One of my ancestors was convicted as a Bokkenrijder in Belgian Limburg, he was tortured and confessed to some of the crimes and got a death sentence. He managed to escape the prison in Bree before the death sentence was executed and was hiding until the French took control in the region. His uncle and cousin, who were also convicted, managed to escape to join a foreign army in Groningen, and they also returned home when the French took control of the region. They all got then a new process in Maastricht, where they were convicted for 20 years of prison in Vilvoorde. Only his cousin came back.
