Once again, love the lesson, and have been applying everything i learn from this channel as much as i can. I actually am going to try out the whisper yell trick today on a track i'm working on. I like to refresh my memory right before I apply a technique by re watching the videos, i find it helps to catch the subtleties that might not be apparent immediately, but are very important for replicating an exact sound, I think. This is definitely one of my favorite channels.
Thanks Song Bird!
this guy loves mutt as much as me
Hahaha
we have to start a religion based on Mutt Lange's knowledge. Always great content Dr. Bob
Hahaha…thanks!
Loved the song and your production on it
Not only is it Shania Twain-ish, it is very catchy and solid
Should have been a hit!
Thanks Koto!
Thanks Dr.....Love it as usual.. thank you for all the detail in your content!..I, predominantly, use a Pearl 6.5x14 maple free floating snare.. with a couple good mics and the right tuning, that snare gives me an amazing pallet of usable sounds in the studio!
Great snare!
That track is so Mutt, especially the key change of the chorus in relation to the key of the verse
Thanks!
Bobby, been a fan of your work and channel for a while!! So many useful tips... Any chance you could break this track down and explain what you did, how you tuned the vocal, parts etc etc etc.. SO many nuggets I could hear in there, you could make it a multi part series!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
2:48 sounds heavily pitch corrected
It's normal in country music.
it sounds like she sang the notes and crazy compression
Something I realized ( as a drummer, and live sound eng)... dancing shift happens on the beats 2 + 4 (snare hits)... not on kick ( 1+3).. a lot of guys have crazy loud kick drum mixes... they are missing the boat... once I realized this - I found my mixes sounded better with more snare than kick.
I agree but EDM and disco the kick is pretty loud.
@@BobbyHuff ah sorry, I forgot to mention I mix country and rock.
I have one of those Slingerland snares it’s great sounding. Glad someone cares about drum sounds. The snare moves those tunes along.
Congrats on the snare!
Great song Bobby, cool singer and production
Dude I fucking love this. Great channel
Thanks Josh!
Paul has been one of my all time drum heros since the 80's
Great drummer especially with machines..
Such great advice, thank you so much Bobby!!!
Thanks Sam!

Thanks Gilbert
I love this channel!👍
Thanks Bobby!
Thanks for watching!
great video thank you for doing this I always try to match snare sound and toms to key to the song I always listen for it not to clash with each other when mixing
Yes! Ive done a video on this and its a great technique!
@@BobbyHuff thank you for responding
@@robgracia509 my pleasure Rob
Another great video, Bob! Thanks!!
Thanks Jav!
"Now, if you buy the new dr bob´s killer kit you´ll get those 82 snare sounds..."
Hahahaha
Fantastic insights B-Man
Thanks Nat!
thanks again doctor bob :) very informative
Thanks Neo
so now we know what they were after on St. Anger …
Hahaha
That was a tom Bobby lol
I spend a lot of time noticing the background vocals in mutts productions, either Shania or Def Leppard. Thanks for bringing my attention to this. I have a 12 inch of course.
Great vocals for sure..
@@BobbyHuff and thanks for that distortion tip on the vocals and the mumble technique. I just employed both to great affect.
awesome!
Thanks Jimmy!
outstanding content
Thanks Jett!
Amazing!!
When all else fails… duck the vocals on the snare hits via track spacer.
😂😂
Great stuff, Bob! Where did you get the sample of Paul's snare?
I read a long time ago that Mutt auditioned 100 Marshall heads for a Def Leppard record. Sounds like another video!
Wouldn’t surprise me…
awesome timing for this video... Thanks I am trying to mix this exact prob rite now Thanks.... lol
Me too! Was going to give a mix to a client tomorrow but the snare has been clashing with the vocal. I wasn't quite sure and confident as to what to do. This video really gave me clarification. Thanks Bob!
Great!!!
Keep the snare vids comin! You're killin it! Any idea how to get the Tears for Fears snare sound? Lol
Thanks man. Which song in particular?
@@BobbyHuff Everybody or Shout!
Imagine if Mutt knew about finger picking? Could have saved some time recording the individual strings haha! Great content as always, been using your vocal tricks loads of recent
From what I’ve heard he played mostly finger style himself. Not sure why he had them record it that way lol.
He did. If you listen to Man! I Feel Like A Woman! the power chords in the verse are all plucked, using the index and middle fingers. Mutt said if you used the thumb and index then the 5 of the chord is too loud. You can hear Randall Waller talk about it on Jeremy White's channel.
Can someone please tell me what song this is? I love it and wanna download it
82 snare drums doesn't seem like a lot to go through to find the perfect drum sound for an entire album, maybe even a single song
Ive never heard of anyone trying that many before. Have you?
Yes, Bobby - yes! Today's pop music - it can be Country, Contemporary Christian, Metal, - even (to some degree), EDM - the most important 'ingredients' are the vocal and the snare! These are the two elements we humans latch on to as anchors for sonic identity. Great example: "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals. That "paper-bag-pop" snare combined with the vocal makes it 100% rememberable! That's how a mediocre band with a so-so tune find their way into the "classic" category. It's an overlooked art today - finding snares and vocals to overcome the graveyard of music.
Agreed Jon!
I have the 6 1/2 x 14 Yamaha PL Snare myself.
Very good snare
Someone count all those snares.
LOVE all ur snares in the plug in is that something they sell?
Yes!
Great video, very interesting, thanks! What kind of snare’s tuning would you use with a baryton male singer, a more high pitch snare ? Thanks.
It could go low or high....Try different tunings or samples and see what sounds best. In theory a high pitched snare shouldn't sound good against Stings voice but it does...
What do you think about using something like trackspacer to duck a tiny bit of the vocal’s frequencies out of the snare? I’m gonna try that tonight on this project I’m on :) great point about looking for snare sounds that fit with the vocal range
Thanks Matthew Ive never tried one. Let me know how it works out.
This is killer. Your example track that you played can you go over those background vocals? Track is killer.
Thanks Daniel I appreciate it. Just me trying to sound Mutt-ish! Haha
@@BobbyHuff ha nailed it
Bobby, where can I find that song?
How can I get you to mix my stuff? It’s an emergency, Doc.
Hey. Email me at dr.bobmusicsurgery@gmail.com
What's this song called? "She did me a favor"?
Yes. Hasn’t come out yet..
I wish you had chosen a snare that was inside her vocal range to illustrate one that didn't work.
I think I did…did u watch the entire video..
@@BobbyHuff
Yes. Maybe it was too subtle for me.
Well, yes there were 82 available. Now, Roger Nichols took three days of trying snares looking for the right one on Steely Dan’s Two Against Nature. Not finding the right one he called his wife back in Cali and asked her to FedEx the snare from his (Roger’s) kit… the rest is Grammy history.
Imagine wasting all that time and work on Steely Dan.
Wow didn’t know that. I thought he just used WENDLE
I worked with Scott Mabuchi, Scott was studio manager at the time of the Dan sessions.
Booby, let me ask you - if you had any and every choice of mic, for top and bottom - but only ONE snare drum to choose from (deserted island scenarios), what would that snare drum be?
61/2 x14 Ludwig Black Beauty.
So, Dr. B, I have a few EZ Drummer packs, like three I believe as well as MT Power Drum, I feel like all of the snares collide with my vocals (the snare seems to amplify my sibilance issue as well). Is there a way to EQ the snare to get it out of the way or should I seek out a snare sample that works with my vocals and my musical style to begin with?
I kind of know the answer already, but I really don't want to buy any more junk. >.>
Try the kick and snare pack for EZ Drummer that I used in the video. Lots of different snares.
I've heard that Lars Ulrich of Metallica borrowed the snare form Def Leppard used on Pyromania....to be used on Master of Puppets. What's my point?.....Pyromania was a Lange record.
I'm not sure about that....Most of the Pyromania snare is a combination of samples. Maybe they used some of the samples?
@@BobbyHuff Drummer Rick Allen of Def Leppard and Lars Ulrich where both clients of Q-Prime management, where Lars was able to borrow a Ludwig Black Beauty for Master of Puppets, which may have been used on Pyromania. Lars later found his own in a shop in Copenhagen.
@@offtherealm5438 you may be right!
@@BobbyHuff Cool.....interesting concept at any rate. Lars Ulrich is associated with one of the best snare sounds in history (The Black Album) and the WORST!!!! (St. Anger).
@@offtherealm5438 yes he is! I did a video about the black snare and did a sample remake of it that’s pay what u want.
Imagine if Mutt knew about finger picking? Could have saved some time recording the individual strings haha! Great content as always, been using your vocal tricks loads of recent
It's not that simple.
Recording individual single strings on different tracks, gives a different sound than playing all strings together.
He did. If you listen to Man! I Feel Like A Woman! the power chords in the verse are all plucked, using the index and middle fingers. Mutt said if you used the thumb and index then the 5 of the chord is too loud. You can hear Randall Waller talk about it on Jeremy White's channel.
Of course he would have. But he has to work within the confines of what an artist can do. Phil Collen may not have been comfortable with finger picking..so Mutt found another way.
