- We took a 20 hour Amtrak train ride from New York City to Chicago! The Lake Shore Limited NYC to Chicago route is....well....very long! But we gave it a try anyway to see how train travel in the USA compares to Europe.

The route of the Lake Shore Limited is the historic water route. Settlement and industrial development began along rivers and canals, such as the Erie Canal. The New York Central connected NYC with Albany and then on to Buffalo and points west. It was also easier and faster to build along that route than go over and thru the Allegheny Mountains as the Pennsylvania RR did. As far as state capitals being in smaller cities, early America was overwhelmingly rural in population and there was a distrust of big cities among country folk. Also travel was more difficult and some states tried to put the capital in more centrally located places.

This is my usual train from Syracuse to Cleveland. It's about 7 hours during night hours, so everyone is asleep. I find it cheap ($90 round trip) and convenient.

Woooow! This is so cool! I love trains but haven't really taken a lot in the U.S. either. Not sure if I could do a 20 hour train though whew. But if more people take it maybe it'll get faster

So the seats in economy didn't have the ability to recline? Did you check out the cafe car at all? I don't think I could've just eaten snacks for 19 hours.
Nope, they didn’t recline at all 😭 the cafe was okay, we just ended up getting yogurt and blueberries 😂
