Once you understand this chord structure, your piano playing will never be the same. It's used commonly in both Jazz and Neo Soul, but you'll really hear it used in an absolutely gorgeous way in modern Neo Soul-Inspired tracks that cross genres as well. A really important part of this sound is the dim(maj7) chord, i.e. a diminished triad with a major 7. The structure comes down to being built like a block chord, but with a major 7 instead of a 6. Use this over any melody or chord progression for a modern sound. Enjoy this jazz and Neo Soul piano tutorial with Noah Kellman.

Noah you are really carrying the flag for the next generation of practitioners. It's encouraging that there is a younger cohort of players like yourself who are also tech savvy / social media savvy enough to self-distribute and introduce the music to the Gen Z set. The timelessness of the trio format is becoming more and more apparent with each passing decade, and hopefully an increasing awareness of the greatness and flexibility of the format will encourage both more reverence for the earlier masters as well as further innovation / expansion of the vocabulary. Love how you incorporate classic licks (e.g., Peterson runs) with more modern neo-soul voicings. Keep at it good sir.

Here you have a very fine trio indeed. Noah Kellman has to be amongst the best jazz pianists alive right now. He's not flashy, but is super inventive when soloing. Yet so far as I know, he's not well-known. Current super-stars of jazz piano/keys include the likes of Taylor Eigsti, Eldar Djangirov, Josh Nelson, Cory Henry, Domi, Shai Maestro, Gwylim Simcock, even maybe Jacob Collier. Many of the 'old guard' of contemporary jazz piano have either passed away (John Taylor, Geri Allen) or are no longer able to play (Keith Jarrett) leaving us bereft - except that there is some exceptional talent around right now to fill the void.
I hope Noah is able to get the recognition he deserves. Sure, the field is replete with those in the 'genius' category right now, but Noah Kellman is without question at their level. To be honest, I haven't heard better.

really wish collier would just play jazz piano again and stop fucking around with unnecessary maximalism - he has all the right ideas and they shine through in his choral arrangements and piano stuff most clearly

I just discovered this channel. Not studying jazz piano, but 30 years ago I did dabble. Then this piece came on and you had me transfixed for the entire 9 minutes and 42 seconds. I can't say that about alot of music that I've been checking out to see where music is heading. I'm a bit out of touch. Grew up listening to Chick, and Kenny Barron. Oscar Peterson and I'm seeing a vastly new generation of talent emerging. While your teaching is of a very high quality, your playing is outstanding and would love to see a channel just dedicated to this trio!! The drummer both tasteful and filling the gaps while the bass held the form. The three of you took me on a journey. Noah took us on a journey down the history of jazz piano tradition and went from interesting dialogue between the left and right hand followed by sonic landscapes filled with beautiful colors, harmonic substitutions, and flourishes but always felt the tune was at hand and it was never too heavy. No hard driving left hand comping gives a sense of space and openness. Look forward to listening to all you have recorded and what you haven't recorded.

Lovely. Particularly like hearing the more 'ropey' sound of an upright piano - makes the sound very authentic.

I have been waiting for stuff like this to come up for a long time ! Next level Piano Trio Jazz and even without trying to hartd to be different . Instead being truly inspired ! Is the piano tuned a bit different intenionally or is it just slightly out of tune ?
I am asking , because to me it sounds kind of perfect this way .

Thanks, Robert! It was on its way to being tuned back up to the right pitch, but we weren’t able to get it all the way up in time for the session so we just went for it anyways 😅

Noah, l like to play along with your vids on guitar. It’d be awesome if your piano was tuned to A440. I usually don’t play with vids that aren’t at A440, otherwise l’d be constantly retuning and it’d kill my strings.
    Beautiful playing nevertheless. 👍

Teaching is better than the playing. Overly cerebral, doesn't really swing. Bland chords stick out like a sore thumb. Melody is too vague. Touch lacks conviction or tone. This is archaic music from a different cultural era. Not easy to access. This version is better than an imitation, I'll give it that.

Your words offer no constructive criticism and are therefore worthless. You could have just written "not for me".
