Perfect adherence to sruthi, crystal clear notes, rich, heavy gamakas, and holding the mood of the raga captive throughout. A flawless performance if ever there was one.
Thank you so much Subrata ji, you made my day. I often thought if Vilayat Khan Sahib has played this Rag completely. I have heard the Alap only. Khan Sahib is the "Shahinsha of Sitar" I am honored to have known him and my life would not have been the same without his music.
One of the best Bilakhani Todi presentations ever heard....tabla is also restrained and has class..mature audience, no clapping at tabla high points...great recital..thanks a ton for upload...
Both Vilayat Khan and Shamta Prasad has played with such restraint which has created the right mood for this raga. It is said that Tansens son composed this raga when his fathers body was being taken away after his death

Subrata Chowdhury Ustadji's concentration on development and elaboration of the raga in this particular recording is absolutely pereceptible decades later sitting in a different continent and listening to it through recorded medium - really amazes me every time I listen to it !
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the drut gat here is Gujari Todi. The gat is Bhor bhayi which is a famous piece performed by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali. You can find that on youtube.

In the drut teen taal section Ustad V.K. has played rag Miyan Ki Todi. Excellent rendition with superb execution of few sapat taans.

Vilayat Saab had seldom played any raag with such introspection. A masterpiece that could be framed and preserved at a gallery.
Drut is in Gujri todi. I think it is composition of Ustad Faiyaz Khan Saheb

I think the year was 1974 or 75 not 1980. By the way Nikhil Banerjee has played Shuddh Basant of which recording is available.

It's not b/c I was sitting right behind him on stage during the 1.5 hr Bilaskhani Todi. Then he played a few types of Bhairavi.
... and obviously not the same concert because this is to honour Hafiz Ali Khan Saheb.
