When I was in elementary school, our gym teacher had a 4 team dodgeball variant. He had a weird name for it. We also had coloured pennys to show team colours. There were several balls, I want to say 4 or 8 or more. The 4 team quadrants play areas were essentially divided volleyball court lines, outside from the volleyball court lines to the basketball court lines (the twilight zone) and then the edge of the basketball court to the wall (the dead zone). If you got hit or caught while in the play zone, you would have to do a lap around the twilight zone and if you made it all the way around back your zone, you would rejoin play. However if you got hit while doing the lap, you'd have to go to the dead zone. While in the dead zone (you wouldn't have a lot of room to maneuver between the wall and the basketball court lines) if you got a ball, you could throw at anyone. But if you hit someone who was doing their lap, you could hop back into the twilight zone, finish your lap and rejoin your team. The kicker was, that if at any point in time your team's play area had no players in it, your whole team was eliminated. I remember having a BLAST playing this game. It was pretty chaotic, but I do remember heroic moments of people sliding into their zone to save their team just before the last team member was hit.
My students insisted I write to you and say THANK YOU for your videos! They love playing them. 4 Corner Dodgeball is their favorite yet. Saul says hello
Sherry Yancey Sorry, I'll try to answer with what I do: since you can't obviously merge the diagonal teams, in the case that is supposed to happen, I instead just open up one of the sides so a different team has a larger playing area. Or it looks like you figured out another solution - good idea.

Thank you for the great game! What would you say are your top five games for middle schoolers?

Keynote -> an Apple program
What do you do if diagonal teams are supposed to merge?
Forget it. I just said you couldn't hit people in the diagonal quadrant.

Instead of switching we are out of the game until someone on our team catches the ball
