A little while ago, some of my sharper-eyed viewers saw that my phone number was briefly displayed on screen. Since then, I've received calls from a few of you. And while I love meeting my fans... my mom is starting to worry because she can't get through to me on the phone anymore. So please-for my mom's sake-do me a favor and share your comments on my show page instead of calling? Thanks so much, guys!
11:30 The reason you get an "extra" 13 (carriage return) is because that's what you typed and sent to the modem. AT followed by the enter key (which is 13 hex). So you get echoed back the AT, enter (13), followed by a carriage return (13) linefeed (10). Also if you are going to be ignoring all the echo's, you can just disable echo with AT E0 (enable with AT E1), the only real reason to have echo is to see what you typed if you're running a visual terminal console.
Amazing project, one of my favorites! Some small European companies actually still make phones like that, for that exact purpose. Call it minimalism, call it social networking exile, don't know, but it's pretty cool nonetheless!
Hayes modem commands FTW. Btw, AT = "Attention" i.e. "I want you to do this instruction". Back in the BBS days you used to literally command your modem to talk to a BBS using nothing but a serial console and manually typed AT commands. ATD = Attention, Dial... ATA = attention, answer... ATH = attention, hang up... Etc... Cell modules still use the same commands decades later because it's a good standard. This is why the "Ring" looks like it does as it was designed for an actual human looking at a serial console on their Apple II
Zerkbern I sent him a text message on the number telling him he did not hide it >.< and before you ask no I will not share it. It's clear Ben wants to keep it private.
I was hoping for Part 2 this week, seen this one and I am not stupid or childish enough to take Ben's number and do anything with it. Part 2 please, and please be quick uploading it!!!
Random question, Is the only way to control an arduino with a raspPi is using the raspPi usb port, or is there IO on the rasPi that can be used instead, I'd rather use my usb port for my battery then arduino.
I remember more than a decade ago that I imagined that cell phones would end up being super small but in the end we went from the brick cell phone to the tile cell phone
Late to the party, but I love this project. I own a smartphone only to have a mobile portfolio/small camera. It has no social media apps installed, and well, to be brutally honest, I have no friends, so texts are only from business numbers. The idea of a phone like is something that should come back, sure you can get a flip phone, but a basic BASIC phone is even better. The idea that modern phones detach people is frighteningly true, I see more people recording and taking photos instead of taking things in with what they were born with.
Nice project! Have you ever considered making one on the Banana Pi? I recently acquired one, but had some issues with things such as wifi, and was curious to see what you would do if you got one.
Use a finite state machine to parse the AT commands. It's much easier than parsing it line by line. Specially if you want to handle timeouts. Even if you do it character by character you might end up with a long switch statement but it will be simpler code.
Beat you to it months ago, Ben ;) I built mine using a SIM9000 GSM, a mechanical keyboard (cherry keys) and a few other goodies. I wish I made a segment on it though... :( As always, AMAZING work Ben! Thank you for all that you do.
Hey Ben! Would you mind making a tutorial on how you can send and receive data (ex. Internet, gps, messing, etc.) m using a GSM sim and raspberry pi 3? That would be awesome! Thanks
Here's an instructable for help: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Convert-a-Laptop-LCD-into-an-External-Monit/ 15.6 makes me think it's newer style LVDS, and LED backlit. you're on your own there... but kits are sold to do just this.
Thanks, I have another question. So it needed something of the essence of an LCD converter or something. So I took apart an old LCD tv I own. It was too old for it to connect, but before I put it back together I wanted to go farther. So I took apart the LCD screen. There was those sheets and the black glass thing. At the very bottom there were these glass tubes. I, trying to disassemble it, broke a couple in the process. Can you tell me what these are?
Thank you The Ben Heck Show for the information. I will try it because I've just lost my fulltime job and now only working 18 hours a week. Not enough to feed my 7 kids. So I will try you information while I'm looking for a full time job. Thank you again and all the best to you.
I'm sure you know this but maybe a budding programmer or tinkerer is reading this. At 12:30 run it thru a split() function parsed on the commas. Zero based array index 1 will hold that battery percent value. MyArray[ ]=Split(mystring,",") iBatPerc = cInt(myarray[1])
Better than cellphone - i would like to see the "smart answering machine" for landline phone made by Ben. Debt collectors are really too much annoying with their calls, such device is more important for life.
i love your show's thank you,, keep up the good work... what kind of schooling did you have ? am geting ready to go to college this fall i would love to do what you do,, thank you
Doing Office365/Azure support. We installed Android and WinCE (Windows Phone) in windows virtual machines. I used and iPod to replicate Apple iPhone problems.
People if you've seen Ben's phone number in the last video, keep it to yourself, how would you like it if someone kept posting your number out after you tried to hide it?
Honestly I would just change my phone number if I botched a video showing my number but I guess it's still good to pull the video and reedit the thing because phone numbers get re-used at some point.
Apple smartphones sends 6MB of your data every day, and Android smartphones sends 12MB of your data every day. That's why your phone last 1day instead of 2 days on battery. Processing and sending data consumes battery, and your phone works hard to send everything you do or say near microphone.
I can't believe no one has taken a bunch of old phones taken out some parts and build their own tablets out of old cell phone and tablet parts I was thinking about building some sort of iPad out of a iPhone 6 soldering pieces into a old Android tablet with a nice screen resolution that would match and run iOS on it from the original processor and motherboard from the iPhone inside of the tablet chassis and see if I could basically just build a bigger iPhone 6 basically a iPad I can't believe no one has tried anything like this on UA-cam build a Frankenstein phone or tablet out of old phones
Or... you could buy a Nokia 105... no camera, 70grams, 35 days of battery in stand by and for 20€. Way better option for a backup phone. This project is probably only good if you're interested in HOW cellphones work
Sorry Ben Heckendorm, Someones already done it with just a Rasperry Pi and a Screen and a SoundCard PiPhone - A Raspberry Pi based Smartphone From LMGN
Love the bloopers at the end, well, and the whole show. Yea, I'm a geek has been engineer too lol Love Allison. Show her number in part two lol just kidding .. maybe bwahahaha love you guys! Great team! And glad Felix is getting more screen time, oe, er, um more mentions at least
You... you actually set it on fire...? Please tell me that was an empty shell at least... Please! Lie to me if you must, but at least let me sleep at night!
10 digit numbers? Must suck to remember ones that long. In my country phone numbers are 8 digits, where for local numbers that first 3 are the area code.

FLIP, I WAS GONNA CALL YOU!
Ben, I wanna see you build the ultimate, Frankenstein smart phone; a sort of mix between the best smart phones on the market. That would be amazing.
608 area code, So you're around Madison Wisconsin?
ElPhantasamo Yes, he said that he's around a college named MATC or something
There are MATC branches all over, One is 8 miles from my house.
OMG please tell me that Nintendo shell on fire was an Adobe After effect :P #DontHurtNES
It was after effects,:) barnacules

Madrox42125 OK THX I got it ;)
I was going to say "What the f***?! I already watched this!!". Thank you for clearing that out. :)
Zerkbern I sent him a text message on the number telling him he did not hide it >.< and before you ask no I will not share it. It's clear Ben wants to keep it private.
I really enjoy watching your videos... Can you please tell me what is this program you are using as a terminal? Thanks :-)
Awesome ring tone Ben. I like Golden Earring too!
I was hoping for Part 2 this week, seen this one and I am not stupid or childish enough to take Ben's number and do anything with it. Part 2 please, and please be quick uploading it!!!
What programming language would he use for this project?
Wt software do you use?@13:00?
.Where do you get your supplies?
What programming language does he use ?
What college course did you take to learn how to do this stuff?
Random question, Is the only way to control an arduino with a raspPi is using the raspPi usb port, or is there IO on the rasPi that can be used instead, I'd rather use my usb port for my battery then arduino.
Can't wait to see part two a second time ;)
What program did you use?

Give this man an oscar

Why was this reposted?
Why do you parse the echo? Just do AT E0 on startup!
Where can i find the code for the project
What's that terminal app he was using?
I think it is this one hw-server.com/terminal-terminal-emulation-program-rs-232 - I downloaded and it looked about right
I am pretty sure it is Bray++: terminalbpp
Nice project! Have you ever considered making one on the Banana Pi? I recently acquired one, but had some issues with things such as wifi, and was curious to see what you would do if you got one.
Deja Vu?
Ben, You Are Truly A Master!!
So then it is impossible to make an international call, since it is limited to 10 digits?
Nice lecture, not the solid dry dust. Just the much it needs to get hooked :-)
where can i buy the parts for this ?
www.element14.com
+The Ben Heck Show like always
Intro was freakin hilarious!
I tried to build a phone like that and it sends every picture i take to the white house phone number ... i think that is a bug.
Use a finite state machine to parse the AT commands. It's much easier than parsing it line by line. Specially if you want to handle timeouts. Even if you do it character by character you might end up with a long switch statement but it will be simpler code.
Does any one know where to find the source code and circuit diagram??
Thank You

Can anyone recommend a FONA module for the Verizon Network? We don't have any T-Mobile coverage out here.
You know you usually can turn of echo with an AT command right? ATE0 if i remember correctly..
does anybody know how can i mod a 90's motorola microTAC to use it again? i really want to use one of those bricks these days
Hey Ben, I have an old laptop screen, 15.6 inches. I want to turn it into a monitor for my desktop. Any suggestions?
Here's an instructable for help: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Convert-a-Laptop-LCD-into-an-External-Monit/

Sorta guessed it. I broke all of them.
Anyone capable to make the schematics for this as a single compact pcb?

Can you build a touch screen phone and a I pod touch please
Wait does Ben reside in the 608? La Crosse Area represent!
Madison, if its any different, lol.
Ben still uses a Galaxy Nexus! Awesome!
Sir just a few words : YOU ARE A REAL Mc GYVER.
DO u have a school this stuff is awesome
I love the Nintendo Burning in the Background x3
With this wouldn't you have to pay a payment for using the phone o board
Should try making a cell like a flagship one into an retro computer with some way of GPu expansion and unknown
How dare you set a NES case on fire??? especially as white as that one!!!
I'm sure you know this but maybe a budding programmer or tinkerer is reading this. At 12:30 run it thru a split() function parsed on the commas. Zero based array index 1 will hold that battery percent value.
MyArray[ ]=Split(mystring,",")
iBatPerc = cInt(myarray[1])
Use one of those flashy bling antennas that flash, you know, back like in 2000 everyone wanted them.
Better than cellphone - i would like to see the "smart answering machine" for landline phone made by Ben. Debt collectors are really too much annoying with their calls, such device is more important for life.
Good I am glad he got my message about his phone number
It isn't like his number isn't out there, but the youtube crowd does weird stuff
Antinull I'll say. Who uses a cell phone for talking these days? Mine has an unlimited data plan and about 30 minutes of voice a month ;)
Inb4chan, what are you doing outside of watchat?
DerPinguin44 uh.....
It would be way cooler (a better memory of the good old phones) if you have left that antenna! :)
Ah, good old fashion Hayes commands!
i love your show's thank you,, keep up the good work...
what kind of schooling did you have ? am geting ready to go to college this fall i would love to do what you do,, thank you
Doing Office365/Azure support. We installed Android and WinCE (Windows Phone) in windows virtual machines. I used and iPod to replicate Apple iPhone problems.
Is it strange that for people whose numbers I know, I actually dial their number because it's easier than finding the contact?
why can we not use clip on batteries for our smartphones
Your pre-video acting. :D Its still the only reason why I watch your videos.
would u b paying monthly for that sim card.
Hello, thank you. Have a nice day!
RADAR LOVE ? ring tone ? Ben ? form the golden earings ? nice
If you go through the trouble to build your own cell phone, it HAS to have a pull out antenna!
Why was there a box on fire
I would like to kmow how to make a remote starter
People if you've seen Ben's phone number in the last video, keep it to yourself, how would you like it if someone kept posting your number out after you tried to hide it?
I bet the command to answer the call coming in is ath1 to pick up the line and ath0 to hang up
THE FIRE WAS NOT CG?!?!?!??!
It is so underpowered and incapable... Yet so innovative.
A-am I... a time traveller, s-senpai?!
next time please go into the actual programming.....i would love to see that
But can it call cursed numbers?
Caption is "reuse bluetooth from cell phone" but I didn't find any such info..
Ben, your eyes freaked out at about 4:44
It's about time you upgrade that Galaxy Nexus :)
Little did he know that the galaxy note was a commercially available bomb
Alyson was awesome.
Did anyone actually save his number?
Yup i did
Ave666 What is it?
i dont want to get banned jut pm me
ben could ban me from his channel for sharing his phone number dumbass
Ave666 Wait, really?
Don't feel bad ben I have all my computer passwords taped to the screen.
Honestly I would just change my phone number if I botched a video showing my number but I guess it's still good to pull the video and reedit the thing because phone numbers get re-used at some point.

dude its called diy for a reason
Doing a DIY is much more interesting than buying a professionaly made phone....
Ngl dude, no shit. I see you guys on z80 computer videos too, yeah it's not good, but it's diy for a reason, like shit.
Again this upload i already have seen this.
We need a cell that does not require cell provider
Sorry Ben Heckendorm,

Yeah, what about international calls? 0044 XXXXXXXXX
***** International call are either 00 or + and the 2 digit country code or. So yeah, for example +44 or 0044.
So... No 911 calls???
You should hack an old Motorola RAZR 2005 (I have my mom's old one sitting next to me.)
"can you hear me now" *fart noise*
make cell phone jammer
