This was very helpful. I’m looking for a key light to use with umbrella or softbox - why do most videographers recommend a daylight vs bi-color for the key?
Daylight is recommended typically because of two reasons: 1. You get the most output from the light (brighter than bi-color typically) 2. Most people are shooting in scenarios where their keylight is set for daylight (5600K) and therefore hardly use bi-color for a keylight. I personally gravitate to a daylight only key-light since it's just simpler (in completely controlled scenarios), but I do use bi-color from time to time when I need to get the light matched with whatever natural light I might be competing with.
Very helpful, well explained, and nice examples of showing differences when fill light off and on and use of deflector; lighting is the one area for video I have not invested in yet, so doing lots of research
I have heard people say the Godox SL-60W has a loud fan. I can't hear it in your vid. I'm guessing you have no issues with the fan noise? Brilliant vid by the way. You definitely deserve more subscribers!!! :)
I heard that too before I bought it and it was my only one concern, but I've had no complaints or issues with it! :) I'm glad you liked the video! And thank you, I hope to get more subscribers soon!
I'm using the Neewer hexadecagon diffuser dome here. If you want to check out all the gear I use and recommend you can go to kit.co/fellowfilmmaker and you'll see everything there! Personally I would only recommend the Neewer dome if you don't plan to travel with the light but instead keep it setup.
Wonderful work, thank you for this video and all the efforts in the rest. I just got SL-100W (daylight) and couple of 500LEDc bi-color + soft boxes. Yes I agree about the fan noise and lower output compared to others as everyone is mentioning but you get what pay for. I needed some comforting notes telling me that I picked good kit. Have you checked out replacing the fan projects and any issues with flickering? appreicated.
I've thought about replacing the fans, but I decided against it - but from what I can see from videos online it's not too bad. And I haven't noticed any issues with flickering so far.
Thankyou for your video!!! very honest and important. Also, I'm happy to follow a girl that is making equipment videos review for filmmakers!!! You are awesome!!!! thanks again.
Depends on the light :) Right now I use the UL150 from Godox and have it around 23% power. For the SL60 when I used it as a keylight I believe it was very close to 100% power because I had a big soft-box
When shooting kids videos, how would that sort of setup work? I film my twin daughters a lot for the grand parents and cousins, which are in another country to me. I love the whole camera aspect, I have reflectors and a godox sl60w but dont think "moody" lighting seems proper for 2 year olds .. never tried thou and could easily be wrong on that.. Any advice on that ?
I think it would work fine with kids! If you don't want such a moody look you could just use another light to light up the room a bit or if there's natural light that would help.
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks ! I think thats something not really spoken about .. A lot of peeps cover lighting but you dont find too many that cover scenario lighting as such.. But will Definitely play around with that !

Love your channel! But could you turn on automatic subtitles? UA-cam will just generate something which is quite good and super helpful for non natives!
I do have it on. A few of the old videos, like this one, apparently did not get it (might not have been an option back then) I'm sorry. I'm working on seeing if I can get them to update. to auto for the older ones.
Thank you, I'm glad I can explain it well for you and others :) I always wonder if what I say makes sense. I can definitely look into that for a future video!
Hi .... I am thinking about getting the Godox SL-60W but cant imagine having a dome taking up so much space. Can I use the SL-60W with say a quick-collapsible white umbrella?
Yes. :) I haven't done it yet myself, but you can do it. It'll have alot more spill around the room is all. If you don't want as big of a dome you can look at an octagonal softbox, they tend to be a bit smaller but do the exact same thing.
@@FellowFilmmaker oh if u could help me out again ... i am pretty undecided between sl-60w or a led flat panel. I appreciate nice lighting but trying to find a blend between practicality and quality of light.
Thank you very much Your videos are awesome Could you please share with us how much power you need to light up your video using SL60w and the camera settings at a certain distance? Because I need to know if I can shoot product videos at 60 FPS without raising my iso. I know every setup is different but it will help me decide
It is possible to use the SL60 with 60fps but you'll need a fairly decent ISO (depends on the camera too, of course). If I recall I could shoot decently exposed footage at 60fps on my 6dmkii with an iso of around 400-800 (which is decent) with the SL60w at full power. Could be off a bit since it's been a long time since I used the SL60 as a key at 60fps
I really enjoy your video - so straight forward with all the info you need delivered so uncomplicated and leave me in a perfect position to make a qualified decision myself. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I'm just staring up on video and it is a jungle to figure out how much and where to spend money on the "right" equipment - your videos help tremendously! Last thoughts - would you ever consider to use the Godox SL-60 (with a smaller diffuser or barndoors) as a hair/backlight and a VL 150 as key (if you not on total low budget), also what are you thoughts on the Boling P1 or Godox M1 are they worth it compare to the AL M9? Very last thing - SO SO relieving to see a female UA-camr in this area with such great knowledge - KUDOS to you!!
I'm happy to hear the content is so helpful! :D Yes, I would us the SL50 as back or rim or hair light with VL150 as key. In fact I've done it many times, just with a UL150 as my keylight. I'm not really sure about the other lights since I havenn't specifically used them. But I love the Aputure MC because the app is what makes it amazing and stand out from the rest. I do have a whole video comparing a bunch of small rgb lights if that would help. :)
Hi If I could kindly ask you a question. I am filming a 1st Birthday party in a medium sized function room with around 25 people. Scratching my head try to decide what lighting to purchase. 2pcs Godox SL60W 5600K LED Video light Lamp + 60cm Softbox + 2.8M Light Stand Could I get away with 1 light. It’s a small budget shoot. I thought of hiring, but thought if I buy a light it will serve future small event video shoots. Will be using a Canon 80D. Wondering if the above will do a great job. Thank you.
If you can roll with a slightly larger budget I think you could future proof better by buying the Godox UL150 or VL150 and then maybe use a lantern on it. I just feel the Sl60 wouldnt be bright enough for what you're hoping for., especially when you add a diffusion of some sort. I'd go with the UL150, as it's fanless and thus silent as well as bright enough (even when paired with a diffusion of sorts). I recommend a lantern diffusion because it will give you even bounce around the room and be easier to light more with it. Now if you can't afford it then you could work with the Godox SL60's if you needed to, but would probably do better just bouncing them off the ceiling or walls. It's really up to you and your budget.
Hey! thanks for the video! very helpful :) I have a question for you: I make videos to a person sitting on the desk (doctor) at a distance of maximum 2m from the video camera. Behind there is a library and I am currently using a ringlight, as well as the light from the ceiling of the room. The problem is that on the right side I have windows so if there is a cloudy day the scene will light up more or less continuously. What can I do? In any case, I was definitely thinking of changing my ringlight to the godox SL 60W.. maybe put the godox on the left of the person framed and a reflective panel on the right (from the side of the windows) what do you think? Thank you so much!!
Glad you found the video helpful! As the situation you have is heard to "see" without actually seeing it I can only offer some suggestions. I'd say covering the window if you can will be helpful to have better control of the room for lighting. I would say getting a good keylight, like the godox, is a good idea. Then using a reflector can certainly help add some definition from the background. I'd keep the ring light and even use it as a hair/rim light if possible. Hope that helps
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you so much! Hello! So do you suggest to put a light (softbox) on the opposite side of the window? and with the ceiling light on the ceiling what to do.. I mean.. it's best to keep it on or off? it would be right above the speaker's desk. Being the bookshop behind very close I did not think to put lights behind. What do you think about that? thanks
I would put the softboxed light opposite the window if you plan on using the window as a light. If not it won't matter. The ceiling lights I would turn off.
I've never heard it called a hair light, just rim light, LOL. Seems biased against bald people. To me a backlight is when the light is actually behind the subject.

Your videos have been very educative. What would you recommend a distance between the subject and the key lights?
Typically 3-4 feet is a good distance to get soft falloff with the light

I'm actually curious, which Dracast LED light exactly are you using? Thanks!
You know, I really have no idea. I was borrowing them for awhile from a friend, so I have no clue. I wouldnt exactly recommend them for video work
Hi. What is the size of the parabolic that you used with Godox sl60w?
The dome I've used on it is 48". I certainly don't recommend that size for the SL60w. A smaller one like 36" and under would be better.
GVM 80S-2 is a great alternative as well.
