@@HenryLNelsonIf you are talking about the owner of this theater then they should sell it to someone that would open this back up and not be so selfish
Niles is also the childhood home of the Dodge Brothers they worked on boat motors as well as home of Tommy James and the shondels once the biggest act in the world
I used to see the train station lit up for the movie they were filming on my bus ride to high school. My mother also dated Tommy James the singer...they worked together at my aunts record store in niles when they were young. Tommy James has been to my grandmother's house wen I was young.....early 80's . Lol I'm Potawatomi. Tommy Shaw from the band Styx and Damn Yankees lived there. As well as Jason Newsted former bass player for Metallica.
That's great to hear! I know many places will change over the years due to many people moving in, but it is nice that there are places like Niles which doesn't change much.
You should have showed marks bar lol. I just saw Styx in concert and tommy Shaw wrote a song about a man from that bar called. To much time on my hands. Tommy lived Near that bar some where.
i grew up in SOUTH bend in the 50.s and 60's, we used to travel to relatives in St. Joe area alot. I always remember a area along the river , just before crossing the bridge . there were a couple of little fishing shacks up off the ground along the shore. I always thought it would be fun to go in them. Does anyone remember them?
I was very lucky with the nice weather as it has been very wet in Michigan lately! Niles along with all towns and cities in Michigan have a lot of great history with them! Thanks for watching!
So there's a tavern by st Mary's church that was the inspiration for Styx too much time on my hands. Tommy James of Tommy James and the Shondells, Tommy Shaw of Styx, and Jason Newsted of Metallica are all formerly of Niles. Also that city of four flags hotel is currently ran as an apartment complex. Next to it is the old ready theater that hopefully will be reopened one day. Moore theatres owns the wonderland cinema down by the river as well as the old ready and some years ago before the flood and before the pandemic the plan was to reopen the ready as a single screen with over 1k seats. It'll be cool if when they do that they decide to show classics in such a classic building.
I know Tommy James and the Shondells recorded Hanky Panky there and then a few months later disbanded. A DJ liked the song so much he played it until it was picked up by many radio stations in the Midwest. Many of the old band mates were not available, so Tommy James ended up finding a bar band in Pennsylvania to back him. The rest is history.
Niles is quite a nice small town! I really like how peaceful it is especially along the St. Joseph River. I would highly recommend checking it out as I know it isn't too far away from you. Thanks for watching!
Looks like the river was up a little bit. Nice little town. Interesting tid bits about the Four Flags hotel. Is it still open? Loved the train depot! Beautiful building.
Michigan has had a lot of rain the past several weeks, so a lot of the rivers are quite high. Thankfully Michigan has been spared of a lot of the flooding which has been occurring in other parts of the country. I can't tell if the hotel is still open. I read online that a part of the building has been converted to apartments. The train depot was really beautiful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing that. It's kind of funny though It makes it seem like Niles is only a town of about a 100 people. It's actually quite a very busy town being so close to South Bend Indiana.
I love that late 19th Century train station. I think that I mentioned this before but I met John Candy when I was 17 years old. It was in St Petersburg Beach Florida and occurred at the end of the day after filming beach scenes for the movie Summer Rental. I watched them do this for hours. When I talked with him it was only the two of us with another member of Paramount Film Studios. He was very friendly, polite, and sincere. I could tell that it was genuine and not fake.
Thank you again for telling me in my older Niles video about visiting the train depot! I am so glad I checked it out this time as the building is really nice. It is cool that you got to meet John Candy and that he was quite a nice guy off camera! "Uncle Buck" is probably my favorite movie of his. It's sad that he has passed. Thanks for watching!
@@scottman895 Uncle Buck Scores 👍👍 With Me As Well. Overall I like most of his film work appearances but there are a select few that I don't care to see again; the number is small. Planes Trains and Automobiles & The Great Outdoors are at the top of my favorites.

I could take people places in Niles that they would never see unless you grew up there. They are some wild places that most people don't know about but would like to see I think that you would. If you would like to see Niles Michigan in a way you have never seen it then look me up on UA-cam, I don't have a regular channel but if you want me to I will make one. The Ready Theater was a big one screen and had a balcony and a very big chandelier that hung way up in the middle of the theater. The theater is still there but it has been closed down for many years and is very haunted. My grandfather retired from the train depot after 33 years of service. I can keep going on and on about Niles Mich. There was so much here that has been torn down, it really is sad to see all that is gone now.
Thank you very much for sharing this information! It is sad to see that some of the history has been torn down over the years, but I'm glad that there is still so much great history there.
I lived in Niles for 14 years, moved to Montana in 2007. I miss Niles, i haven't been able to visit in years so this video has made me miss it more. I used to walk those streets with my girlfriends and just being kids. This is a nice video 🙂
Nice video, Scott! I was taken by this town and it's long, rich history a number of years back. Some notable figures were from Niles: Aaron Montgomery Ward, the Dodge Brothers, Ring Lardner and Tommy James (of the Shondells), to name some. In recent years, Niles has become a foodie paradise with excellent restaurants! Try Jim's Smokin' Cafe, Pizza Transit, Front Street Pizza, and Iron Shoe Distillery. Best chocolate ever comes from Veni's. There's always new places opening up, too.
