  • Using your pedal pressure to lift the front wheel up and onto obstacles is a super useful skill to have when you are rolling through super technical terrain on your mountain bike. Today we're going to use our obstacle to practice this exact scenario. Roll slow and get your body to the back of the bike, so the front wheel comes up easily when you apply pressure to the pedals.
We practiced this skill on flat ground earlier in the challenge, so this one is about applying it directly to an obstacle and nailing your timing with the movement.

I like the arm motion during the mouvement 🎉❤

It makes a huge difference, especially on larger obstacles! :)

Yes I did this from your previous tutorials on my 26er dj bike, I did exaggerated my kick and it worked, on my 27.5 I replaced my 34t with a 32t chain ring the lift is not consistent maybe a 30t maybe would work better .

Fun times doing this drill this morning. My last rep was particularly interesting when tire pressure and slippery wood linked up to add some spice.

I try and try to get the front tire up w/o the pedal push, using all the correct technique as far as I can tell. Maybe I'm too old😄🤷‍♂️, or maybe my bike is too weight forward. I don't know. Anyway, the slight pedal push is my go to for now. Awesome lessons! Thanks!

Practice makes progress! 😀 You might try taking a quick video with your phone of your front wheel lift (without the pedal) to see where your body position is when you do it. That could be all you need to figure out what is holding you back. Glad the pedal is working for you - most people struggle with that one!

Did this up a curb and a 12" step. Not my favorite ledge up method, used only when there's not enough momentum to get up without pedaling and not enough space to get in 3/4 pedal stroke. Good to practice it though! Thanks for doing this daily series of challenges!

Thanks for being part of this series! Glad you're practicing all of these, even the ones that aren't as fun. At some point on a ride next year, you might find yourself in a spot where you think "ah man, I'm glad I practiced" with one of the least favorite skills like this. :)

Manuals and related things are much more difficult with fully suspended bike. I don’t ride on trails with it locked so are there any tricks to make progression easier?

Not OP but, Its more difficult because it requires a much more exaggered movement! If possible - I would recomment practicing on a cheap bmx or a smaller bike if you can find one to make sure you have the right idea, and then scale up to a bigger bike. However, if you only have access to your full suspension trail bike, you can still learn! The tip Super Rider gave about being on a slight incline for some of these drills, will REALLY help with a full suspension. Being inclinded can help set your weight up to shift back properly. Once you get the technique, its just scaling up the movement for being on flat or even declines.
