One of the reasons why I keep coming back to your videos is that you have this really pleasant aura. You’re that nice friend who really takes the time to explain things in a nice way.
Best golf instructionals by far on the internet. Im coming back from a 10 year pause and youve already improved my swing so much again. Ive watched several others and its just not as easy to follow.
You are by far my favorite golf instructor on UA-cam. You are thorough and relatable, which makes you explain complex concepts in an easy to learn manner. Thanks for all the excellent instruction!
Wow. I’ve been golfing 35 years and used to be a 2 handicap in my prime. I’m currently playing at a 12 (life happens!). I always knew there was a difference between an iron swing and driver swing but not in the way that Clay described it here. I’m a Top Speed Golf subscriber this year and I’ve rebuilt my iron swing using Clay’s system and now my driver is finally working for me. I just got back from the range and was STRIPING the ball 300-310 yards when I’m usually topping out around 275 yards. The 20-minute distance fix drills finally clicked as well. Using Clay’s setup here, I had a MUCH better shoulder turn, more aggressive stance, better angle of attack, better shallowing of the club, and I feel like I’m throwing the axe at the ball for my release. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. So glad I subscribed to Top Speed Golf this year! You da man, Clay!
Just another happy golfer here after watching your vids. Everybody learns differently and therefore different instructors resonate with different people but MAN do your vids resonate with me. Keep up the good work and thank you! Also your driver swing is so incredibly fluid it shocks me to see how far you hit every time. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
Fantastic video! I have struggled with this at times, where driver is great, and cannot hit an iron, and vice versa. This explanation, as said below, was crystal clear. Thank you so much for putting this together.
At a training command in Pensacola Florida, I bought my clubs 2nd hand from a thrift store, watched a lot of Happy Gilmore and let them rip; It was a good way to disconnect from the high stress lifestyle of military aviation. As I started to love the game, I put down the Happy Gilmore DVD and opened up the laptop for a more in-depth and realistic analysis of what a golf swing should be/ look like. 4 years later, I stumble upon a Clay Ballard video, after watching hundreds of other pro's give their advice, I decided to watch a 2nd. It shouldn't take more than 2 videos to realize that Clay Ballard has the gift, common with good leaders in the military, of making the complex digestible. It's not about putting things into Layman's terms, nor is it about using accurate golf terminology/ lingo, that makes up a great teaching video... It's about using the right terms, the right examples and the right technology. For me, Clay Ballard has that, there is something about his videos which are complete and understandable, they make you optimistic about going out to the range/ course and elevating your game to new levels. The time and effort that Clay Ballard and Top Speed Golf put into this program is awesome and they deserve serious kudos for making all of this information free. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Proud TSG member. After I finished figuring out my irons with “the move” and “stable fluid spine,” courses, I was able to translate that to my driver easily! Excited to play now and appreciate the help/content!
You are a quality coach mate, such huge info while kept simple. I am english so I watch Danny maude and rick shiels but if I was in the states I would be at your academy please keep the Intel coming I watched a putting vid u did other day and what a huge difference already..
Thanks Danny, I think we use a Sony RX 10ii or something like that. I can't remember the exact model name. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks for the iron and driver tip! I pull quite a few iron shots to the left. The shots are hit good but pull left! I was thinking I was spinning my hips to fast but I think now I’m leaning to the left to much! I’ll try out your right lean method! Thanks again
I have watched many youtube teachers, taken a few lessons in my life, was a near professional tennis player in my youth so I understand spin and have an ability to replicate most body movements I see, so I really appreciate how you can pack so much amazing information into a small segment. If Nicklaus knew what you know 50 years ago - he would have won 30 majors. I do have one question, given your ability & swing speed (my driver swing speed is 108 and I'm an 8 handicap once a week player) - and that is, from a scoring perspective, is it just insane to try and hit a draw with a driver - is the optimal driver shot a 10 yard fade? Many thanks. Paul
Forward shaft lean has made me much more consistent. Not to mention I'm hitting my pw as far as I was hitting my 8 iron. This video has made me a much better iron player. Thanks a bunch.
Hi Adam, thanks for sharing. Glad to hear that the videos have helped and you've made such an great improvement. Keep up the hard work! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks again for this video. When I am able to execute the "impact glide" my iron shots go another 10 yards and straight. It's a little bit of a weird feeling because my hands are coming up a bit, but for sure the iron head hits the turf just a little bit after contacting the ball. The ball just seems to sail a lot further, straighter and higher. Hitting iron shots consistently is probably my biggest area of issues right now, so that I can score. Working on it.
Hi Jon, you'll want to go get fitted to know for sure but you'll likely want something light with the weight low in the head so you can get the ball in the air easier. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, in one video you said to place the ball in your stance so the driver hits the ball at almost even. This one you say it should be coming up in the swing plane. Which one should I do?
Hi, it's not important to keep the lead arm perfectly straight. Having some bend in there is completely fine. I would recommend spending time practicing the really important things in the golf swing which are the 5 pieces of the Top Speed Golf System. HEre is a great video from the website that is only available to TSG members where Clay talks about this: topspeedgolf.com/vault/golf-distance-test-straight-arm-vs-bent/. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
What about any club path differences on back swing and down swing. i. e. does the iron have to be closer to zero path and driver more plus, from the inside?
Wait how does a toe hit create a hook? Like he said the toe shot twists the driver face to the right and you feel it in the grip. I thought it was the other way around.
Unless it actually gives the ball a rotation to the left since the club head is spinning to the right during ball compression (just a tiny bit, but at those speeds it could make the difference)... Definitely deserves more explanation!
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes, you would use the same lag. You could use the same ball position too but some prefer to play hybrids just a little further up (less than a ball width). Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay I like watching your videos but,......I notice that you tee the ball up with the ball more to the left of your stance and that confuses me. In my experience if I tee the ball up too much to my left side, I most always will hook the ball left unless my clubface is square at contact. I've always lined the ball up with my left heel and I catch the ball on the way up to hit line drives.
Hi Jerry, that's just the camera angle. Teeing the ball with the driver straight down from the lead shoulder is usually a good place. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
It's been a while since I watched any of your videos. It's looks like you have been spending a lot of time in the GYM. How long did it take you to get in such great shape? has it helped your game?
Hi J Bob, thanks for the comment. As far as I know, Clay hasn't been hitting the gym hard or anything like that. I think he would tell you that he is in terrible shape actually even though that would be really good shape for most of us :-). Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I know what im supposed to do with the irons and the driver but I still can't actually hit consistently. I used to slice it terribly but then I fixed it and now im dealing with hooks and heavy draws into the woods. It's so frustrating.
Thanks for your video. I hit it well from 3W to LW. But I cannot hit up on my driver, it is always hit from the top. May I know I hit from the top (deep angle of attack) since i do weight transfer from my right to me left (right handed player) ? Would it be any weight shift difference between iron shot and driver? Thank you.
Hi Packy, there wouldn't be much of a weight shift difference. I would take a look at your compression line. You want to be a couple degrees tilted away for irons and you can be more for driver. Here is a great video from the website where Robin talks about this: topspeedgolf.com/vault/get-10-extra-yards-out-of-your-driver-hit-up-on-the-ball/. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Best of luck! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks Eduardo! The software is from FlightScope. It's displaying the data that the FlightScope X2 Elite launch monitor is picking up. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks! The app is for the FlightScope launch monitor. The monitor tracks the flight of the ball and displays it on the app. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Matthew, you're exactly right. The hands are going a little bit longer and there is more wrist set at the top. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I'm not convinced that hitting up on the ball with the driver is something that should always, or does always happen. I've seen some slowmo's of tour pros where they have swung level or even slightly down at the point of impact, though much flatter that with the irons. And some where they hit up, as well, of course. I notice you were hitting a fade with the driver, ball far forward. What about a draw, with the ball not so far forward? What's the angle of attack then? Not saying you're wrong, just that maybe it's not 100% of the time that the driver is hit on the up. And, for sure, a consistent power fade like you hit in this video would be fantastic to have as a go-to, default tee shot.
I'm with you on this, i started to slow down my swing and just ensure i turn the shoulders... great results. If i want to fade then i swing with the feeling of hitting up on the ball
Hi, you're exactly right. The average driver shot on Tour actually has an angle of attack of one degree down. They do this for control purposes. If you hit down on the ball it gives it more backspin which makes the ball less susceptible to turning it's spin axis and going off line. This isn't conducive to distance and the longest guys on Tour are not doing this most of the time. Also keep in mind that it's very difficult to tell on camera if someone is hitting up or down on the ball with a driver. One minute on a clock is 6 degrees. It would be hard to tell if someone was hitting up on the ball that small amount but hitting up on the ball 6 degrees is a lot. That will likely produce a very low spin and high launching drive. Lastly, it is easier to hit the ball with and in-to-out club path with the ball further back in your stance but that doesn't mean you can do it with the ball further up and still hit up on it. Here is an example of Jimmy Walker who is an excellent driver of the golf ball: blog.trackmangolf.com/jimmy-walkers-trackman-numbers/. He hit up on the ball 4.9 degrees and had an in-to-out club path of 1.4. You just swing more out to the right so that it is still moving out to the right as it gets to the ball further up in your stance. I hope that helps. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks for the response. Will definitely check out the Jimmy Walker link. What you say here and in the video just confirm what I've felt for a long time, that consistency of action (swing) and outcome (shot), i.e. how repeatable, are what are important, not (necessarily) just how the swing is made. There are many ways to get the club head to the ball correctly, I suppose, with some more repeatable than others, maybe. The thing I like about your "system" (though I dislike the use of the word here, even as I understand your reasons for using it), is how it makes one way of getting a repeatable swing and shot clear and accessible to many. What is a big issue, I think, is getting people to reliably repeat with their own body what they see in your (or anyone's) videos, as most people never see themselves swing. Videoing one's own swing is a great way to know what you are doing. It would make great content for your channel, and might even be a product you could sell, analysis of videos of subscribers' swings.
Hi, we actually do sell swing reviews on out website as an additional service for our All Access Members. Also, Clay instructs students on exactly what to look for on video with their swing. Looking at video of the swing is really a requirement to go through the TSG System. What you feel and what is actually happening are often two different things and the camera usually doesn't lie. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Why do I hit better shots on the course than range. I'm a beginner I hit 210yrds with driver I struggle to hit driver at the range I hit every club further on the course. am I unique. I have also been trying to put weight on left side for irons not just wedge. and I hit the ball a lot better.
Do I 'LET' the driver club face open and close during the swing or do I 'MAKE' the clubface open and close during the swing? I find that if I just swing the driver, focusing on solid contact and good swing, without thinking about the target, I slice it. I have to really try not the slice, and then I lose distance.
Hi Glenn, I would let the club face rotate naturally in the backswing and then try to get it to square earlier in the downswing. Clay actually has a great drill for this on the website. Here is the link if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/vault/club-face-rotation-in-golf/. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I went ahead and joined Top Speed Golf to see the video you mentioned and it did answer a question I have always had. I do tend to cup the left wrist and that causes a slice. I always tried to square the club face during the downswing, in a gradual manner, relative to the speed of the swing of course. I swing at about 93 mph. Now I think I it would be easier to close the face early in the downswing as you and Clay mentioned. I am worried this will cause me to come over the top but I will work on it. Thank you for your time. I look forward to more of the Top Speed Golf System Videos.
Clay is a great ball striker, but why not get a good amateur in to show some swings that are good but also have subtle faults, not the obvious bad faults that he mimics.
Hi Ralph, this is pretty common actually. Many people have trouble when they have to hit the ball off the turf vs a tee. The Top Speed Golf System will help you to get into these positions. I would definitely check your Compression Line. Here is the link to the website if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/courses/the-compression-line/. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Peter, it's really impossible to say. I really depends on the person. I did a little research because I was curious on the subject myself and found that the average is 2-3 mph per decade. So, guys in their 20s on average will lose roughly 10 mph in their 60s. This isn't necessarily true for everyone though. I also saw something interesting that most see the biggest dropoff going from their 40s to their 50s. I'm not sure why but that is interesting. Anyway, I hope that helps somewhat. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Clear and consistent explanation on lagging and shallowing, fore shaft lean. Great video that I enjoy.
It's the second video that I see from you.
You make that pretty well.
Your explainations are clear and complete.
Great video.
Thank you.
Great video, that impact glide tip is one that I never heard about. Can’t wait to try it.
Glad it was helpful!

I could never consistently strike my irons until I watched this. Thank you!!
AWEsome video.. lots to think about when going out to the driving range today
Thanks for the iron and driver tip! I pull quite a few iron shots to the left. The shots are hit good but pull left! I was thinking I was spinning my hips to fast but I think now I’m leaning to the left to much! I’ll try out your right lean method! Thanks again

FlightScope X3
What software are you using for the ball flight/ distance? The only thing Ive seen in both videos is the lil strip and your ipad. :)

what is the name of software that you are using on your iPad?

Unless it actually gives the ball a rotation to the left since the club head is spinning to the right during ball compression (just a tiny bit, but at those speeds it could make the difference)... Definitely deserves more explanation!

Do you hit the long irons and hybrids with the same lag and ball position. Thank you for video

I should be so out of shape.
Does clay attempt any professional qualifiers?
I was taught that with irons you want to keep your right arm closer to your body in comparison to a driver. Is there any validity to that teaching?
no

At 6:53 the only real difference looks to be the amount of wrist hinge
Hi Matthew, you're exactly right. The hands are going a little bit longer and there is more wrist set at the top. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I'm not convinced that hitting up on the ball with the driver is something that should always, or does always happen.

What you said is true but the Tour players have tremendous club SPEED and Ball SPEED most everyone else needs to hit "up!"
Could you please avoid from printing the hole Visio at the bottom of the screen, thank you
Thanks for the feedback!
how the app works exactlly?(ipad)
Why do I hit better shots on the course than range. I'm a beginner I hit 210yrds with driver I struggle to hit driver at the range I hit every club further on the course. am I unique. I have also been trying to put weight on left side for irons not just wedge. and I hit the ball a lot better.
Hi James, yeah, I would say that is pretty unique. It's usually the other way around :-) Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
No problem Glenn. Glad I could help. Welcome to the All Access Club! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay is a great ball striker, but why not get a good amateur in to show some swings that are good but also have subtle faults, not the obvious bad faults that he mimics.
Thanks for the feedback.
I hit my irons way better closer off the back foot. This is interesting
Thanks for sharing!
Trackman or GC Quad?
Hi, we are actually using a FlightScope X2 Elite. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I’m OK with the facts when I constantly seem to move into a chicken wing condition after I strike the ball why is that?
I am the complete opposite I hit my driver very well and very consistent, I can’t for the life of me stop chunking my irons
I hope thats your house in the background. Wow would that suck to have someone filming your living room or pool.
Haha...that's not Clay's house. Part of living next to a golf course I guess. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
How much should I expect my driver to be less than in my prime. I used to have a handicap of 7, now 18.
