Thanks for the reminder! It is easy to forget about broken spokes when you ride a Brompton. The only thing I would like to add is: if you encounter a spoke failure, fix it *asap*, don't wait! Especially if it happens to the rear wheel and you carry a heavy load. A tech taught me the importance of keeping the tires properly inflated. Too less air pressure can cause the wheel go untrue, even if you don't hit any obstacles.
Thank you for this helpful video - simple and instructive. I've not yet broken a spoke, but good to see replacing one is not as complicated as I might have thought. Will add a small screwdriver to my travel toolkit!
Another great video. I’m currently sat in a hotel room in Nepal sorting a broken spoke. If you’re doing this for the first time like me don’t be afraid to really bend the spoke into the right position 😊
@@BromptonTraveler thanks Gianni, spokes looking good touch wood. Nepal is a beautiful place to ride but the roads aren’t great to be honest - lots of rocky sections and landslides where the road is just loose mud! Fun to ride in but grit and mud gets everywhere - took a full day to clean the bikes
As always thanks for a great video. Yes, the wheels are very tough. Had a tumble recently into a quite deep pothole (hidden by flowing water) and the wheels were unscathed. I, however suffered some fractured ribs and scapula; should have heeded the age old advice of never cycling through water.
Thanks Peter. I wish you will have a prompt recovery... It was the same for me after the tumble in Pakistan. I couldn't believe the wheels were still perfectly fine... and the bike too. Weakest point on a Brompton is the cyclist :)
Tension- pluck the spokes like a guitar string to match the same ‘tone’ as the others. Trueing - for lateral trueing, use the brake callipers as indicator fingers.
This is exactly what I’ve done 3 times in the last 4 years, however each of the 3 spoke breakages have been near to the hub flange on the non-drive side of my 2012 single wall rim.
Extremely unlucky or what? I never had a broken spoke on mine...yet. :) Was this riding on rough roads? I do keep the tyres always well inflated and have the bike checked a couple of times a year to make sure it is all in order and wheels are well trued.
Grazie mille per il video. Molto utile (as usual). In effetti sapersi arrangiare è la migliore arte da imparare (vale per tutte le bici). Spero ci siano altri video di questo genere in futuro. Ho iniziato a leggere il tuo libro e lo trovo davvero interessante, ma i disegni ... (bellissimi). Ciao
Grazie a te Pino! Spero il libro ti piaccia fino in fondo.
good video. but you cannot easily insert the rear wheel spokes just like the front wheel because it is crossed design and you have to remove few other spokes to insert a new one. particularly with the outer side spokes. no problem for the front wheel spokes because its a straight design
Thanks for the info Najib! I did have a look as I wasn't aware of this. It looks as if the spokes that cross are lightly touching each other but I would have thought it is still not that different and with a little bending you can install the spoke the same way? Is this wrong? Many thanks.
Just bend the spoke a little to get it in the hole, then bend the spoke back a little towards straight, that worked for 2 of my 3 broken spokes in the last 4 years. The last broken spoke needed no bending it went straight into the hole with no problems at all.
the spokes which are inserted from inner side should be okay when we bending it a bit, but for the spokes which are insert from outer side its very difficult because there is no space at all to angle it with rim hole due to the crossed spokes from the other side. eventhough we bending it. base on my experience when i replace a rim before. anyway i love all your videos cheers from malaysia

Great point! Thanks Paul. I do keep tyres well pumped since I got a decent portable hand pump and that also helps with less punctures for sure ;)

You are welcome! Thanks again. I have never broken one myself so it is a rare event but not too hard to fix if you bring spares with you. Take care.

Thanks! Hope your spoke is now fitted and straight :) would love to visit Nepal one day. Enjoy

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I am going for a long ride in April.
Have a great ride! Destination?

Good advice, thanks!
Thank you for this information, and thank you, too, for "Unfolding Travels," which I have just started to read. :-)
I should be the one to thank you! I hope you will enjoy the read and the drawings too.
Thanks for the great video! Can I check what size the front wheel spokes are? Online search is a little confusing! Thabk you :)
Thanks! Sorry but I dont have that info. A search for spare spokes on www.brompton.com official site should give the answer…

Old Murphy at it again .............
Most relevant in this video... I have only seen spokes breaking on rear wheels and on the drivetrain side!
@@BromptonTraveler I've never broken a spoke in my Brompton wheels.
