Thank you for making this video. It is always wonderful to hear what parents think and want. Getting feedback from parents is certainly just as important as giving them what they need to help their child.
Hi, Suzanne! Thanks so much for visiting my channel. That's such a great point; we need to be mindful of what our parents truly want! Are you enjoying teaching?
I believe in choosing only a few slides to extend conversations and stretch their learning too. But I also believe teachers need to personalize the positive student responses as well. Thanks for the heads up about the « how » to practice and being able to ask parents to tell me what they want directly.
Hi, Nicolette! That's a great point; we only have so much time with each student! I'm happy that you stopped by my channel today. Thanks for taking the time to share your input! 😃
This was very interesting. I have read many suggestions that state not to give the child homework or suggestions to the parent how to help. The reasoning that I have read is that the parents are not English-savvy so they will not be able to help efficiently. Hearing Melody was a complete turn around from that other information. I would like to hear how best to help my children, too! Thank you to you and Melody for changing my way of thinking!
Hi there, Dorthi! Thanks for your awesome comment! My thinking is that it's better to provide that information and not have them need it, than not to provide it at all! Our feedback is translated for the parents so as long as we are writing in fairly simple sentence structures, it shouldn't be hard for them to understand. I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the video!! If I were to interview a parent again, what would you like to hear? 😁
That was very helpful. I’ve heard suggestions of feedback ideas but to hear it from a parent is so much more real and it confirms what I believe as a parent and as a teacher! Parents want help!!
Hi, Linda! Thanks for taking the time to leave this kind comment! Yes, I agree that it's more valuable coming straight from a parent. It makes sense that they would like some help! Have a great day, Linda!
Thank you for your information! I love that you say that the feedback is a conversation. I have been teaching for a LONG time, the parent, student, teacher triangle/relationship is so important! We have envisioned a preferred future for these students and need everyone on board! Thanks for the specific ways to leave feedback. Love it!

Hi Kristina Thanks for this awesome video. I think at VIP KID you can either work on auto pilot or really take it a step further and try to make a difference. I appreciate your efforts to help us do the latter. Keep up the great work and thanks for helping all of us teachers to be our best!
My pleasure! Thank you for all of your efforts. I am just thinking about it more. How do we know if all the parents are as eager as Melody? Maybe some kids (especially the pre-teens) don't want more homework. How can we know if they will find it helpful or a turn off? I have just been mulling that one over in my mind for the past 24 hours. Also, can't asking for feedback also invite negative feedback which could affect our stats and is for all the parents to see?
Hi, Miriam! Those are interesting ideas to consider! In my opinion, parents can choose either to use it or leave it when we assign homework. You can even ask parents in the feedback if they would like additional assignments! Anytime we write feedback, there's a possibility for negative feedback. Do whatever you feel is right! 😁

In my parent feedback I've added reasons WHY I focus on a particular skill or concept with a student. But I hadn't considered adding more about HOW to practice outside of class. In fact I tend not to write much about practicing outside of class at all. My wheels are turning!
Hi, Lisa! Ooh, it's always a great idea to add the "why" as well! Parents like to know the payoff of practicing a certain skill. I bet that for many parents, it's hard for them to determine what's actually important. Great thinking! I'm curious to hear what happens when you start offering some ideas to practice!! :D
Teacher Tina, thank you for the insightful tips. I love your background!! Question: what homework would you give a student who has issues with pronunciation? He adds syllables into words and completely changes the word at times. For instance "class" sounds like "chris" and "read" sounds like "writ." Plus it happens every other slide, and he doesn't seem to hear the difference in the way I'm saying it. Thanks in advance!
Hi, Cynthia! Great question. It sounds like perhaps your student isn't able to get feedback on his pronunciation without being in a class. One idea that you can implement in a future class is at the end of the lesson, go back to a slide that the student had difficulty pronouncing. YOU read each sentence with a short pause after it. Then have your student repeat if time allows (and then give the parents this tip): "To help Roy with pronunciation, please have him practice reading aloud at home. I suggest rewatching our class recording from today. IAt the end of the lesson, I read the sentences one at a time. Play the clip of me reading as Roy underlines each word with his finger. Then have him repeat the sentence. Do this activity three times for each sentence, daily." Does this idea make sense? Ha!
Thanks for the video! It was very helpful! What kind of activities would you have parents do with students to practice pronunciation? I just don't want them to practice the wrong pronunciation.
THi, Christy! You're welcome...thanks so much for watching! That's a great question. To ensure accurate pronunciation, I suggest directing them to the playback of your class....so that they can listen to you again! I also often recommend VIPKid's digital library which includes some auditory items. :)
This was extremely helpful! Thank you Tina and Melody! I have been assigning other 'homework' like you have been suggesting, but, I have had some parents say they didn't know if they'd have time to do it. I realized that I'm not aware of what the homework actually looks like for my students.- I think it would be so helpful to have a full understanding of what the students are seeing and what they have access to. I believe if I could have access to the same materials- it would make me a much more competent and effective teacher. (Also, I would have a much better idea about the flow of a unit- and I could support the learning lesson by lesson much more effectively.) Is there a way that I can access this information that I may not be aware of ? Thanks, again!-Teacher Hollie UI
Hello, Hollie! That's a great point. I agree that it would be really helpful for us teachers to have access to the student materials. I believe that I asked this question to VIPKid in the past and there was a concern about people using the content to teach off of VIPKid's platform, so that's why we don't have access to it...but to verify, I just submitted a Freshdesk ticket! I asked if we could have access somehow. I will let you know when I hear back! :D Thanks for visiting my channel, Hollie!
I am brand new at teaching for VIPKID, but I have watched enough videos to know that parents want to help their children have better pronunciation. So, this past week, I have been more specific in my feedback concerning the student's pronunciation. I've noticed that it is quite common for my students to pronounce a word with a "short -i" sound as if it were a "long-e" sound. For example, saying "hill" as "heel." Today I wrote a note to a parent about her child who was saying a "long-i" sound as if it were a "short-a" sound. She was saying "fan" instead of "fine." I am wondering if that is enough explanation to help the parent drill words with their child.
I've been concerned about giving "optional" homework because of the capabilities of my students. Mostly, I suggest writing specific sentences and watching the playback. The majority of my students are slow going with learning English. I've been tagged as patient, so you can imagine the kids I attract. ;) I would love to hear more homework ideas. Thank you for your video. :) * I'm sorry that my original post was unclear.
Hi there! I think that it's fine to give "homework" and if they decide not to do it, that's their choice. 😊 Do you mean that you'd like specific examples of what you could "assign" as homework? I'm curious to hear what you envision. Perhaps I can put together a "cheat sheet" of some sort! Thanks for your help!
@@KristinaGarcia I sometimes suggest that a student student a topic in their workbook and then rewatch the slides on that topic and practice. I also tell parents to have the student review the sentences and words I type in the chat box. I like the idea of using flashcards. I think I will suggest that for my level 2 students who need to work on specific words in the lesson.
@@theresahemingway3629 Love those ideas!! I think it's really helpful for us to use the chatbox...great point! I'm curious to hear if your students end up practicing with flashcards!

This was a great video. THank you. I have to ask, what lipstick brand do you use? hahaha I do not usually wear it. However, I am drawn to the color in your videos. haha I can see how it would be useful to draw the students attention to the mouth when we are showing them proper pronunciation.
Hi there, Teacher Michael! Asking for feedback isn't everyone's style. Feel free to ask questions as a way of sparking conversation. Thanks for watching and commenting, Michael!😃
I just finished my Smart Demo today, so you know I'm very new to all this. As I'm listening to the fantastic suggestions, I'm thinking, "How am I going to organize all this?" "How am I going to remember that little David is supposed to count from 1-15 for me in our next class?" (and remember things my other students also). My brain is over-heating! lol
Thank you for this great video! I love the idea of quality over quantity with feedback. I'm excited to write new feedback after learning so many great tips from this video!
I love this video!! I am wondering... How would you adjust the level up for a level 1 student? Like if it is really easy to repeat but really difficult to answer questions?
Thanks, Vivian! So happy that you enjoyed it. Ooh, that's a great question! As long as the student has mastered the target sentences and vocab, I think one way is to teach some new vocab and practice using the target sentences! For example, if the student has mastered, "I can run" then use TPR and teach "I can swim" and "I can sing." :D
Hi, Sara! So happy to hear you enjoyed the video...let me know if you have any ideas for helpful videos! Thanks for stopping by my channel and leaving this kind comment! 😁
I have students who consistently struggle to retain their new vocabulary. I will be making the flashcard suggestion to these parents! I also love the idea of seeing feedback as a conversation. I have one parent who seems a lot like Melody -- our detailed feedback flows like conversation. She makes me a better teacher because of her requests and suggestions. I will be asking other parents more specifics about their feelings and desires for our class time. LOVE your background! :)
Hi there, Heather! So happy to hear you were able to take away some tips from this video. Isn't it so special to have a connection like that with a parent? I think your other students' parents will be pleasantly surprised that you wish to engage with them! GOOD LUCK and let me know how it goes!!
i would add an emphasis in your feedback how the student can practice outside of class TL that may be something that is difficult for the student. Like teaching music, a student may gain understanding in a class, but the weaknesses in class will be extremely helpful to guide the students on areas that practice. Practice makes perfect. Is the homework part of a standardized thing or do teachers need to give it?
Hi there, Erik! We have the same puppet...what fun! Anyway, thanks for stopping by my channel. As VIPKid teachers, we're not required to assign our own homework outside of class. I've discovered through working with many VIPKid families, though, that the parents often desire specific ideas for helping their child at home. So it's up to you whether you "assign" anything in addition to what the student is already doing for homework through VIPKid. I always keep in mind that it's not mandatory for the students to do anything I "assign" as additional homework; I simply like to provide suggestions for the parents!
Teacher Tina, do you still use Feedback Panda? I am trying to decide if I want to use it or not. I have watched your video interview with the creator of FBP.
Hi, JoLynn! Great question. Yes, I still use FBP...but I use it more for the perk of easily tracking the feedback I've left for my students than for generating the feedback. I still think it's a worthwhile service!
Thanks Kristina. I am going to incorporate asking the parents questions about what they want into my feedback. They will want to answer me so they will leave me feedback.
Hi, Barbara! Yes!! Most people have an innate desire to reciprocate kindness. Let me know how it goes once you start doing this step. Thanks for your kind comment, Barbara! 😊
This is probably a stupid question, but what does she mean by "just go through the slides"? Does she mean a teacher who doesn't use TPR, props, extension, etc?
Not a stupid question at all! Yes, I think she means a teacher who pretty much only uses the slides. It sounds like you're probably not that kind of teacher, since it sounds like it's hard for you to imagine that kind of a class!
Hi, Cheri! It's so great to hear from you! I actually still enjoy using Feedback Panda for its tracking abilities. I've simplified my feedback a lot but still find that it helps!
9:10 - "prepare for class." Really? With what additional time? Most teachers are seeing the lesson for the first time right when the students sees it. But if VIPKID wants to pay me off-time for lesson prep, I'm game.
Whether you prepare for a class is up to you. 😊 Many teachers I know like to gather specific props and whatnot ahead of time. Personally, even as a new teacher, I rarely spent more than five minutes preparing for a class. Feel free to check out how I did it then: bit.ly/PREPforCLASSES Thanks for stopping by my channel!
I am a parent from China, but I am not a Vipkid customer. so it is not violation if any of vipkid teacher who want to talk to me. I am teaching my daughter by myself now. I am interesting in Vipkid but I think it is not a good time to pay for it. You guys are English native speaker but most of you are not a Mandarin or Cantonese speaker, How can I trust you know where is the pain point of a Chinese in learning English progress?
Hello! How interesting! You make a great point. I think it behooves us English teachers to learn another language so that we can be more compassionate toward our students. I started learning Mandarin a few months ago and I think it has made me a better English teacher for my Chinese students. In fact, I started a community of VIPKid teachers learning Mandarin (See the video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/0lOUWHcFX6E/v-deo.html). I know many VIPKid teachers who are fluent in Mandarin and I think they are exceptional! As for those of us who don't have a great understanding of Madnarin or Cantonese, I think we simply have a different approach.

Oh, wow!! Thanks so much for sharing. My guess is that parents were happy with you and figured that they didn't need to bother reviewing you. Happy to hear that you're now seeing a big difference! Congratulations!!!
This is the best thing I have heard so far on how to give good feedback. It will change my feedback entirely!
Hi, Amy! Wow--thanks so much for your kind comment! I'm so happy to hear it will help you write your feedback! Cheers! :D
Teacher Tina. You nailed it with this video. While I am not a VIPKID teacher (yet), I was a teacher for many years. I found out that giving feedback to my parents about their child was actually teaching the parent. Once I thought of it that way, my feedback became so much better. Thanks so much for explaining this concept in such a clear and entertaining manner.
@UCiCZN9GYQzN6XkFgMqTbPIQ Absolutely, I would LOVE your help getting hired. I have asked for you as my referring mentor. When you get a chance, I have a question about Fast Pass - which I attended in NYC Dec. 10. THANKS so much!
Hi, Andrea! I appreciate you stopping by my channel! Yes, it's so true---we are teaching the parents, too!! So happy to be a part of your VIPKid journey, my dear! :D
I have changed how I write feedback for about 6 weeks now. I have recieved more feedback from parents ever since.
Amazing!!! Thanks for sharing...and congratulations, Leslie!
I am completely transformed by your way of expression
I am from India n also an english teacher
Wow...thank you so much! That is very kind of you to say. From one English teacher to another...thank you!
Love it!
It's so sweet of you to leave these kind comments, Emily! Thanks so much. I love the idea of a triangle....it's only strong when all three sides are there!
I just passed my mock class. Now I'm working on my Profile, especially the 1 min. video snd the bio. This video had helped a lot. 2 thumbs up! Tina, as usual you hitbit out of the park.
You rock, Mike! I'm amazed by how quickly you got hired. Thanks for working hard...and for your encouragement! 😁
You are amazing! This approach is a game changer. I have pieced milled the responses. However, I am now super excited to give my feedback a new make over!
Wow--thanks so much for YOUR feedback, Sandra! I really appreciate it! :D I hope that you enjoy this new approach and see the benefits!
Love this! It's so good to hear straight from the parent what they want. Thanks!
Hi, Dana! Thanks so much for YOUR feedback!! So happy to hear you enjoyed the video. If I were to interview a parent again, what would you want to hear?
I'm not sure. I'm very interested to SEE what the student sees in the classroom. What the class looks like from the student perspective would be interesting.

Tina, I love these videos where you interview a parent. Your videos are always so helpful and practical. Thank you!
Hi, Shelley! Thank you so much for that feedback. If I were to do another video with Melody, what would you like to hear? I appreciate your kind comments!! 😀
Hi Kristina
Thanks for this awesome video. I think at VIP KID you can either work on auto pilot or really take it a step further and try to make a difference. I appreciate your efforts to help us do the latter. Keep up the great work and thanks for helping all of us teachers to be our best!
Wow, what a kind comment! Thank you SO much! I'm elated to hear that you feel that way. I appreciate the sunshine you just added to my day, Miriam! 😍
Thank you. This is not only encouragement for direction.
You're welcome, Teresa! Thanks for visiting my channel! 😃
Wow, this is much needed. Everything you hit on is exactly what I wrote down in my journal to ask at the workshop this weekend. Thank you SO much! This video needs to be everywhere.

Thank you for this video. Do you think it's appropriate to direct the student to a UA-cam video of the bossy E rule, for example?
Hi, Adelita! It's my pleasure!! Most people in China do not have a way to access UA-cam at home, so that may not be the most suitable option. How long is the video?
I had this idea too! And then I realized that in China, they do not have UA-cam. HOWEVER, they have a website called Youku.com, which is their version. You can just go to Youku.com and use the search engine bar like we use ours in UA-cam to check if a video is up there. Most of our educational-type videos are!

Ha!
@@KristinaGarcia Yes, it makes sense, and I think it's a great suggestion! Thank you so much for your reply 😄
@@CurbingtheChaos Oh, great! Happy to hear it was helpful. Good luck!!
What do YOU think is important to include in the parent feedback? I'd love to hear! Thanks for watching! :D Tina
Yes, I would like to see more optional homework ideas. A cheat sheet would be amazing! Thanks for taking the time to respond. I am grateful. :)

Hi there, Jackie! 😁 I really appreciate your kind feedback. I'm planning to create another video about feedback. Any questions?
I love this video!! I am wondering... How would you adjust the level up for a level 1 student? Like if it is really easy to repeat but really difficult to answer questions?
Thanks, Vivian! So happy that you enjoyed it. Ooh, that's a great question! As long as the student has mastered the target sentences and vocab, I think one way is to teach some new vocab and practice using the target sentences! For example, if the student has mastered, "I can run" then use TPR and teach "I can swim" and "I can sing." :D
This was really helpful, thank you!

Thank you very much! Love your channel, by the way! 😃
So, what I am hearing is that perhaps Feedback Panda is not the best route to take.
Thanks, this is great advice and something I can implement right away.
