The R107’s have no guts (other than the Euro .500). The r230 and r231 do not have the build quality. The R129 has the guts and the build quality and it is drop dead good looking so that is why I bought it.

I beg to differ. My 2013 R231 is divine. So comfortable you could live in it. And the 516 pound feet of torque is a dream. You can have your old school SL, but the R231 is king on all fronts in my book! As biased as I know I am.

AGREE! After several years of looking for my next toy, my ‘97 SL 320 is The Swan Song for the last “old school” SL… On all levels. The symbiotic harmony between technology, true Grand Touring and heritage, this is it, period. Amazing are the nimble attributes for form and function, and nothing shy of a home run for MB and Bruno Sacco.

@@CorrectingChristians I actually do agree with you as to the merit of the r231 as a vehicle.
Let me spread some heresy now. I own a r129 98 600 and the same year 500. They are true SL - as in top of the brand flagships. r231 is not the flagship, nowhere close to it. I believe they are an afterthought for MB with the SLS, S cabrio and the AMG GT. So for me the SL heritage ended with the 07-08 facelifted r230. Don't like the 09 facelift of r230 and r231 front either. Too ricey for me, too much of a pimped Acura feel to it

R107 is the perfect combination of classic style but still very enjoyable to drive. It's also simple and straight forward to maintain and fix...a spanner and screwdriver is almost enough for tooling and parts are easy to find...so my vote goes to R107... maybe I'm a little bias as I have a R107 300SL in my garage :-)

I inherited a 1980 R107 from my dad 7 years ago. My dad got it in 1986 (2nd owner). The first 16 years of ownership my parents lived in Green Bay, WI so the car was stored in the winter and was really a weekend toy. The next 14 years my parents retired to Las Vegas so my dad drove it year round. I live in the Midwest, Michigan when I got it and now northwest of Chicago so it’s back to being a weekend summer toy. The car has about 180,000 miles which sounds like a lot but when you realize the car is 43 years old, that’s only a little over 4000 miles per year. I think my wife actually enjoys driving it more than me. It’s a great car to tour around on country roads or through small towns at low speeds. It always turns heads and is a real conversation starter. While it handles very nicely at high speeds, I am not a fan of the wind noise of the convertible. I have the removable hard top but I never use it. It hoisted up to the ceiling of my garage. As I said, it’s a great touring car. But I prefer a drivers car. I’ve never driven the R 231 but I think I would enjoy it. From you video, I get that impression. I’ll probably never get rid of the R107, mostly because it was my dad’s. And for driving around the country there’s nothing better.

Owned my 1999 R129 SL320 for 8 years now and love it dearly, did flirt with the 107 body but it's so old fashioned in terms of performance and practicality. The prior models are just too expensive for the ordinary man and the build quality on later models leaves a lot to be desired so the R129 has to be the pick of the bunch in my opinion! Ah, head gasket and suspension... been there, done that...
I thought the head gasket was a specific weakness of the old in-line six cylinder but apparently it also befalls the V6. It wasn't even an exotic engine - if I 'm not mistaken, they used it for everything from C- to S-class, so they must have built hundreds of thousands of those things...
Have you done the LED conversion yet? I just looked up Osram's compatibility table for their LED system and didn't find the SL on it - if you have experience, please let me know which system you used and how hard it was fitting it.

I owned a light blue metallic R129 from 2012 to 2018. Bought the car in Australia after it lived in GB, Hong Kong, then shipped to Au by the original owner. Car had 31,000 miles (not km as car was British spec) and the "Catalytic 'delete'" option. Interior was Royal Blue. When the self-tensioner on the passenger belt broke (by law you cannot repair 'safety equipment and a new belt must be installed) I contacted EVERY Mercedes source including al of their worldwide network of parts warehouses. I found the VERY LAST new belt in the world. These were built with a pyrotechnic device wired into the front collision sensor and if you hit something or got hit, the pyrotechnic device would be triggered to create gas pressure to instantaneously tighten the belt. Only problem: Belt cost $!,1000 in USA and to ship to Au was $800 as Fedex or any other carrier said the pyrotechnic tensioner was HAZMAT as it was explosive. When the 'autoleveller' device failed a new one was $1700. I found one on another chassis model MB built. the parts guy said "It ain't gonna fit"...I said "if it don't fit, I own it & I'll eat it" it fit... cost $80 + $50 fast airfreight to Au. Although the car was only about 25 yr old and impeccably kept up, all the interior plastic parts from windscreen trim to air vents were beginning to disintegrate and even a sun visor new is $500. so prepare yourself to have deep pockets. One thing makes it worth it- the roar of a 5 liter V8 quad cam motor with twin ignition distributors. The soft top hydraulics with 11 pistons and a trunk pump will run you approx. $6000 to properly repair. The front grille strips are pure titanium and were 'cutoffs" from MB Aviation parts I believe.

The oldest two are the prettiest and have the most organic driving experience. WIth no electronics and solid engineering, they're also going to last forever. Of course the newer ones are safer and faster and have more modern comfort features, but I'd still choose one of the oldest two, if I could afford it. Which I can't.

Undoubtedly the R129 is amazing value but with more complexity and potentially expensive problems. For freedom, style and affordability, I pick the r107. The 198 and 113 are unaffordable. The R129 is also a nice car, which I would put 2nd to
the R107. Then the pagoda 113. Then the R231. Then the 300sl 198. After that, the R230.

I still have my 1989 R129, i am presently overhauling the car, its black with the gray skirt straight 6 engine, 24 valve , Mercedes Benz Macclesfield UK told me i have a very very nice SL ( sports light ) Spares can be difficult to come by so it is a challenge, Recently i had to source a new Rad, Mercedes Ellsemere port couldnt help me i found one in California !!!!!!!! my options were recore the rad or carry on looking, i found a new rad in Berlin .
It is an enjoyable car to drive especially at night with the roof off in the summer. Sometimes when i drive the car along motorways other drivers pull up by the side and give me the thumbs up sign, Strange i do the same when i see the Morris minor 1000 car i owned one as a 17 year old . I am now 71 and have to say who wants to go electric when you have one of these in your garage ! thank you for the video Cheshire UK.

I love all but the latest model.
    All others bring back memories.
The 113 was the first car I ever drove, being even too young to have a license!
A nice USA style (not everybody loves the bumpers or the headlights) 107 was owned by an uncle of mine in white with a blue interior, which he later in life transferred to an anthracite with creme interior, keeping the USA look.
The first ever glimpses on one of the first delivered 129's in a city near my hometown, in black during the evening, slowly cruising. That car was master!
What to say about the 198's. I'm very blessed to know a guy who ownes several of these including the gullwing door versions. Not all are in mint condition but I believe the market does not care much and prices are roughly the same.
Besides, the 230 looks very Chinese already.

Here in America we favor the R129 and R230 for the design, quality and power. Countless volumes have been written about the swagger of leather wrapped power roll bars. I personally favor the V12 experience up on the high speed interstates where they can display true road weaponry at speed over very long distances. The ability to make a 700 mile trip feel like 200 is prized in continent crossing SL's. The R230 is a particularly good roadster with it's exclusive combination of 8 locking compartments, exclusive rack and pinion steering, glass hardtop roof, superior aerodynamics, start button console shifter and steerable Bi-Xenon headlights. It also is the last SL with a full air pump and spare tire kit. Peak SL in my opinion.

For me the most beautiful SL of the last four decades is the R129 with its fabric roof (as well as an additional hardtop). Especially the ones without too many facelifts from the earlier 90‘s …true(er) to the famous designers (Bruno Sacco) styling intention of the car. In my opinion this car doesn’t require one of those big engines (V12 or even V8) because they don’t make it a sportier car anyway . It always has been a beautiful luxurious cruiser type of car…therefore the three liter V6 is really enough (it’s as quiet as the V12 and makes the car less top heavy …especially in corners, apart from having much less fuel consumption).

Having owned a 107 and now having owned a 129 for the last 9 years I still think the 129 is the best compromise. Not quite as beautifully styled as the earlier models and not quite as luxurious and modern as the later models but just enough nostalgia combined with modern to be a good compromise and still a decent buy though they take some $ to maintain appropriately.

I had a 1956 190SL back in the mid-1960s that was a great car, albeit prone to rust. As a student, maintenance expenses became a problem so I traded it even for a year-old VW beetle, that served me well until I moved to NYC and no longer needed a car.
By 1985 I was living in Kansas City and decided to find a cabriolet sports car in Europe and bring it home. When Chrysler failed to actually produce their promised Italian bodied car in it's original form, I was 'back on the proverbial "drawing board." This brought me back to the Mercedes marque and my mother'c coupe with the M-110 inline 6 engine convinced me to start there. Expecting to end up with a 2 door W-124 coupe, I headed off to Germany where I discovered that most local buyers were opting for a 5-speed stick with the M-110 engine in a WB-107 body. Until I got there, I did not even know this car existed as it was never officially 'available' in the USA.
To make a long story shorter, I ended up buying a new 1985 280SL that I still drive regularly along with a more recently acquired 1948 MGTC. I've had a lot of cars over the years and driven even more, but I can definitively say that this Mercedes is the best car I've ever seen or driven anywhere whe you balance acquisition and maintenance costs against utility and value. I would recommend it to any potential SL buyer, if you can find a good one!!!🙂

My favorite SL is the 1989-2001 Mercedes Benz SL 500, because it's still have that classic Mercedes look a true German perfection and in my opinion still on the classic looking cars side with very modern technology all over modern engine, modern suspension, modern safety features, and just a fantastic truly classic modernized Mercedes Benz look, but somehow the W129 SL is the one which still give me a very interesting feeling ever since I checked the first one out what I seen in Germany back in 1990s this SL was blowing every German mined away in the 1990s. When you looked at the W129 SL in the 1990s it felt like you are like 30-40 years ahead in the future with a very interesting modernized classic Mercedes Benz look. The W129 SL in my opinion the best classic Mercedes Benz SL ever built. Absolutely a fantastic car, amazing a great car. The Best!
