So interesting that this is more of an English design rather than French. The length is magnificent... you have to adore those long sight lines throughout. It's just a gorgeous cathedral! It would be amazing to see an Easter service there in its classic form. Thanks so much for this Dara! Fascinating tour!

Thanks so much! I agree that it's fun to learn what makes each of these famous cathedrals so unique and well-known. The drone footage was wonderful, and there is lots more of different parts of Wells next Friday. I was amazed how many cool things there are to see in Wells... much like Norwich I would bet ;-)
Great opening drone footage. A majestic entry you might say. Then at oh wow, 2:19. Mark, I want to thank you for the wonderful information you shared. You are a great guide and very knowledgable on the subject. Something I also loved about the old cathedrals we visited were the worn stone stairways as here at 4:31. The ceilings are just stunning pieces of beauty. So amazingly clever and a work of art. The Bishop's throne is just ( words fail me) stunningly regal. Oh Dara I could go on and on. The wooden carvings, the details everywhere, the windows. This cathedral truly is an architectural wonder. You patience, skill and love for the subject made this a stunning video to watch. Thank you. 💖 🙏 🇳🇱 🙋♀ 🇳🇿

I liked the monk so much that he appears again in next Friday's video which is a tour of the rest of Wells city beyond the cathedral. It was the hottest day EVER recorded in Britain, so not surprising that the monk hiked up his "skirt" a bit! On another topic, I see you just released a new video I missed! I thought you did Saturday uploads! Going to watch now... Cheers! XX Dara
Wells looks a great place from your starting aerial shot but my word that is one fascinating cathedral and so good your very intelligent cousin in law was with you with all that knowledge! 🌺❤️👏😘💃
Probably my favourite cathedral in England. The chapter house and the scissor arches are so unique, and the church as a whole feels very harmonious. The Victorians also thankfully didn't alter it too much like many other English Cathedrals which makes it look genuinely medieval to my eyes!
I have never seen anything like the delightful 'saltire' cross arches before. Your cousin Mark was an excellent guide to the wonders of Wells. I couldn't help having a little laugh over the thought of you encountering the Baby Eating Bishop of Bath and Wells (Ronald Lacey in Blackaddder II)
Yes, the scissor arches are so unique and splendid! As for the baby eating monk, I was not familiar with him, but I had to look him up now... and WOW! He sounds quite horrid, but like an outrageously funny character! LOL
Great tour of Wells Cathedral. Beautifully filmed and presented, you have inspired me to visit this wonderful cathedral for myself now! That Lady Chapel looks amazing!!😊👍🥰✨

Thanks so much! I felt very blessed to have Mark as a tour guide! Next Friday, my video will show other areas in Wells. There really is a lot to see in the city.👍
Very impressive, and great commentary throughout. It did seem oddlly incongruous through, the funny face statues, and the almost comedic sounding wood carvings we heard of, in such a solemn setting :) And now having seen this preview, and as i said in my reply to your question had I been to Wells, I'm definitely now looking forward to my trip more than ever.

I visited Wells Cathedral this year, visiting most of the places inside, in your video, only I wish I had such an informative and interesting guide as you did to take me around!😦a truly beautiful and stunning building in celebration of Faith. Most surprised you did not feature one of the oldest “clocks” inside the Cathedral - the racing knights galloping around on the quarter hours - or the young boy above kicking the bell with his foot on the hour chimes 😊we liked to watch it so much we stayed in and around the Cathedral for another hour to watch it again 😄
Thank you so much for your kind words! I had a bit of footage of the clock, but I didn't think it turned out well, and I didn't have a lot of narration to explain it... so I'm afraid it ended up on the cutting room floor (so to speak). Beautiful cathedral and Mark was fantastic with his knowledge, I certainly learned a lot! I too love cathedrals, churches, basilicas, basically any religious building. Going through them is how I learned about architecture, it's interesting to contrast the mainly stone UK churches where the main colour comes from the stained glass windows to the European churches in mediterranean countries where the colour comes from the frescos on the wall.
Yes, it's sad to know that British cathedrals used to be super colourful but they no longer are. Next week I share video of the parish church in Wells and it has a very lovely and colourful ceiling! Thanks for watching! XX Dara

Wait, was that Christopher Eccleston chillin' in his monk costume??? (P.S. Sorry it took me so long to watch this! I'm catching up on videos and I could seriously watch this one on a loop. Great, great video!! Wells is amazing)
Just an explanation for Ian asking why the angels look like "starfish". In fact, these are not seraphim but "creatures" and there are 4 of them in the bible (the first creature was like a lion, the second was like a bull, the third creature had a human face, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle). And they had 6 wings each: "Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was studded with eyes all the way round as well as inside" (Revelation 4:8). So what looks like starfish are 2 of those 4 creatures with 6 wings. I hope my explanation makes sense 🥴
Thanks, Patz! I've read that story in Revelation many times and never really knew how to imagine what the creatures looked like. It's always interesting to see an artist's interpretations of such things!
Beautiful cathedral,as regards to the face carving you questioned ,could it be Henry || with demons nagging him about killing Thomas O’ Beckett,Only a guess. Nice to see your family with you.xx
Yes, but I did not have good footage of it, so I ended up, not including it in the video. Probably a mistake to leave it out, but it’s a challenge to include everything and do it all justice! 😬 Thanks for watching!
@@MagentaOtterTravels I enjoyed it very much. I've visited Wells Cathedral twice. The first time when I was 5 or 6, I got lost in the grounds in front of the cathedral! I can remember it to this day.
@@jillhobson6128 it’s scary to be the parent in that situation as well! I remember losing Trent at a crowded water park when he was about that age and it was terrifying!
@@Poliss95 no, that’s interesting! I do remember hearing about poppies when I was a little girl, but these days it is definitely more of a British than American thing.
Haha, good point! I look at the carving of the king's head with a monk crawling down over his shoulder and really wonder what on earth prompted some of these sculptures?!
Wells claims to be the smallest English city. Some people debate that, and I will let them ;-) I look forward to visited St David's and seeing the cathedral. I've heard great things! Thanks for watching our tour of Wells!

He was wonderful to lend his expertise to my little video! You know how nice it is to not have to do ALL the research and script writing and VO yourself ;-) haha
@@MagentaOtterTravels Absolutely!
Speaking of BBC documentaries, great job Dara and Mark. Really informative. What a fascinating and beautiful cathedral. Some very nice drone shots from Ian in there too. Beautifully done. Bravo!
Thanks so much, Shane! I was spoilt having Mark as a tour guide. Now I'm trying to edit the video for next Friday of the rest of Wells... relying on my own research and script writing and voiceover... and it is much less fun! haha
@@MagentaOtterTravels I think you'll be fine. I do expect to hear something like "and this quaint little thing is here for... reasons" though. 😂 Make up a bishop or something... St Percy of Thistlecup... say it with authority and we'll all be nodding away saying how fascinating it all is. 😂
Where were the BBC? I was expecting Aled Jones to pop down the staircase…with Harry Secombe..
@@griswald7156 they seemed to be doing filming in the courtyard. I stepped outside to record my outro and was scolded and sent back inside. 😂😂😂
@@ShaneNixonFamily Wells is famous for being the filming location of the movie Hot Fuzz…. Which I have not watched. after publishing this video, one of my long-time subscribers mentioned a Blackadder character referred to as the baby eating Bishop of Bath and Wells. So yes, there are definitely some colourful characters connected with the city, both real and fictional!
I adore this cathedral. It’s in my top 3 of English Cathedral’s 😎
Ooooh, now I need to know your other 2! Mine are Gloucester and Durham so far... but I hope to see York Minster, Lincoln and Canterbury soon!!
Canterbury and Winchester. Both remarkable buildings, with so much beauty and seriously stunning architecture. A top 5 would actually be much harder for me, with 4-5 Cathedral’s potentially taking the other 2 slots.
@@chrisreed3385 it is an absolute delight to go around the country discovering them!💖
I still think Winchester cathedral is smashing the top trump cards stats, lets hope Marks available when you eventually get there 👍
I don't think Mark loves me enough to travel all the way to Winchester, but I do look forward to visiting that cathedral with Ian... and the trusty "best cathedrals" book that Mark gave me!
That was most informative, and also, your hair looks rather elegant.
The hair was a NECESSITY! It was so stinking hot I felt like I had a wool blanket or a fur stole wrapped around my neck! Thanks for saying it looked elegant. I promise it looked much worse from the back, haha!
Thanks for watching the tour... Mark is a wealth of information and I was very glad to have his help with the narration!!! Cheers! XX Dara
Pay a visit to Lichfield cathedral if ever in that area and sample Cannock Chase (AONB)
Sounds like a great place to visit! Cheers! Dara
Wait, was that Christopher Eccleston chillin' in his monk costume??? (P.S. Sorry it took me so long to watch this! I'm catching up on videos and I could seriously watch this one on a loop. Great, great video!! Wells is amazing)
I had no idea who the guy was, but another viewer commented and yes, that is who it is! I checked the cast list and bingo!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Gaaaaaah. You saw The Doctor!!!!! That’s MAD!
@@britainonabudget jealous? 🤣
They didn't ask you guys to be extras in the show?!
Sadly, no! 😔
Thank you for that, Patz, that does make sense.
That is an excellent theory about who that king face is! I like it!
I love Wells cathedral. Did you see the clock, the 2nd oldest working clock in the world, made in 1390?
Yes, but I did not have good footage of it, so I ended up, not including it in the video. Probably a mistake to leave it out, but it’s a challenge to include everything and do it all justice! 😬
Thanks for watching!
@@MagentaOtterTravels I enjoyed it very much.
I've visited Wells Cathedral twice. The first time when I was 5 or 6, I got lost in the grounds in front of the cathedral! I can remember it to this day.
@@jillhobson6128 wow, good memory! I can’t remember anything from when I was five!
@@MagentaOtterTravels It's scary to lose sight of your parents and sister when you're 5, that's why I remember it well.
@@jillhobson6128 it’s scary to be the parent in that situation as well! I remember losing Trent at a crowded water park when he was about that age and it was terrifying!
Armistice day.
Yes, "Veterans Day" here in the US.
@@Poliss95 no, that’s interesting! I do remember hearing about poppies when I was a little girl, but these days it is definitely more of a British than American thing.
I don't know whose heads are poking out of the walls. but they must have been doing some speed to do that. lol
Haha, good point! I look at the carving of the king's head with a monk crawling down over his shoulder and really wonder what on earth prompted some of these sculptures?!

Very sad about the engraving on the tomb.
Naughty taggers in the 1700's!
I've very sad that I didn't get to see a preaching goose!
I’m just glad you didn’t say you were sorry to miss the mooning villager 😂
So Wells must be the smallest English city ? St Davids is the smallest Welsh city..
Wells claims to be the smallest English city. Some people debate that, and I will let them ;-)
I look forward to visited St David's and seeing the cathedral. I've heard great things! Thanks for watching our tour of Wells!
I would imagine St Davids is very small city, perhaps the smallest in the UK. I've spent so much time in Wales it's a bit of an embarrassment that I've never made it to St Davids.
@@ians3586 in 15 minutes one could walk across town easily…10 if you’re a brisk walker..its gorgeous..if you arrive by boat you wont see the cathedral..
@@griswald7156 yes, I watched a documentary that said the cathedral was purposely built in a hollow so that it couldn't be seen by raiders from the sea.
@@ians3586 but on a clear day one can see the Bishops Palace from the Cathedral..

Yes, one of Britain’s best cathedrals plus several other intriguing places around the city that are well worth a visit. I will be showing those other locations in next Friday’s video.😉 Thanks for watching! Cheers! Dara
Hi Dara … not sure why you keep deleting my comments as I’m only trying to be helpful … I have a recommendation for you … The Otter Brewery in Honiton (Devon) …. Well worth a visit … thanks for reading.
I did not delete your comments! UA-cam glitches sometimes and makes comments disappear… VERY FRUSTRATING! I’m sorry that you’ve spent time typing and seen things vanish!
