2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Vs. 2022 Ram 1500 TRX: Comparison Review (On and Off-Road Impressions)

- Join us as we get an on and off-road look at the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R and 2022 Ram 1500 TRX.
Fans of old-school American muscle may weep and gnash their teeth at the advent of modern, electrified powertrains. But despite protestations to the contrary, there’s maybe never been a better time to be a supercharged V8. Blown eight-cylinder engines now appear in everything ranging from muscle sedans to track-ready sports cars, from family-sized SUVs to desert-ready supertrucks.
It’s the latter category that’s piqued my interest most lately. The Ford F-150 Raptor has been a fixture of high-speed off-roading since its debut in 2010, but for its second generation, Ford ditched the V8 in favor of a downsized and twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. That move left some enthusiasts cold, but luckily, Ram and its parent company Stellantis dropped the legendary Hellcat 6.2-liter V8 under the hood of the TRX, a wide-body, long-travel version of the 1500 pickup. The Raptor suddenly had some company, a rival whose supercharged engine note inspires a lot more hoonery than the powerful, but aurally challenged, Ecoboost V6.
The Blue Oval soon returned volley with the 2023 F-150 Raptor R, which also gets a heart transplant courtesy of a muscular corporate sibling - in this case, the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. With 700 horsepower under the hood, the Raptor R is down (barely) on the TRX, but it compensates with 400 fewer pounds of body fat. With nearly identical ground clearance and wheel travel, picking a winner from only a spec chart is all but impossible. Guess I’ll have to hit the road (and the dirt) to figure out which of these dinosaurs is the best.

Problem is…..I do have 110k to spend on a raptor R. 1) I can’t order one 2) I will never, ever pay the dealer markup that they are asking. Even 10k over sticker is an idiot move. Fools part with their money, smart people don’t.

Bang for your buck…TRX all day…and I’m happy to own one. I can’t describe the Road presence my truck has. You know when a TRX is on the road and in your proximity. A Raptor you don’t know if it’s a R or eco boost until it drives near you.
Furthermore the Hellcat cast iron block and engine is the epitome of longevity, they are bulletproof. The Raptor R is 111k and 99.9% of the truck is recycled from its V6 cousin. The TRX is wider and longer than a Raptor and screams get out of my way.
You didn't mentioned that TRX has much better interior filling and the leather quality with gigentic LCD screen.

Facts bro. Ford boys are full of shit just trying to hate on everything that’s not a Fore. For that I’ll say Ford already halted production on the Raptor R for oil leaks and seal issues, tons are being recalled, already.
TRX for me. It’s also $35-50k less with mark ups. Win win.
Cheap imitation is cheap, sounds about right if I can’t buy the original I won’t buy it period but that’s just me. Raptor all the way.

I think the Raptor looks better I guess, more modern anyway while the TRX looks more imposing. I think when comparing exhaust the Raptor sounds better but if you compare the engine, intake sound combined with that supercharger then the TRX sounds better. So out back Raptor sounds better up front TRX sounds better. These 2 badass trucks attributes mimics each other so close, you'd think they were made by the same manufacturer and development team. Really the biggest and most meaningful difference between these 2 is the fact that the Raptor has more agility thanks to it's lighter weight, which fits it's name just right as you know Raptors are a lot lighter, quicker, and more agile than a T-Rex. Either way no winner here except for the consumers, it will come down to brand loyalty.
You are pretty spot on just with how much these trucks go for I wouldn’t trust my money with a dodge product
@@OleSevers I agree whole heartedly. I am not a fan of FCA products whatsoever and thats from my personal experiences. So if I was buying one of these it would definitely be the Raptor R.

Agree. Their time for the TRX seems off, too. Not sure why both are several tenths slower than other reviewers are getting.

Ram grille, overall, could be a bit bigger and more boxy. Gets too pointy and narrow towards the front

R is not much expensive compared to TRX but you have to donate really high price to the falling economy of dealerships for the R.
I’ve owned both, I personally prefer a raptor.
Personally I love the look of the TRX much better , and the fellow is right about the sound of that Hellcat motor …… looks more aggressive on exterior plus the interior I prefer and that sound of the TRX makes it my choice.………what about fuel consumption of both ?
Well, Ford has had 15 years to make the Raptor better. Ram has done and incredible job in just 2 years! My choice would be the Ram. It will only get better.

@Bruce Dragon1000 the TRX has been to baja with other raptors and has not broke once. Only area it's lacking is shocks. It definitely needs bigger shocks, but overall it does great with what it has.

Lets just thank The SRT guys for putting that beautiful Hellcat engine in the TRX or the Raptor R would have never happened. I have had two gen2s and now own a TRX if that tells you anything. I spent a lot of time at the Ford house with the Ecoboom.

I have owned 4 raptors two generation ones one generation two and then the generation three raptor r and I’ve owned my TRX for two years .. The build quality doesn’t even compare the fox shocks are better for Baja but overall the TRX smokes it and there’s nothing better than a 6.2 L hellcat super charge.. I also on several cars you wish you had my car game and do you wish you had my game you own a Prius that had the carburetor stolen out of it.. respect real game and don’t hate levitate work hard and you could do the same
