You forgot that the Queen of the Night threatens to disown Pamina if she doesn’t kill Sarastro (see the lyrics of the Queen’s signature aria), and overall I couldn’t help but notice a strong bias toward the Queen even though she’s honestly just as bad as Sarastro if not worse (not only the disowning bit and passing up a perfectly good opportunity to rescue Pamina at that point, but she was also perfectly willing to sell out Pamina to Monostatos in the end even after she had already caught him ABOUT TO SEXUALLY ASSAULT PAMINA).
Other than that, though, great summary overall and very entertaining presentation, and I love the little pictures you included for the characters as well!

i’m doing an essay on this opera for my friend bc they don’t want to do it but i’ve never seen it. What is taminos background and what are his moral convictions w an example. I’ve tried to find these things everywhere

Another great synopsis Avi. 'Much appreciated. 'Not entirely sure I agree with the charge of sexism though it is certainly clear to see why, by today's standards, it would look that way.
Because attitudes in the 18th century are different to modern-day thinking, the suggestion that Mozart wrote to further a narrative that subjugated women is questionable. It is possible that rather than write to further that discriminatory idea, Mozart was simply writing to acknowledge that individuals need company and that their interests are not best served by living a solitary lifestyle. Admittedly, this may be viewed by some as being indicative of a hetro-normative bias on his part, but again and for the same reasons, a proclivity for anachronism may well hamper an honest, reading of the piece which may well be speaking far more towards the needs of the individual than the specific manner in which they expressed. Back in the 18th century, the prince found his princess, and yes, today that might be expressed very differently however the narrative of unrequited, forlorn love is, I would suggest, a timeless one which Mozart was nodding to.

I completely agree and understand that this was written for a different audience with very different realities and outlooks than what we have today. With being said, my question is how do we as a 21st century audience feel about this topics and maybe we should also create more work that presents the values of our society today. Have women rulers without it being a taboo, treating men and women equally regardless of their race, and giving people the right punishment for their actions.
I always look at opera and literature with a questioning gaze as to why it's held up so long and why we believe it needs to be part of the modern cannon. It's my opinion as someone who works in the arts and has build my career and education around performing works of art that may not hold my values but still send a clear message to it's viewers.

@@VivsGreen Asking how we as a society in the 21st century feel about the mores of a bygone era is really interesting (in an unashamedly geeky, nerdy kind of way). In a strange unintended ironic twist, it may well add to why so many continue to engage with the pieces so favourably because as the mores of society change, so do the challenges they pose to us. For example, I enjoy Wagner’s music, in particular his rousing “Flight of the Valkyries” very much indeed. However, the anti-Semitic views expressed in his writing about the Jewish influence on German culture lie in direct contrast to my fundamental views on equality and respect for all, irrespective of religion.
I agree we should create work that reflects the values of our society today but I imagine that is almost inevitable and unavoidable so long as the music continues to be written. However, purely to play devil’s advocate, it could be asked who gets to decide just what constitutes the values of society? It would seem that right now, just as in yesteryear, finding agreement might be more difficult than at first imagined, with fighting and conflict in many places around the globe.
Themes such as treachery, jealousy, infidelity, justice, retribution, and other aspects of the human condition seem to have been well catered for in opera. That is why I suspect Mozart was writing in far more general terms and not in a sexist way which of course is how it may at first appear. For example, do we know if Sarastro is aware of the demands placed on Pamina by Monostatos? Let’s face it, with it not being safe for a young woman to be alone, it’s a bit of a Hobson’s choice having to choose between a witch of a mother or a lecherous oddity like Monostatos. In this regard, it seems oldies, in general, are not portrayed favourably.
I am new to opera and that is why I really do love your vids. I have a lot to learn. Last year I saw Die Fledermaus and Swan Lake and had hoped to see more this year but circumstances changed. My own background, as far as the arts are concerned, lies in literary criticism but I am certainly no specialist. I would suggest the reason opera has remained so popular is, first and foremost, the magic of music which the power of speaking directly to the soul of the individual, possibly more than any other art form. Secondly, it has the ability to address all those aforementioned aspects of the human condition which are most challenging to us. That is why I am not sure if I enjoy Wagner or if I merely appreciate what he has written.

The opera is not just sexist, it's so pro-secret-societies that scares me.
The temple of the sun represents masonry and this opera is just a very expensive (and beautiful, yes) way to say "hey, we're good guys"
Well, I'm not falling for it.
Queen of the night was good, she just trying to save her daughter from masonry and Zarastro is evil AF.
I will die on this hill if I must
