I think that there is a great application for the various levels of armor quality. Obviously, someone who needs to rely on armor consistently and frequently (such as military personnel who engage in combat and police officers who are much more likely to encounter a gunfight than normies like myself) should be far more concerned with the longevity and overall performance with multiple impacts as well as the comfortability/versatility/mobility of the armor they use. And, because I'm a "capitalist pig," I believe that people who WANT this level of performance but don't necessarily NEED it should have access to it. But for rando civilians like myself who want level IV performance for a level IA price, these alternatives can be totally adequate. Personally, I grabbed a couple different "level IV" (not NIJ certified but supposedly perform similarly) plates to see how they held up. I ended up settling on a set of LA Police gear "Level IV" plates in a budget carrier. These plates are made of a polyethylene/alumina recipe and EASILY withstood multiple rounds of 308 AP from an 18" rifle at about 15-20 yards. I didn't have access to any 30-06 AP (like they're supposedly rated) but the 308 AP was VERY impressive considering the steel the managed to penetrate. In total, I have a relatively comfortable, quick detach plate carrier with single contour panels and a MOLLE quad mag carrier that weighs about 25-30 lbs loaded for about $280. I won't tell you that you should get anything I've bought because you need to prioritize your gear for yourself. What I will say is that, for someone like myself who has this for a SHTF budget setup that I've personally tested, it makes me happy. If I had more money, I would absolutely consider getting something a little better. But I'm not relying on this armor everyday. It's just an insurance policy that I can either throw on as needed or throw onto my wife/son if we need to dip out in a hurry. Personally, I think people should get whatever they want but should definitely test stuff out before they begin to trust that it will do what it is supposed to.
