Great squad of players who could play cracking football. it just makes what occurred on the eve of the world cup all the more tragic. What a pity. This team with Keane could have gone all the way to the final. Without him they were never the same.
Mc Carthy allowed the players play to their best ability; really shone after Charlton's one tactic method, of kicking big and pressing high. We could have won the World Cup in 2002. Qualified in a group containing Portugal AND Holland. Went onto lose on penalties, having missed a penalty in normal time, to the eventual World Cup Winners in the quarters (without Keane) . But Charlton had the World class team, we really should have down better
Brazil, not Spain, were champions in 2002 and we lost them in the round of 16. McCarthy decided not to practice penalties. We played well in the WC, but were in a group with Saudi Arabia, the only team we beat. The performances against Spain, Cameroon and Germany were good, but when were they replicated? Ireland deteoriated rapisdly after the bright lights went out. Without Keane we were back to late-Jack.
Imagine with seamus coleman in this squad and a prime john o'shea. The game against spain was sad the first pen should have been taken by keane. Roy Keane really should have been in the squad too
