- Yesterday morning, Jackie had a nice hour and a half break sponsored by Shadow, who was happily covering daddy-duty. Jackie returned to the nest and calmly started her sweet twerpling to Shadow to express her desire to be back on the eggs. And Shadow started his usual arguing about it still being his turn…
…but wait…something got Jackie’s attention. She surveyed the area and yelled out a warning...okay, that seemed to do it. She went back to the sweet twerp…
…but, no…something interrupted the moment. She and Shadow both went on alert, yelling at whoever was around setting off their alarms…and the yelling continued, getting louder and louder.
They were both yelling at the top of their voices, emphasizing that they really, really meant what they were saying. Whoever was around had better get out of there immediately…
…but that ‘whoever’ was apparently not listening properly. Jackie suddenly flew off the nest, while Shadow stayed to make sure the eggs were kept safe.
And from cam2, we could see that Jackie quickly doubled back to head to a limb directly underneath the nest…where she flushed out a young eagle intruder!
The intruder was probably a Juvenile hatched in 2023 or a Sub-Adult hatched in 2022, based on its dark plumage with white wingpits. In any case, it was too young to be trying to take over a nest or cause trouble. It was likely just curious and visiting…
…but Jackie let it know in no uncertain terms that this is not the time or place for casual visits. And Shadow yelled support from the nest above. This is an active nest in nesting season and no visitors are permitted for any reason.
After the little kerfuffle, Jackie stayed under the nest for a few more minutes to make sure the intruder did not return, then she flew back up into the nest…
…where Shadow seemed to thank her, and Jackie immediately went back to her sweet twerpling. She moved closer and closer, whispering in his Shadow’s ear and nearly bowling him over in her encouragement for him to let her back onto the eggs.
Maybe as a reward for her quick, tough handling of the situation…or maybe because he was a little afraid of getting crushed under her larger size and weight…Shadow got up without argument and flew off, leaving their precious eggs in the care of his adoring mate. He was also probably anxious to go out onto guard duty to make sure everything stayed safe.
Completely calmly, Jackie climbed into the nest bowl ready to settle onto the eggs. A little bit of aerating the nest by breaking up the soft nest bowl fluff, and then her usual rocking back and forth to push the eggs fully up against her brood patch-the area she and Shadow both have on their chest where they lose feathers during nesting, so they can tuck the eggs right up next to their skin and their 105-degree body heat.
Jackie settled into fluff-duty, tucking the soft materials around herself into the nest bowl and all was well.
Good job, Jackie and Shadow! Maybe we can all ask Jackie to teach us how to shift gears so quickly to take care of a challenging situation and then immediately settle back down into sweet, loving, twerpling calmness.

I've been watching nests for several years now and these two by far are amazing between their interaction with each other it's as though they anticipate what each other are doing never seen anything like it wait until they are feeding three they will be so busy and I'm not the only one with these observations I understand this Nest has gone viral throughout the world

That's right, Shadow, protect your family! Poor, Jackie... she was torn between protecting her babies and helping Shadow defend the nest. I'm glad she let Shadow handle the intruder. And what a sweet reunion!😊
Shadow was actually watching the babies. They were gonna shift change when the intruder came. So Jackie went to deal with the intruder and came back to shift change. I only know this because i read it from the official web page on updates. Either way, they're such great parents/couple.

That was an awesome description written out. I had no idea that eagles' body temps were that high! That seems pretty hot for such a smaller animal (larger bird, but smaller than a human). Nature is amazing!

Love seeing this pair do what they do to protect the eggs and how they look after each other as well. We have a pair on the Eagle River where we live but don’t get to see them do what J&S do.

This was at first a startling moment for Jackie and Shadow when there is an intruder whether it is or isn’t one of theirs or even Jackie’s youngsters but still, there are eggs and this is still an active season and they have to do anything and everything at all coats to protect their nest and eggs too and also to get rid of the Juvie too and make sure that the Juvie leaves and stays away for good too. It is sometimes kinda hard for me to accept and understand even though I do know what J&S are doing and why they do it but, if it is a youngster of theirs then it’s kinda sad that the young can’t visit their mom and dad. That’s all I’m trying to say. But, J&S are absolute awesome Eagles and great parents too. They even work so great as a team too even though sometime like in this video, where one of them isn’t ready to move away but sometimes needs that little nudge. Fierce Mama. Everyone blames her for being assertive about being on the nest, but I get it, especially when she feels threatened. She wants to protect her babies. I feel bad for the juvenile eagle, though. My guess is that the juve is Spirit. 🦅🥚🌲🐟
And a side note -- I like that they don't do more than the situation requires. Like the Bison, they will protect their family but will try for the lesser of assertive action. 🦅🐃🐟🐢

@@carolbratton7305 well according to the experts, anywhere from next Friday into the next week, if I recall correctly. It's a slow process where they start to peck at the shell to get out over a few days. There's lots of info over at the LIVE feed. Click on the link the robot has for updates and history. No. No eggs hatched last year it was a sad 😞 2 months
Last years eggs were not developed at all. I think they realized it part way in. But then they kept on the nest well past when they were supposed to hatch. The Ravens finally came in and when they broke the eggs there were no babies in any stage of development. Hopefully these eggs are viable. I assume they are because Jackie and Shadow are moving them more often. As the babies grow the heat in the eggs goes up. Then the parents have to move them more often for other reasons as well. I don’t remember seeing them move the eggs as often last year.
I was really sad last year when they (J &S ) finally gave up on the eggs and let the Ravens come in and clean up the nest of the eggs....I really hope the outcome is much different this year...stay tuned

Hi there! Jackie is noticeably larger than Shadow, in fact female bald eagles are 25% to 33% larger than the males. Jackie’s beak is also longer and thicker from top to bottom. It’s easier to learn how to tell them apart if you start when they are side by side. This video may help you tell them apart in other ways
