  • Operation Market Garden, is one of the most famous offensives of WWII. The Allied plan for this operation was to land a large amount of paratroopers in a corridor between Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem in southern Netherlands (Operation Market) and then push towards Arnhem in a ground offensive with the 21st Army Group.
The ultimate goal was to cross the Lower Rhine at Anrhem and push further north, thus going around the strongly fortified German West Wall and pushing into North Germany.
As part of this, the American 101st Airborne Division landed between Eindhoven and Veghel, the American 82nd Airborne Division at Nijmegen and the British 1st Airborne Division, together with Polish paratroopers, landed at Arnhem on September 17th.
In the following days, the Operation Garden, the Allied ground assault, made good progress, however, the Germans ultimately managed to stop the Allied ground attack at Arnhem, where the Allies were unable to establish a bigger bridgehead on the other side of the Lower Rhine at Arnhem, coming under attack of strong German tank and mechanized units. Thus, on September 26th, the Allies decided to abandon their bridgehead on the other side, and therefore ultimatley failing the main goal of the operation.
It mainly failed because the plan was deemed to ambitious, the Allies, especially the British Field Marshal Montgomery considered the German resistance broken, and thus the Allies ignored the known presence of German tank units, specifically the 9th and 10th SS-Tank units, near Arnhem, who were stationed there for re-fitting and were able to inflict heavy casulties on the British paratroopers, who lacked supplies and suitable AT-weapons.
The Allies suffered heavy losses during this Operation,
Despite not reaching its main goal, the Allies still managed to push 97 km into German-held Dutch territory, capturing the cities of Eindhoven and Nimjegen.
Operation Market Garden has been featured in many works of media, most famously the British war movie "A Bridge Too Far" from 1977, directed by Richard Attenborough.
This is footage shown in a German propaganda newsreel from 4th October 1944. It shows the fight against the British 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem, Allied paratroopers parachtuing down, German AA-guns in action, shot down and destroyed glider planes, German infantry advancing, destroyed Allied equipment and British prisoners.

    Remarks:
This is a re-upload. I have uploaded this video before, but this is a much better-quality version, so I have deleted the original one and re-uploaded this version.
00:20 As written in the video description, the British 1st Airborne Division landed at Arnhem, where it defended itself against strong German tank and infantry units for 10 days, suffering heavy casualties and eventually having to retreat over the Lower Rhine at Arnhem.
00:31 Indeed, the operation was a limited success for the Germans, who managed to stop the Allied advance and inflicting heavy casualties on them, especially on the elite Paratroop infantry. The Allies lost 17,800 men (killed, POW and wounded) and 377 gliders, while German losses were only around 8,000.
    00:37 This is a quadruple 20mm AA-Gun Vierlingsflak 38.
00:40 The Allies landed three Airborne Division (American 101st and 82nd, British 1st) and the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, in total 39.620 Paratroopers, making this the largest Parachute assault in history.
00:55 This is not entirely correct; the British 1st Airborne division managed to hold its position and wasn’t completely destroyed. It suffered around 7,473 losses with around 1,816 soldiers being evacuated, and a further 240 later helped back to Allied lines by Dutch resistance fighters.
01:07 This is also not true, the landings itself were largely with only minor losses. The British 1st Airborne Division lost no gliders during landing, the American 82nd Airborne Division only lost two gliders during landing.
    01:24 This gun is a 8,8cm FlaK 36 AA-gun.
01:59 This is an Airspeed AS.51 Horsa glider, the main glider used by the British during WWII. Introduced in 1941, with around 3,700 being produced in WWII.
02:18 This is an Sd. Kfz. 7 artillery tractor with a 2cm FlaK 38 AA-gun.
02:27 This is a British Ordnance QF 17-pounder AT-gun, a 76.2mm gun introduced in 1943 to fight heavier German tanks. This was the last traditional AT-gun used by the British Army, lastly used in the Korean war.
02:33 These are Waco CG-4 gliders, the main American glider during WWII, with around 13,900 manufactured between 1942 and 1945.
03:26 As German tobacco at that time was often of lower quality, sourced from Greece or Turkey, American and British cigarettes, which were still made of good-quality tobacco from the Americans, were considered of high quality and therefore valuable by German soldiers.
04:28 Around 6,000 British and Polish Paratroopers became POW during Operation Market Garden.
04:53 The Operation Berlin was actually the name given to a rescue operation on the afternoon of September 25th, where British and Canadian pioneers crossed the bridge at Arnhem under cover of strong artillery and rescued the remaining British paratrooper and Polish paratroopers, 1976 in total.
04:55 Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969) was an American General and politician, who served as American president from 1953 to 1961. During WWII, he was the supreme commander of all Allied troops in Europe, and therefore also held the supreme command during Operation Market Garden. He was well known amongst German troops and his name often appeared in German propaganda.

I bet the people in charge of making these films were very happy that the Wehrmacht had finally won a clear cut victory. It’s a lot easier to report on an actual victory rather than spinning a defeat into something it’s not

On the 88mm AA, you can see they have wooden boxes around the recuperator [recoil mechanism] atop the barrel to prevent shrapnel from damaging them.

The initial drop was almost uncontested. I think most of that footage was from the attempts to resupply the airborne forces at Arnhem and Nijmegen later. So these would be supply aircraft not troop carriers. But they really had substantial losses both to flak and fighters. The initial para drop had the element of surprise but when they tried to fly in supplies the germans pretty much knew the potential landing zones

Of note, British intel missed the 9th & 10th Waffen SS panzer divisions refitting in the Arnhem area. At full strength each division would have around 17,000 men, but at Arnhem could only muster 5000 combined, yet this was enough to defeat Market Garden.

I think the German Government never officially surrendered, only the military did. If that's true it means the narrator was technically correct when he said German surrender would never happen.
