably are trying to patch up the relationship cuz, icon is there and blood syndicate as well...i am so happy
Milestone is on comixology now.
Blood syndicate is my favorite superhero group. So much more interesting than any other group to me.
I can't believe it. A video covering the legacy of Milestone. Love it. I wonder what an Icon series would be like. As much as I opposed the idea of Black Lightning crossing over with the other CW shows due to differences in tone and the possible undermining of Black Lightning's characters, I did think that Crisis would have been a great opportunity to introduce some Milestone characters on the show. The most obvious and in demand would have been Static.
Agree
Could be, but Static had been crossing over with Batman and Titans for years at that point. (And of course, Milestone now exists entirely in the DCU thanks to Final Crisis.)
Icon would be better as a movie
Jon Brewer Milestone heroes don’t exist in the current DCU.
Dp Carter he’s still dc it doesn’t matter. If they had balls they give us a icon movie or atleast a damn animated series or even better a animated movie to spark interest. They have nothing to lose
Behind the panel is my favorite show!
I’m kinda surprised Spike Lee never tried to make any of the Milestone characters a movie
just a thought I think there’s problems behind the scenes with rights.
I think the crossover was ESSENTIAL, it was proof positive that the MILESTONE characteristics COULD compare, they DID stack up proper.
The crossover showed that "ours" could be as "cool" and as ICONIC as anyone elses.
By the time Milestone comics came along I had become bored with superhero concepts. However one title from Milestone resonated with me and that was "Xombi" which had more in common with fantasy/sci-fi and horror tropes than just being considered as superhero fare. Besides its main character David Kim , a bio-technological researcher who had become infused with nanites which made it impossible to stay injured for long or even die, the short-lived series gave us a bizarre collection of fantasy/supernatural characters such as The Rabbi (who created and was always accompanied by powerful Golems), the clairvoyant Nun-of-the-Above, Teenage Catholic Schoolgirl (with "God-given" powers of flight, force beams and force fields), evil characters such as Dr. Sugarman, The Lord of Fumes, and psychic assassins/siblings Manuel and Manuela Dexterity(whose lower bodies looked like human hands).
Loved Milestone!!! Donner and Blitzen were two of my favorite characters in Shadow Cabinet. Xombi was a fantastic character too. But the big guns were always Icon, Hardware, and of course Staic Shock I don't understood why they never made a resurgence.
planet7transmission His name is just Static.
@@_Dee2nd
So you guys are on a first name basis? Is it serious or are you two just seeing where it goes? (I'm totally joking, before you get pissed!)
I really wish the DC Universe app would drop the whole Milestone run in a digital format.
I never knew about them until amc did their documentary series about the history of comic books. But Static Shock was one of my favorite shows as a kid
Maaaaaaaaan Blood Syndicate was my JOINT!
Milestone comics that logo definitely brings memories of the whole 90s experience. We had milestone comics and hip-hop.
Mile stone got me more interested in comics because as a kid we saw characters that look like us and the storylines were pretty fun. Blue marvel was amazing as well.
Between image and milestone idk which had the stronger influence on my childhood part of the reason I wanted to become a comic book artist
To this day Hardware is still one of my favorite hero designs. I was lucky enough to remember visiting the Milestone booth at conventions and meeting some of the creators.
OMYGOD! I gotta get my hands on one of those production bibles!!! Those designs should be in an IDW artist edition!
This is by far the best thing I've seen all week I grew up on these comics I've read every comic
The way Christopher Priest presents the development of Static the character at Milestone is consistent with the way Dwayne McDuffie says it happened. McDuffie says he had the idea and pitched it to Marvel but they didn't take the bait so to speak. Then when Milestone was founded and they were coming up with characters he pulled the idea back out and all the founders worked together on it and we got Static.
I'm glad they're recognizing the impact a publisher like Milestone Media had, And their stories still hold up almost three decades later.
I have to co-sign everything Jason just said. I wasn't there till the end but we all know this was more about DC not supporting than anything to do with Dwayne.
Yep, especially in the DC Marketing Department.
I loved Milestone comics. I don't understand why they aren't used more in DC. A Blood Syndicate vs Teen Titans comic would be cool. But, I would personally love to see a ICON vs Blue Marvel series if Marvel/DC happens again. I'm trying to post comments on every new DEATH BATTLE, but to no avail. They did a spider-man (Miles Morales) vs Static, but no love for ICON or Blue Marvel Yet.
snakeyes2099 yea but unfortunately they aren’t utilized in dc comics as much anymore
@@Wise_Son To me that was lackluster becuz they were ultimately depowered so much that they were D-Back up characters at best! 🤨...
If ICON fought Blue Marvel, they'd fight for like 10 minutes and spend the rest of time having an engaged scientific discussion. Somehow, Neil deGrasse Tyson would sneak his way into the convo...
How about a mini-documentary on Valiant & Catalyst Prime Universe?
Thank you all for making this!!!!
Legit "representation" in comics. Proud, very proud, to have interned and worked for this company back in the day. Icon and Blood Syndicate are among the best comics ever created.
How come y guys didn't go to Image??
@@joneshugh That's a great question! Others can correct me if I'm wrong, because this was shared with me by someone who said they had a conversation with Dwayne re ownership, but it's my understanding that as long as certain conditions are met, Milestone's ownership of the characters is not as clear-cut as some us believe. Don't quote me on it, because I've got to talk to some other Milestone folk to confirm, but that would be one theory.
I loved Milestone for a simple reason: Milestone made good comics. I read them when they came out, and even though at that time I was less interested in the political side of things, the realness of so many characters really appealed to me. "America eats it's young"...… Political sure, but how it resonated far overshadowed any amount of cutting edge boundary pushing in my then young mind.
Would love to be able to buy digital copies through something like Comixology.
Amen!
They never shouldve worked with DC. They should've made there own separate publisher.
Shawn Zamir FFXV DC actually helped Milestone get started originally. But I feel you. DC dropped the ball on the properties. Milestone would blow the top off the box office if given the opportunity.
Either that or have gone to image.
@@saturncrush the Milestone characters are miles above the DC characters in quality imo. Could easily be real competition for Marvel.
dominick smith I could see the milestone and image universe fit together
True
I loved these books. They had a color style like nothing I'd ever seen and great artwork.
The story of Milestones development would make a great movie! I really enjoyed learning about the history and backstory. Going to watch part II now!
Agreed! You could basically make movies for all of the Milestone characters and THEN go and make a documentary( or a biopic) about the story of Milestone!
I feel robbed, all I ever knew of was Static.
Gary Threat Dude....all the books were popping. There was a character called Tek9 who has access to pocket dimensions in his jacket......where he pulls out mad guns. It was insane!
Same. I only knew about Static. I didn't find out about Milestone till some years ago. Only character I ever knew about was Static due to the TV show.
Don’t worry brother we’ve all felt robbed I’ve been spending the last couple of months of last year reading milestones stuff.
Just so you can read the comics and spread the word here’s a link website that has all of them viewcomics.net/?
ua-cam.com/video/VDUqqxDBhck/v-deo.html
And that artwork was unparalleled. The Dakotaverse yaw
An Icon movie would be amazing right now!
Icon VS Blue Marvel....hmmmm!!!
I love MILESTONE Comics & Cards as a kid!! My cousin and I were EXTREMELY sad to see it pair with DC and dwindle away. I still have Oblivion as my cover photo on twitter.✊🏾🖤
what an amazing video. Only read a couple issues of Static & Icon cause I grew up with both of them being on shows so i was much more familiar with growing up but this video makes me want to full dive into the world of Milestone, which I will 100 percent be doing. gonna order as many trades as i can of all Milestone work.Thank you for this video
Dwayne MCduffie is a legend
Static was mostly created by Michael Davis and several of the characters in the book were based off of a couple of his family members.
There was just a lot of collaboration and fluidity... The Milestone bible was created by Christopher Priest who is never credited created behind the scenes from day one... Dwayne Mc Duffie I'm sure contributed a lot too... Static was definitely based on Davis ideas... but that's why copyright ownership is so messy in THIS situation.
The initial concept for Static came from Dwayne McDuffie but Michael Davis fleshed everything out with the Static series bible.
DC ur tired of Superman movies?!?!? CAN WE GET AN ICON MOVIE!!!!
Idris Elba should play Icon
Cant wait for part 2
So much love for this Can't wait for the compendium
💥 the characters Zoro and Batman were based on a true Mexican hero called Joaquin Murrieta
Fr?
I remember Icon and Rocket and Static and evening Brickhouse! These were some very intriguing characters and an amazing precursor to the attempt to diversify the DC Universe we know today. Sadly politics always get in the way when money and different ideologies are involved.
We need to have all the Milestone comics in graphic novels.
I'm excited for part 2, I'm a huge Milestone fan! Love SYFY for doing this. My only question is ( maybe two questions ), is this a one and done thing, cause it's black history month, or will this be an ongoing thing cause the comic world is full of Black and other ethnic superheroes.
We can be heroes.
Wish I coulda got ROCKET N ICON. though they did roll both characters into justice league and young Justice respectively. That being said they definitely NEED to do some storylines featuring both
I was just thinking about this two days ago!
RIP to the legend McDuffie! Truly missed.
NOW ITS BACK. WE BACK BABY
Blood Syndicate was the joint! I loved them and Hardware.
i love this documentaries
I hope they go into Shadow Cabinet in part 2.
best milestone title IMO
I remember growing up in the 90s I would go to 10th planet comic shop in Illinois I bought the crossover milestone with DC Comics I really enjoyed the characters that came from Milestone I hope they are independently made or still owned by DC Comics I hope they brought a lot of them back
Oh wow my substitute teacher had all of these comics and let me borrow them loved icon and blood syndicate
After jon schnepp passing away and soon after collider heroes becoming straight trash this is my new favorite show
omg i suddenly love this character
Justin Lofton Which one? Lol
I STILL have my Static #1!!!$
And the whole Worlds Collide event.
Anywhere I could download the Milestone Bible?
Milestone was amazing. DC should be utilizing their characters way more
Agreed! The Milestone characters deserved to be treated so much better!
so stoked to get my MIlestone Comics Compendium in october. 1300+ pages of milestone characters for under 50 bucks!
Outraged I can’t find an omnibus of static shock ANYWHERE!
David kirkman has brought back Static in a live action fan film in the form of Dakota chronicles on UA-cam for free Static was part 1 tonight @ 9 pm Icon and Rocket is going Live go support David Kirkman made Static on 3k budget that rivals studio films
It's just too bad all these characters have pretty much disappeared now. What happened to that Earth-M thing that DC was working on a few years ago? Was it cancelled?
Wow. All these comics that I'll NEVER get to read
Jeremy Nickel Mycomicshop site has a ton of them.
Start digging at your local comic shops, eBay, and like dp carter said, my comic shop is a great website
Now that's rad.
I think DC is missing a huge opportunity to highlight the Dakota verse via movies and tv. Yes Marvel has a head start with Black Panther but DC creating a universe around minorities would put them in a different category.
I love all of what milestone is doing 😁😁😁💯💯💯😍😍😍😍❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
Rest in peace Dwayne McDuffie creator of Virgil Hawkins Static Shock.🕊🙏🏾😥💜
Milestone comic needs come back
9:03 Anyone know who makes that hat?
Could you do a video on Mister terrific?
Paul did Dwayne dirty facts
Hardware??? maybe Icon but Hardware isn't used at all

Shouts to Milestone and glad to see a piece on the legacy but ya'll buggin w/ this music lol
Doesn't scream early 90's to you?
@@Spthomas47 Maybe so but I'll say this. I LOVE YOUR NAME lol. I saw it and was like... GENIUS!!!

Aurel Deutsch Really??
No lie. Another livestream tonight. It’s absolutely BANANAS 🍌
Omnibus anywhere?
How can I buy milestone comics digitally?
They're not on comixology
Is that rapper Pharoahe Monch at 17:03?
I LOVE❤️💕💗The Great Dwayne McDuffie And Static Shock
I LOVE❤️💕💗Milestone Comics, Static Shock And The Great Dwayne McDuffie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had every black comic book ever made to bad I was only a kid I wish some would of put them up for me dang
Back before they turned my boy static into a cornball.
We need the movies think icon movie
It's time to do it again. /-_-/
I WILL ALWAYS EFFFING LOVE❤️💕💗MILESTONE COMICS AND THE GREAT DWAYNE MCDUFFIE
Was that one dude crying the whole time!
Is DC trying to patch up things with Milestone, cuz icon and Blood Syndicate is on DCInfinite? if yes, then i am so happy!!!
So milestone media paved the way for the most notable tokenized heroes of today
Not really no.
Yeah son got 2 #1 copies of static don't start NONE , yaw can finish the rest
Icons live action movie 🎬 should be played by Jonathan Majors since he's out of Marvel.
You know the Image never had a glass ceiling. I kinda feel some of this was a self made.
What
I believe that the Milestone/DC deal was the worst thing for Milestone. DC should either use the characters or let them go.
Here is where I think they went wrong with making black characters they constantly beat you over the head with the racial thing instead of telling a cool superhero story. Stan lees black characters like black panther and luke cage told stories about those characters and not preaching to you about being black. As a black guy myself, I don't need a character to look like me to be able to relate to that character and that's the problem with comics today these people think that characters need to look like the audience so that they can relate to them or entertain them and that's why manga beats American comics today.
Marvel & DC had their own Character Bibles, too. DC had WHO'S WHO and Marvel had their OFFICIAL HANDBOOK.
