Alan Wells won the 100m in Moscow (7.30). The US boycotted the Olympics, which gave him that chance. Just before that, John Lowe was completing the first ever televised nine-dart finish, which is the perfect game of 501- you score 180, 180, 141. The advert at 10.57 won a stack of awards. It's actually supposed to be the famous Dambusters raid, where Avro Lancaster bombers took a special payload of 'bouncing' bombs and destroyed one of the Ruhr dams, flooding the industrialised Ruhr valley and severely disrupting Germany's munitions manufacturing. The idea of course was that the German sentry starts saving the bouncing bombs like a soccer goalkeeper. The football (soccer) match at 8.40 was an incredible end to the season. Liverpool were top of the English league, and Arsenal were second. Incredibly the fixture scheduling had Arsenal going to Liverpool to play their last game. Going into that match they had the seemingly impossible task of needing to win by two goals to steal the title from their rivals. Right at the death, Michael Thomas scored that goal to take the title for the visitors. I watched that game live, it was remarkable. Just after that, the ski jumper is Eddie the Eagle Edwards. Britain doesn't do ski jumping - before Eddie decided to have a go, only one ski jumper had ever competed for Britain at the Winter Olympics. Eddie wasn't very good - he barely jumped far enough to be able to compete at all - but his spirit of giving it a go won the nation's hearts and he became a huge celebrity. A few years back a film was made about him called Eddie the Eagle, it's well worth a watch. 9.40 is Steve Cram. Britain had a spell of domination in middle-distance running during the 80's with three athletes winning multiple Olympic and World Championship medals. Cram was one, the others were Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe.

I remember in school we had to read a book, or a play (?) The 80s were great for music, zany comedy, and for the arrival of home computers. For me, however, it will always be the 60s which reign supreme - the dawn of the Age of Aquarius, my entry into the mysteries of teendom, and moving school from junior in London to senior in Cape Town. 🎉

Wow, what a stroll down memory lane…I was 15 and still at school in 1980, the 80’s is the decade which had the most impact on me…music, tv, movies, live gigs, world events, and in my personal life it was the decade I left school, started work, fell in love, broke up, met someone else, bought my first house, and got married. I still love the music from that era, the decade holds lots of happy memories.

That's John Lowe in 1984 throwing a 9-dart finish in the quarter-finals of a major UK darts tourney. To make it more relevant to a US viewer, imagine pitching a perfect game, or rolling a 300 in bowling.
He's from a small town about 10 miles away from where I was born. I can still remember seeing this back in the day, it was the first 9-dart ever televised. For this feat he won an insane amount of money, way more than the prize money he got for winning the actual tourney which was 12,000 pounds. For the 9-dart, he won 102,000 pounds ( equivalent to over half a million dollars in todays money ).

The 80s were fab , for me that was the best decade , I was 20 in 87 , I had a fun and well paid job before that in the early 80s school was a laugh . When a person went out to a night club or a restaurant in the evening they dressed smartly . I still have my suits deep in a corner of a wardrobe but would never fit into them now . I remember the cigarette machines in pubs etc and you would only get 16 or 17 cigarettes in the pack instead of 20 . I remember the slow change over from £1 notes to £1 coins most people preferred the notes over the coins . People tuned into Eastenders to see the sadness , unhappiness and violence nobody really wanted to see a happy ending .

Too many references to comment on. "Careful Ange that could've hit me" was a very famous scene from the soap opera EastEnders which is currently on the BBC four nights a week. Eddie the Eagle Edwards was Britain's first and only Winter Olympics ski jumper. The Young Ones was our first taste of the anarchic humour of Rick Mayall and Adrian Edmondson (Bottom and Blackadder)

God, I thought I'd blocked that kid in the green jacket getting blasted to kingdom-come completely out of my mind, but the memories came flooding back the SECOND I saw the blonde hair and that sodding jacket! Completely traumatising - and I swear this was accidentally tagged onto the start of one of my videos (VHS tapes) onto which we'd recorded something like 'Top of the Pops'. Wasn't there another like this with equally awful man-made fibre outfits and bad hair involving a railway line?? On the subject of terrible fashion, I also remember being shown on TV the dangers of shell suits going up in flames - not to mention harrowing yearly ads about firework safety! The 1980s was a dangerous time, when the scars could be both physical and psychological.

The brief clip of the gunmen in balaclavas and grenades going off inside the building was the storming of the Iranian Embassy in Princes Gate, London in May 1980. 6 Arab separatist terrorists had forced their way into the Iranian embassy and taken hostages. A siege of 7 days ensued, during which the terrorists started executing hostages. Soon after the first was killed and his body dumped on the street, the order was given by Mrs Thatcher's Government to the SAS to storm the embassy which they did live on evening television. All the terrorists were killed save one who was captured and one hostage died (at the hands of the terrorists).
The siege took place during the period of the long occupation of the US Embassy in Tehran and captivity of the staff there during the Carter administration.
The Iranian islamist regime showed no gratitude for gaining their embassy back and, instead, demanded that the UK pay for the damage, making it a condition for the restoration of diplomatic relations.

Was born in '81. Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds was the first soundtrack I ever bought (well that my Mum bought for me). I must've been about 5 or 6 but I listened to it every day in between watching Michael Jackson videos. Fraggle Rock is legendary.

Wasn’t Wattle, Wotsit -Watt’s friend - one of Rupert Grint’s younger brothers?
With his hair dyed a more reasonable colour, of course?

The 1980s were depressingly crap. I grew up in them & the nostalgia is ridiculous.

Are you starting with Part 2? I can’t find Part 1 in your videos. Or did you upload them in the wrong order? Or did you react to Part 1 a while ago?

    Where's part 1 ?
If you see a British kid in a school uniform....it's an everyday occurrence over here !
The kids blowing up was an ad for NOT playing in electricity power stations ! VERY EFFECTIVE !

I may be wrong and a bit old-fashioned, but I had the feeling there weren't so many "chavs" around back then. London's changed, the same as B'ham and Manchester...for the worse.

So many memories. My entire youth. You should check out some British public information films from the 70's & 80's. They terrified me but in a good way. A bit like watching a scary movie. To this day I will never fly a kite near an electricity pylon or throw a frisbee into a substation. But I still love Roland Rat and have my original Transformers toys safely packed away with my Atari 2600.
