For me its 49.99 for the kit itself, then 17.99 for shipping, they include "estimated taxes" of 17.00 so thats 84.98. However, unless they actually ship this with DDP paperwork (which I assume they dont since they mention my country being an issue on their website), the transport company is forced by law to collect 25% VAT on top of that, which includes all goods and services listed on the receipt including the shipping cost AND the "tax" they already charged me for, bringing the total up to 106,3 USD.
They do say on their website to contact their support when this happens and they'll work something out. To be fair they have a good track record of fixing issues for their customers, but it does require you to trust them and you can see how fast this problem compounds if I want this screwdriver kit and a backpack for instance

LTT always seems to make stuff with very minor but very thoughtful differences. like when i got their screwdriver i just bought one mostly for support. i had a racheting screwdriver for work before anyway. but i lost that screwdriver one day so i started using the ltt driver instead. the differences were small but honestly i wouldn't go back anymore. the SUPER low backdraft of the ltt driver makes a very small difference, but it's a difference you really notice. i feel like this precision driver set is the same. small thoughtful changes, adding the storage for 3 bits, just enough bits for almost every computer hardware related project, making the top case magnetic, i mean the odds of a screw falling out of ifixit's case was small, but with magnets on the case it just makes it that much nicer. cause the screws dont roll around when you go to grab them now. just very small changes that provide tangible, but small, improvements to the usage. is it really worth the premium price? i would say mostly no. like i said the improvements are small, but nice. but i dont think they're substantial enough to bridge the price gap, at least not for the ratcheting screw driver. for the precision set maybe cause it's not all that much more expensive.
as for my personal opinion, going to lttstore is better for me as opposed to amazon. i just hate amazon period.

I don't have experience with the LTT screwdriver, but I would notice that backdraft immediately. so many times trying to start a screw, I have to twist my arm or reach over the handle to pinch the shaft, usually the first thing, because it's an awkward space. by the time there's even resistance to rotate counterclockwise without backing the screw out, it's halfway in. Still though, I really like the grip on my current driver, and I'm feeling the pinch more every couple months, as groceries eat up decidedly more of my discretionary money...

      Good news, my friend.
If you don't buy junk multi-bit screwdrivers at a dollar store then you'll get one of two standard sizes. Every bit from every screwdriver in each of those two sizes are compatible, regardless of branding.

    • @your_average_cultured_dude
      @your_average_cultured_dude 4 дні тому +5

@@pwnmeisterage this is wrong, because there is no measuring standard. some companies take the measurement as the bit itself, some take it as the inside of the screwdriver, which results in bits either being slightly loose inside other screwdrivers, or some bits being too tight in some screwdrivers. the long flexible adapter on the ifixit kit does seem like a good idea on paper until you actually need to use it. the bits don't stay in place and the tip is too thick so I've probably gotten like 2 legitimate uses out of it. sometimes you need a long thin screwdriver, which neither of these can replace.

But you want to know what the best part is that was briefly touched on at 9:41? Even if you're a Canadian buyer, you're still paying in USD on LTTStore...to get something from a Canadian firm. Same with the most recent LTX, even though it was held in Vancouver, if you wanted to go, you had to cough up USD despite the event taking place on Canadian soil. And if you're the CRA or a provincial tax authority, I'm sure you're pleased that they're collecting tax...but then handing it over in USD as well. Better hope the forex rates don't swing wildly by the time it's remitted.

@@sevenofzachThere's something to be said for hand feel and precision machining but at a certain point diminishing returns becomes a reality. You're paying more for marketing and aesthetics than quality. It's not computer repair puts excessive amounts of wear and tear on a screwdriver and these are clearly meant for low torque applications. You're not working on appliances and cars with them.
The simple reason why LTT's set is somewhat overpriced is because it offers nothing to justify its $10 premium over iFixit's Mako set. Other than branding I guess. Also, it's not like $20 sets are half as good; I've personally seen some that offer comparable levels of quality.
It's also worth noting that buying high end stuff that rarely gets used is wasteful. Not that I'd put either of these sets in the same class as a Wiha or KTC.

You forgot to mention the blades on the LTT bits are longer so they can get into deeper holes and you can buy the LTT precision screwdriver independently and it's designed to fit inside the Ifixit set so you can use the Ifixit bits and case, and in my opinion, the LTT one is more ergonomic and for an additional fee you can get different tops for the LTT precision screwdriver that may fit your hand better. This is all coming from someone who owns both the Mako driver which is included in the pro tech tool kit and the Manta driver set and also someone who lives in Europe which makes LTT stuff more expensive by quite a bit, but still, I own all three of Linus's screwdrivers and they are all superb quality, and I would buy them again if I ever needed to

Pretty much every micro driver set I have (a couple of Ifixits a brand I don’t recall and a small set that’s basically just Philips (actually the Japanese version) flat and square bits I bought in Japan for too much money. They seem made of some Tony Stark alloy and just do *not* round over or get mashed up. I’d like that same quality in a micro-bit set.

I'm surprised you didn't do a comparison which bits are included, so I tried to do it myself... and now I'm less surprised because it gave me a headache:
    1) actually it's not 64 bits vs 60, because Linus doesn't consider 1/4" to 4mm adapter a bit, so it's 64 vs 61 bits. (or 63 vs 60)
    2) it's not like both of them have the same bits + one has 3 more, that would be to easy:
Both of them have 53 of the same bits:
    Phillips - 000, 00, 0, 1, 2
    Flathead - 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4 mm
    TORX - T2, T3, T4, T5
    TORX Security - TR6, TR7, TR8, TR9, TR10, TR15, TR20, TR25
    Pentalobe - P2, P5, P6
    Tri-point - Y000, Y00, Y0, Y1
    Nut Driver - 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5
    Square (aka Robertson) - 1, 2
    Gamebit - 3.8, 4.5 mm
    Spanner - 6, 8
    Triangle - 2, 3 mm
    iPhone Standoff Bit
    SIM Eject Bit
    Magnetic Pickup Bit
1/4" to 4 mm Driver Adapter
    Hex - 0.7, 0.9, 1.3, 1.5, 2, 2.5 mm
    iFixit also has:
    JIS - J000, J00, J0, J1
    Oval Drive
one more Nut Driver - 5.5mm
    5 more Hex bits - 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5mm
on the other hand LTT kit has:
    one more Philips - 0000
    Pozidrive - 1, 2
one more Square (aka Robertson) - 0
    one more Spanner - 4
3 more Hex bits BUT the security type (with a hole in the middle) - 3, 3.5, 4
I hope it helps someone make a decision because that hyperfixation was exhausting

i wouldn't say that he copied their homework or innovated hugely. the case magnets are a nice touch, but overall the selling point was the build quality. and a feature that he seemed pretty proud of that you didn't really touch on that i think may be due to your own use cases. the length of the bits was specifically shaped so that you could get into tight spaces with some electronics that have deeper holes with a screw at the bottom. older laptops and handheld consoles are pretty guilty of this at times.

I like the ltt design because of the longer narrower bit reach. Both use the same size bits so it's pretty standard sizing for flexibility. May be a difference in the bit production and stuff like heat treatment but you can't really do anything with that. I feel like the design of it like the longer bits and magnetic lid and all. It may not be "worth it" from a strictly value standpoint but the things that vary are very thoughtful. Internal bit storage is really nice too. I like the ergonomics more too
Just all the stuff combined with production size could make a big difference in the cost between them. I think it's got a lot of nice to have stuff and nice if you already plan to get other stuff from them. Plus can use paypal or whatever to have that stuff quick anyway too.
I'm a tool junkie so I am always looking at other options that may be smaller changes among them to just find that perfect one.
