I thought I was the only one who think it's about overcoming depression. The way Taeyong said "Yesterday is today, today is yesterday" is just spot on. And also the whole chorus has that bleak vibe, so creative. The sound of the ticking clock and passing railways are just hypnotizing.
I never knew ppl were assuming it's a sexual song ._. The vibe they're giving off is not of sexiness at all, yes the voices are deep, but it has a tired and draggy style that showcases well what the song is about. For me it's always been a weird and dark sounding song.

I read somewhere that some people see this as more of a happy upbeat song. I'm like what? When I listen to this song, I listen to it to drown out the world when my emotions starts to get the better of me. It's one of their few songs I gravitate to like that in terms of just being there to vibe with and just relax and block out the world, and now finally seeing the english translation of the lyrics, it just hits home for me even more in terms of how I would feel when I decided to listen to this particular song.
The slow kinda sly beat might sound like a sexier tone but to me it sounds tiring and slurred

I’m just tryna figure out why Taeyong looks that good when he’s literally yawning in his picture..
sO, there are the five classic senses: sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch. Now, two more recent ones have revealed themselves, the 6th and 7th senses.
The 6th being the *vestibular system* which manages the perception of our body in relation to gravity, movement and balance
For example, knowing whether you're going up or down in an elevator and whether you're sitting up or lying down.
nOW, the 7th sense is called *proprioception*
Basically, the brain being aware of the relative position of your limbs. "It lets us know exactly where our body parts are, how we are positioned in space and how to plan our movements."
For example, close your eyes and try to clap your hands. Easy, right? Hold your hand out away from you and close your eyes, now focus on the position and location of your hand in your mind. Your brain is already well aware of your hand's position, yet you were using none of the other 5 classic senses to detect it. This is proprioception; *the 7th sense*
Now that that's out of the way, I wanna mention lucid dreaming. A lucid dream is when you're aware that you are dreaming; you're aware of yourself lying in bed, but are still engaged within a dream. It is possible to take control of the dream in this state of lucidness.
It is also very easy, once consciousness is achieved, to move from the dreaming state to an awakened one. When you're aware of yourself dreaming, it takes only a little extra thought to "open your eyes" to "what's real" ( to wake up ).
The boys describe what seems like the thoughts of a person struggling with depression. "In this cold world, I'm closing my eyes. Laying down in bed, covering my ears. Yesterday is today, today is yesterday. I'm only filled with late self-guilt," and, "I'm a mess, I don't even know myself."
Notice the recurrence of the concept of sense? "Closing my eyes", "covering my ears", and the mention of "laying down in bed", further hinting at dreaming.
Perhaps the dream represents a bleak, unending cycle many people experience nowadays. In Mark's verse, he raps about how he's spending most of his time in an uncomfortable place even after several NIGHTS, "mindlessly going around until I CLOSE my eyes." He's stuck in this dream, this cycle of depression, trying to escape by closing his eyes. But you cannot close your eyes if you're already asleep dreaming. No, you must *open your eyes* to leave the dream
Perhaps the message intended on being portrayed within this song is that, as you can become aware of yourself in bed dreaming (lucid dreaming & proprioception), a person struggling with negative self-thoughts can realise and become aware of the cycle they are stuck in and further *open their eyes*
Open their eyes to themselves, who they are, and what's real. I'm not saying depressed people are weak or that they should just suddenly rewire their brain and stop being sad. No. However, speaking from experience, we tend to believe things we tell ourselves that aren't actually true.
'I'm not pretty, my life sucks, they don't want me to hang with them, it's my fault.'
Which collaterally roll together over time and give the feeling of "Hate is on me. Each day repeats but it's okay," and that perhaps, we deserve to feel this way.
NCT U from four years ago wants you to OPEN YOUR EYES.
Quietly, open your eyes. Because often the fight to become aware of your inner struggles and how to surpass them is a battle that must be fought within oneself. The fight isn't extravagant or loud, but is one that takes time ("baby we'll take it slow"). However, please reach out if you've opened your eyes but are unsure of what to do next. The fight can be quiet, but it doesn't have to be lonely.
From Taeyong's verse 2:31 till the end of the song, the lyrics become more positively inclined. "I've been awakened from a deep sleep. My seventh sense." And then, "a different dream is getting closer. Now I understand, as if everything's mine." He's aware of himself and his thoughts - the lies and the truths.
In lucid dreaming, you can become aware and take control of the plot, storyline, characters and your own decisions within the dream. It becomes yours ("as if everything's mine"). In the same way, your life is yours, choose how you want the storyline to go.
The "I'm not alone" at 3:22 does come off as a lil creepy at first, but maybe its intention is to let anyone else stuck in a bad dream know that *you're not alone* , others are fighting to open their eyes too

Explain what it makes me feel. When I hear it, it seems like time has slowed down and I’m left to battle this strange void.
When I first read the lyrics, Taeyong’s verses struck me really hard. He’s talking as if he’s stuck in an endless loop of deceptive dreams and the entire song gives off this slow and tiring vibe, as if nothing makes sense.
The entire time, they are struggling to keep up with the world, struggling to keep their eyes open. Like Taeyong’s first line literally is ‘I close my eyes to this cold world’ and then the chorus goes ‘open your eyes, now open your eyes.’
I like to think of it as a perfect representation of the darker side of depression and anxiety.
Now that I properly read the lyrics, I just love this song even more. It's amazing.. I actually don't really listen to kpop (I listen to more krnb and korean folk) and would've never expected to like and listen to a kpop song as much as this
