@Nubnewb Epson is the worst of the lot. First they make the printheads non-user replaceable (it means the bin when they fail or clog), then they spent MILLIONS in R&D to develop nasty non-refillable cartridges with chips designed to lock out competitors and cause trouble, then because printheads are built-in they devised the wonderful vacuum "cleaning" system that sucks out the gold-priced ink and WASTES it in a pad. When the printer *thinks* that the pad is full, it jams up telling you it needs servicing. It means binning the printer if you cannot source the Adjustment Program and DIY. This is EPSON! Not so fun fact: certain printer would intentionally add a tiny bit of magenta or cyan ink into every black print; they say it makes it "more black" though really it just drain your ink faster.
You have to mix it. There is no black ink in standard printers. The dark color is called key (thats why it called CMYK) and is just a dark grey. Otherwise it wouldnt be possible to mix it with the other colors to create darker shades
@@Manu-Official interestingly, my third party cannon black ink cartridge that was 3 years old worked perfectly, where as the original could not after the same time. Both of them were sealed and unused prior.
I've owned and used the same laser printer for fourteen years. I've put exactly three toner cartridges in it in that time and spent $60 each time. Each one prints about 2500 +/- pages, laser printing is much cheaper in the end - less than 3 cents a page.
I had to buy a printer before my first spring semester at college and all the damn top-rated Laser Printers were on backorder. I got stuck having to buy inkjet printer.
@imacmadman . . . Say! You saved me the time to put those same words as what you wrote about laser printers. I had the same results myself. From what I recall, the color laser printer I got was around $300. The toner carts lasted for years, as opposed to ink carts that can dry out in months. New inkt printers have inkttanks (ecotank) that can print over 2000 with one tank (right now I printed about 1000 pages and consumed about 40% of the tanks black ink and 12% of the other collors. 1 refill for 1 color costs 13€ I think. I bought a head-cleaning set and it did not work and we had WASTED our $440 on a cheap low-end $120 printer and had plenty of bottles of leftover ink to show for it !! Also realize that there is a head-cleaning nappy in the bottom of ALL Epson printers and so NEVER unplug an Epson printer (we never unplugged ours) as it wakes up every few days to clean its heads. Once that head-cleaning nappy is filled with ink in a year or two ALL Epson printers are programmed to DIE! There is NO escape from this type of Epson printer death!
Finding out that cartridges today have less ink than they did back in the day confirms my suspicions on how printer ink seemingly doesn't last long these days. I now know why.
Many things have gone this way. I recall when nicad cordless drills hit the market. I had a Ryobi 7.2v that would work all day long. Just before lithium batteries made their debute, the quality of new nicads was a mere joke on capacity of their earliest versions. Manufacturers are always looking for a way to squeeze another few cents out of the consumer, without the consumer noticing. When was the last time you bought a half gallon tub of ice cream? Take a look at the volume of how much is really in there.

My printer has been out of ink for years now. I'm glad almost everything is online nowadays-- I haven't had to print something out to turn it in for a long time. Hopefully the transition to online documents will help get rid of the inflated ink prices since less and less people are needing ink.
Not to mention that companies like VistaPrint and other such online print shops, use commercial grade printers which may be tens of thousands of dollars... but they are so much more efficient than a consumer level printer it's sickening.

What’s to stop someone from buying a brand new $70 printer, using the ink up then scraping it for parts and buying another one. If it costs $120 to make then wouldn’t you be able to get back a significant quantity of the money you spent to buy the printer
Also recently Cannon was sued for completely disabling all functions of their printers when you run out of ink in one or more cartridges. So if your printer has a scanner that might possibly have faxing capabilities you cannot use those functions if you run out of ink even though those functions don’t even require ink to function.
I purchased a cartridge resetter for £30 for my brother fax printer had the printer 3 years old now never bought new cartridges just use the resetter once on each drill a hole in the cartridge to fill and away you go
*How to profit:* Step 1: Order an printer. Step 2: Take out the ink and sell it for 5$ less than original price Step 3: Sell The printer Step 4: Repeat untill you're a millionaire.
Many new printers come with new printer cartridges and toners only available in new printers and contain very small amounts that last a short time - forcing you to buy new ones soon after purchase.
I am appalled that they can remotely deactivate a cartridge of ink before I've finished using the entire well of ink! That means that they aren't even letting me use all the ink that I bought in the first place! As consumers, we assume the company is ethically allowing us full access to a product that we fully own! I'd argue that these companies are being unethical by remotely deactivating the cartridge (regardless of a subscription or any claims on the number of pages the ink can cover).
More and more "products" are moving to a you-don't-actually-own-it model. Most things these days are subscription based rather than purchased outright, especially things like software. Even physical items "reserve rights."
@@furr63 That is why you buy third party ink cartridges with hacked / recycled firmware chips that cost 1/3 the price of official branded ink. Or buy the printers with ink tanks instead of using cartridges.
That only happens if you're "subscribed" to their ink service, which is a scam, just like inkjet printers are. Just buy a laser printer and be done with it. If you don't print very often, the toner won't dry out so you can stop worrying about having to replace the toner if you print something in 8 months.
My teacher once told me the computer industry is filled with people with top notch genuises. Unfortunately they use their genius to scam and rip people off of their hard earned money.
As a software engineer I would like nothing more than making the end product as affordable as possible sadly the ceo working above me needs to make money for shareholders
So that's why they call a place, where costumers get quoted 1000$ to replace the whole mainboard in their laptop, because it has a single bad chip, the genius bar.
@Mr. Gang Banger warning long post! I disagree, without their million dollar ideas being brought to reality by the real innovators, the "people above you" would be nobody. It's just that they're in the position they're in because they're either lucky or know how to say/do the right things to make sales. But most inventors don't care about starting a business and wasting time on marketing, they just want to do their job solving new problems while someone else does the job of running the business. So in the end everyone gets what they want, until the corporations become too successful that they start going corrupt from the inside.
I had a coworker who told me she'd throw away her printers every year and buy a new one because it was cheaper than buying the ink. This is ridiculous and needs to be changed
This is what I used to do as well. It annoyed me because it was so stupid, but it was significantly cheaper. Then printer companies switched to "starter" cartridges in new printers that meant you effectively had to buy a printer _and_ ink upfront, so it was no longer worth it.
Which is an incredibly dumb thing to do now as most printers are now sold with “setup” or “starter” cartridges that are deliberately hobbled to have minimal ink so you need to buy cartridges really quickly. Far better to buy a more expensive printer with lower cost consumables but most consumers don’t do the research.
Some of us don't go by the Trump / Xi (Chinese) docturine of read a title then you know all, no need to read too much into it. Simple minds = Easier to control. Others, however, prefer to know the reasoning why. I'm glad slow minds such as yourself aren't making these videos.
Another trick they use is to add color ink into black and white printing, so you may be printing a bunch of text and then suddenly "you are out of cyan" - they say that the printer doesn't have "true" black ink and that it is more of a grey so that it can make darker shades of other colors for color printing, but in reality it just means that the non-black ink is used up way faster, because you need more of it to mix into a color to make it darker than if you used black ink and you need more of it along with some color ink to create black too. If they used real black ink, you could use less of the ink more spread out and it'd produce exactly the same colors.
they say they need to do this because adding cyan to black toner creates a "truer black" color, but then if that's the case, they should have added more cyan to the black toner.
@@StreakyBaconMan Really? Thank goodness mine is from 2015 before they even thought about the ink subscription nonsense. I will die the day that thing dies on me and I can't find another one like it. 😐
Rich black (aka process black) is a thing. You can't pre-mix cyan onto the black cartridge because then if you wanted to print a dark shade containing the other primaries (magenta and yellow, which are used to make red, green, blue, orange, etc) the hue would shift, so your dark yellows would be green, magentas/reds violet or purple, etc. But for printing a document you most likely don't care if it's a dark grey or brown.

At this point in my life where I haven't even started working for my own living and everything is already expensive just makes me think how inflation will be in 5 -10 years ... like living is so freaking expensive I don't even need to know the reason why they are expensive cuz it all comes down to greed
I used to work for Lexmark, and when I questioned the high prices of ink and toner, which ounce by ounce are more expensive than Chanel #5, they said that that was the business model. Lexmark was remanufacturing its own cartridges and the production cost was 1/5 of sale price. Basically that is highway robbery. I was an insider and I know the costs.
I switched to an Epson Eco Tank for my printing business and I went and bought another for daily use with standard ink. I love love love how they handle ink refills. Basically, the ink sits in a reservoir and you just fill it with a bottle. The printer can't tell if it's Epson ink or third-party ink and it's great!
When I bought my laptop it came with a free HP printer. When school started I had a lot of things to print out. The ink ran out about 1 month and 1/2 to 2 month in. I thought it was because I printed a few pictures of my friend for his birthday so I bought another set of cartridge and that I would only print for school related things (texts, documents, etc.) BUT it still ran out incredibly quick. Thinking it was just too much of an inconvenience, I decided to buy another printer. I bought an Epson printer for 8,000 pesos (155.95 USD). 2 years later and I'm still using the free ink. I only bought 1 refill bottle (black) but there's still some ink left in the bottle. The bottle costs about 250-270 pesos (4.87-5.26 USD). To this day, I only used the first bar/level of my free ink which is crazy because it's nearing it's third year since I bought it with the printer.
Really? Wow that's actually super useful information since I've been thinking about getting a printer as soon as I have the money saved up, that printer with such lasting ink is seriously something to consider in the long run! To think I was looking at only the cheap ones, like the hp you mentioned when it would actually end up costing more. It's something I never knew about before since I've never owned a printer before but it makes alot of sense to pay more up front and save money down the road than the other way around!
I used to refill cartridges when I worked at Walgreens. It involved pushing needles into the cartridges and filling them up. Was significantly cheaper than buying new ones. Printer companies constantly change cartridge types to make older ones outdated. They also started putting ceramic plugs into the cartridges so you couldn’t refill them. I also think the company that made the refilling machine was sued on a constant basis so eventually they just gave up and we stopped providing the services after they stop making refills.
I bought a refill kit on Amazon and been using it for about a year. It cost $20. I’ve printed lots of colorful pictures on glossy paper and they look great. Just make sure you NEVER install the provided software because they track your ink usage.
Knowing this makes me feel even more satisfaction in having found a trusted salesman downtown that refills those cartridges for a waaaay more reasonable price
4:40 "When customers purchase HP, they are reducing plastic waste" - how? It's rather the opposite. Having to regularly replace cartridges creates plastic waste.
They meant that the old cartridge is supposed to be returned to HP. New carts that have run out of ink can be refilled, then resold, several times before the head wears out.
Yeah, i know. The biggest difference between OEM ink and ebay ink refills is that OEM ink doesnt fade, and the blacks are darker and they don't smear when it gets wet. OEM's have a monopoly bc they have a proprietary formula, and they spent alot of money on r&d, so thats one reason why it cost an arm and a leg. Thats why I use cheap ebay ink refill kits. I bought mines a couple years ago for $12 and still have alot of ink left. Ofc I don''t really care if it fades or smears, i can alway reprint it. If you have the right printer, you can even refill the carts at Costco while you shop.
People cant have plastic bags or straws, but companies can wrap 3ml of ink in 10 pounds of plastic and sell that over and over to the same people lol. And why is all the food still packaged in plastic? Are we really that dumb?
Plastic is easy for food storage. You can't really get a good alternative for cling wrap. Or phone cases, or toys, or containers, without paying a much larger sum of money. That's the issue with trying to go plastic-free. Some plastic things are replaceable, some aren't so easily done. And some can't afford it, unless there's cheaper alternatives, but currently those are rare.
I remember the pain caused after finishing a painstaking paper the night before school, trying to print it and getting an error message saying "low cyan" and being unable to print.
@@arvindynr That's not easy to refill. I tried to refill my same ink cartridge 3 times, but it all failed, one time from top, two times from different sides. I think the cartridge only has a small space for ink(ink cartridge came with printer), and use separated space to block ink refilling.

If a printer manufacturer makes ink cheaper then they would have to increase the cost of the printer. And if people perceive the printer as "too expensive" they won't even purchase it, let alone the ink. Imagine looking at every brand of a simple, small printer for ~$99 and then the same looking printer of another brand for $300? Without knowing the cost of the consumable (ink), most would go for the cheaper brands. Unless most or all manufacturers change, one won't take the risk. I'm not against your comment because ink prices are ridiculous. Imagine buying a computer for $300 but paying $500 for the mouse and keyboard. Same story.
They use the "cheap printer, expensive ink" strategy because consumers are dumb and look at product price without checking cost of operation. Same reason why people get "free" phones with a carrier deal (basically a credit) Brother printers cost 3x+ as much as a "typical" printer but you can get 50ml ink set for 10$. Also ink refill takes couple seconds. Open refill tank, pour ink in, close.
Epson don't do that. Their EcoTank printers uses no electronics for ink status at all. You have to manually look at the tanks to see when you need refill. They are all shown in front of the printers. Impossible to trick anyone. On top of it, they are 50 times cheaper to print photo with.
I actually rate my printer and the ink, we have had the printer for about a year or so, the printing is really high quality, and because instead of the normal 3 ml cartridges, it uses a bottle of ink, yes it’s expensive, but we have not brought one more ink bottle in one year, and believe me, we print a lot (by the way, the liquid isn’t even halfway there)

I bought a Brother laser printer in 2012 and it still is going strong, after 12 years. No more dried up ink cartridges. For a person that doesn't need to print anything often, a laser is more than sufficient in quality of print and the toner doesn't dry up, it's dry powder. I used to curse ink jets and bubble jets because when I did need to print after a couple months, the cartridges little jet holes would be plugged up and dried out. Couldn't print even though I might have only used them once or twice. If you print every day or at least twice a week, inkjets are okay. But I I only need to print things every month or two or even less.

10 - 15 years ago my office used to print tons of papers just for filing, which will end up in the shredder in a few years anyway. Now it's all digital everywhere, we mostly use the printer to scan documents now.
I finally had enough and went for a colour laser with nonchipped toners (Brother) that you can refill over and over again. Each colour toner is 4,000 pages and black 6,500 pages which you can refill for £50-£70. The only problem is that Brother have started adding chips to their latest lasers but they are still easy and cheap to refill. My colour laser MFP is chipless and it's just a case of turning a gear when resetting the cartridge after refilling it to reset the toner counter.
It has been forever since I used my all-in-one printer to print. Whenever someone told me to print a document, I'd always plead to stay using the digital copies instead.

Sounds about right
can't deny, was a sexy reply from HP
So be fair, that is HP's business model throughout their entire manufacturing and services divisions.
Yes, but at least with HP you can disable that "option" in the settings, so it only uses the black ink when printing in black and white.
@@presidentkiller Fun fact about HP - they've started to make it so their new printer/scanner combos require ink to scan.

I bought a Brother printer which has a refillable casing which doesn’t use cartridges. Just buy the refills and top them up. Quite a thoughtful company amidst all these greed.
My mom used to just throw away her printer every time the ink ran out because the ink was $65 but the printer with ink and tax, was $50.
The cartridges supplied with the inkjet printer are low capacity. The XL cartridges are worth the cost, and they can be refilled from cheap kits.
Then sell the printer at normal price at a car boot sale
Don't throw the old printer, just buy a new printer, remove the ink, and throw the new one. You don't want to install everything all over again.
It's as if the customers will use it to print their money back.
Thanks! Now i can be the guy with annoying facts that no one ask for
Thats me everywhere
That this is even legal is mind-blowing. Forcibly disabling an ink cartridge when it is half full should be a crime.
All I know that ink isnt coming off his hands easily
Amar K that’s driving me crazyyy
"Very simple: Greed." This Grandpa is ahead of his time.
I found that the Epson Eco Tank is a lot more cheaper and you get more ink for your money 💰
AND you can use third party ink for even cheaper 👍
It's pretty expensive off the bat though. I'm seeing it go for $300. BUT, Shaq's on the home page so that's a no brainer buy
Andrew George Can’t we just print stuff in the library????
But sadly it doesn't do double sided ;(
@@Lucky8s Sure the upfront costs are higher, but if you print regularly it is worth it, otherwise you are better of going to a copyshop.
can do like i do, buy color ink, get a shot thingy, drill small hole on top, put ink in, then take small ear wax plug stuff an plug hole, been doing this for years.
One of my dad's buddies was telling a story once about how he worked tech support in the 90s. His job was to sell computers and tech-related equipment. So he glimpsed at one of the company's reports and it said that the cost to manufacture a cartridge for one of the printers was about 33 cents, and it was marked up to $20.
solution: just sell nonbullshity printers for like $1000 and ink that isn’t overpriced and lie about being empty
Epson does this with their EcoTank printers epson.com/ecotank-ink-tank-printers#etwproducts
I bought an epson printer didnt connect it to wifi and i print with fake ink no problem
Just dont buy new printers the older ones are the best
that is not a solution
I just use this ancient Ricoh printer. Things able to print nearly a dozen stacks of paper on a single toner bottle that costs around a hundred bucks
Known this for years >_>
I'm glad there's finally a thorough/detailed video that highlights many key points :)
Every time a cartridge runs out of ink; I drill a small hole on the top and inject ink into it.
" _When someone purchase HP, they are reducing plastic waste....._ "
Yeah, the unusable cartridges that had become trash is of course _not a plastic waste_ *_sigh_*
If you contact HP and ask they will send you postage paid mailers so you can send your "empty" cartridges back to them.

I just realised, that's the reason books have lesser pictures in them...
They don't use inkjet printer but Rather ink tank printer which dirt cheap to operate
But I I only need to print things every month or two or even less.
i love my epson eco tank, it’s been 6 months since i bought it with inks included and the tanks are like 80% full
We got an imposter over here. I'm on to you Epson, I won't fall for your cheap tricks!
We have Epson L310 since 2017 I believe. Still working pretty well. Printed about 2000 album sized photos. Plus some 1500 other pages. Didn't run out of ink yet because we get extra set for free as a gift from e-shop. Even after long period of not using it head isn't clogged. Can't said that about our previous printer Canon Pixma something...
I bet you were paid to say that.
You have nothing on your channel.

GREED! Yea that is so precise and straight to the point.
I like this kind of man. X-D
This is why I do all my printing on the school printers, cheaper and the final product is a better quality then a home printer.
10 - 15 years ago my office used to print tons of papers just for filing, which will end up in the shredder in a few years anyway. Now it's all digital everywhere, we mostly use the printer to scan documents now.
Printers are the worst modern technology that I have ever used. I always run into problems with them.
Especially the option to make their laptops METAL.
Me too. If not printing color, buy an HP 1102, and you are done. 5 years, ZERO problems. Its laser.
I bought a Canon laser printer like 4-5 years ago. Not one single problem yet.
