  • How to Snake a Toilet: Clear a Toilet Clog
    Even I can do it!
I show you a step-by-step way to use an auger to clear a clogged toilet! (Too many videos assumed I was stronger than I am, so I figured out how to snake a toilet and then recorded how to do it.)
Make sure you DON'T use chemicals before using the auger/snake. If you put a chemical into the toilet, using the auger after that can make the chemical splash back on you and will get the chemical on the auger.
Try the auger/snake before trying other methods. A lot of people who've watched this video have written a comment saying it worked! It cleared and the toilet flushes as it should.

Our toilet has been stopped up since yesterday and my husband has tried many ways to unclog it, plunger, bleach, hot water and nothing worked. He finally went out and bought a snake. When he first used it, it didn't work. Then I found your video and it takes a woman to do this correctly. After he watched your video he tried the snake and it worked!!!! Thank you so much!!!

Thank you SO much! This was invaluable - and saved me over $100 in plumbing fees! I appreciated knowing the route the snake had to travel (so I knew what I was dealing with) as well as your clear instructions for how to use the auger cable. Two suggestions for any future videos: (1) after you put the plastic part in the toilet, it would have been nice to see what you were doing (you were off camera). If a friend helped you, the camera could follow all of your moves. (2) I read comments below and noted that the price for a basic auger is less than $9.00. This not only motivated me to try it but kept from buying an unneeded expensive choice. But, overall, you did a great job and I was so excited when it worked on my toilet! So glad you made this video for those of us who have zero knowledge!! : )

2 very Important points missed. 1) Keep turning the handle clockwise while you're feeding it into the toilet, don't just push. 2) Do NOT turn it anticlockwise at any time, it could damage the snake which is just a tightly wound spring.

I just can't thank you enough for this video. I had used my auger over ten times to no avail but did not know the handle had to go all the way; I thought it was only until the coil was invisible. I was literally about to call a plumber when I decided to give it one more go. Took me four or five augerings thanks to your video. You're a life saver!

Thank you so much for coming to my rescue!!! I’ve learned to do many things since my husband passed a couple of yrs ago and this job was the next to learn. I had bought an Auger like yours at HD last night but wasn’t sure how to use it. I was lucky to come across your video. I did exactly as you showed and PRESTO-a toilet that flushes again. Many thanks!!

This was a really helpful explanation. I wasn't using the snake properly and I already scratched the inside of the bowl a bit. Plus, I didn't get the snake all the way through, so it only partially cleared the clog. But your method worked like a charm. Thanks.

The business end of that snake spirals like a cork screw. Usually a clockwise rotation will cause the screw to thread into the object causing the clog. Then you'll want to pull back the cable through the handle, hopefully bringing out the object impaled on the end of the screw.
Turning the handle counter clockwise before removing the cable will disengage the impaled object (clog) and leave it in the toilet, to cause further problems.

    • @r.castano4325
      @r.castano4325 3 роки тому +3

Norman Has Experience. 3 more very important steps: 1) Turn the handle CW as you shove the cable in. It will be easier to push the cable and you will know when you reach the clog. 2 Keep a 5 gal bucket with you when you auger 3) Most important Wear Gloves and goggles. Plumbers have saved more lives than doctors, because, the sewer system prevents all kinds of pathogens, cholera, typhoid fever, bubonic plague, mercers, etc. etc. etc.

    Hi there,
Thanks for this very helpful video! I have two suggestions:
    1) When pushing the snake down and through, turn handle clockwise continually until it's totally in. It seemed to help get in through the pipe.
    2) Right before you're finally ready to remove the snake, leave it in and flush the toilet. This will help pull some of the "residue" off the end of the snake. Thanks for the video!

Can I just tell you right now that you are a godsend, just started and new job as a caregiver today with a Chinese family here in San Mateo California. And what a first day I had, I blocked up the toilet..lol. Good thing I found a plunger and a snake in the garage. Then I ran here to UA-cam and found you, I had no time to practice so I just propped my phone up on the toilet tank and followed your video step by step with the snake. And to my surprise I did it 3 times and then next thing you know the water started flushing down the toilet...lol. Thank you so much for sharing, I thought I was going to have to watch several videos before I found one that actually taught me the right way... So happy I clicked on your video first. God bless you and Happy Holidays to you and your family!

I watched your video and ran down to find my snake and of course it wasn't where had hung it a few years ago. Nice knees. I have a super long snake(pardon the expression) but it had nothing to protect the porcelain and is used for pipes or floor drains. Then I noticed a 6 or 7 foot piece of the thinner version of garden hose that drains water from my sprinkler system- an old hose remnant. I unscrewed the section of hose and stuck the end with no metal fitting into the toilet. Then twisted it as I forced it down through the bottom and it after a few pushes and twists the toilet cleared. I flushed with the hose still in a few times to make sure and it was totally unclogged while cleaning the hose remnant. Success. I can still use the old remnant as a sprinkler system drain tube because I was never close to the part in the toilet and it's located where there is no traffic or it may be preferable to just cut off another section of old garden hose from the garage. Don't forget it was the smaller diameter of garden hose - Like 1/2 inch instead of 3/4.
Cost for garden hose remnant - Free
Cost to buy toilet snake (Home Depot) - $10 - $50 plus the time and hassle of going to the store to buy one.

Very helpful video. The "no assumptions" part is what's missing from most, mainly assuming I have any clue what I'm doing. After watching, I went down to my local Home Depot, purchased the auger for $8.49, came back and problem solved. It snaked in all the way just fine each time and was able to crank indefinitely either way, but the clog didn't free until the third try. Still, success and many thanks.

As I noted to the person who made the video, this motivated me to give it a try (because if it didn't work I had not spent that much money) and it kept me from buying an expensive brand that I didn't need. It worked perfectly for me and I was glad to save so much money. Now I can be more confident about future stop-ups!

His video didn't help us at all with our clogged toilet, but after watching yours we tried again ands after a few tries, hurray! it flushed. we think our friends' kid who was over here the night before may have loaded up the toilet with megawads of toilet paper. anyway, we'll never know what caused the clog, but at least we got through it and no need call in a plumber! thanks again.

It worked. Yay. Saved for a $500 plunger cost. You Rock thank you. Everyone, for those people who actually ' scratched the toilet' ' before watching this video" NO WORRIES . This is how you fix it Search for and buy the product called (Bar keepers friend "Cleanser and Polish") all in one. Make sure it says "cleanser and Polish", not just "cleanser" on it for the best results. The scratch will COMPLETY disappear. Like magic.at walmart and home depot even online. Plus Use an unused non-scratch sponge like you use to clean your kitchen pots and pans. keep Rubbing it for about 30 seconds to a minute. It turns Pure white. Wow. I even used it to clean those tiny old rust and lime orange looking stain in the corner that never comes off. It works. Thanks.

Turn the handle clockwise as you feed it into the toilet so the end of the snake can grab the item clogging the toilet and then pull it out. By simply pushing the snake into the toilet, you may push the item clogging the toilet deeper into your drain pipe.

PS I have been successful unclogging toilets with two new tricks as well if you don't have an auger yet:
      1. Pull the lip out of the plunger so it actually has suction (hadn't even known it was there!) and PULL to suction. Btw, the lip in a toilet plunger, is just inside the rubber part and you just pull to unfold it.
      2. Pour one part baking soda into clogged drain. Next, pour three parts vinegar. It will bubble up so back away. Let it sit about 15 minutes. Then pour hot water down toilet drain. I use three pitchers full of hot, not boiling, water. Then flush...viola!

karatechick306 (your comment isn't reply-able) - To clean the auger, you can fill a bucket with soapy water and soak it for a few minutes. Then rinse it off.

When you go to the store to buy the auger, take a few minutes to speak to a store rep. Tell them your toilet is slow. There might be a better option in a different product for a slow toilet. (You might need the auger at another time in the future.) I've found that people in the stores are really helpful!

i believe i posted some gratitude here before, awhile ago..and maybe under one of my other accounts..but just wanted to say, *thanks,* again..because *once again,* your video technique saved me from having to call a plumber.👍😁
this time it was a bit more challenging because the snake had rusted..so i found that [after taking a break & collecting myself] when the length of the coil didn't want to push through the toilet drain, i found that a combination of pushing and then turning the handle - or rather, alternating turning the handle as i pushed and then and pushing it through with all my might, eventually got the coil in as far as it could go..then i just began turning the handle around clockwise for several seconds, and then counter-clockwise for several seconds, then clockwise, alternating like *that* for a few minutes in total..but i should used the have waited to flush it because the water was too high and when i flushed, it overflowed again:
so, i used our 'bellows' plunger to try and make it stop [learned the names after looking them up online..the websites for *Home Depot* & *Lowe's* have photos that go along with the kind of plunger it is]...then the toilet drained itself about a minute after that..i waited until a few minutes after the water was back at it's right level, then flushed it, manually after that, twice - with a few minutes in between each flushing. and maybe this can help someone else:
i've found that even when a snake is not needed, if a clog is too much for a basic plunger [seems they're called "cup" and "tiered" and the 3rd basic kind i've used in the past is called a "flanged" plunger..and a few years ago, i discovered - the hard way - that it's best to have *at least* the one that reminds me of an accordion, called a "bellows" plunger here, in the States, where we're living..or one that is similar called the "beehive" plunger..we have 2 of the basics and one of the bellows kind..and the bellows gets a lot more suction than the basics..we also keep a "cup" plunger for sinks and bathtub/shower drains.
one thing i did, in order to make sure no one uses the cup plunger in the toilet [yuck!😯] is writing on the handle and also all around the rubber plunger part, *"sinks & bathtub/shower drains ONLY,"* ...with a dark colored *permanent ink,* felt tipped pen..because in the old days, with regular toilets, we were able to use those simple ones [the cup kind], they were the only ones we ever had in the house we grew up in..but with low flow toilets [never again! 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️] they're pretty useless..however, i've learned that not everyone thinks it's a big deal to 'borrow' kitchen and bath drain plungers for use in a toilet..so when the plunger is still new, preferably, know that pens, those felt tip, permanent ink ones, are your friends.🤗

This is the best how-to I've ever seen about how to snake a toilet! (I'm a man, by the way.) Here's how to prevent your snake from getting rusty: 1) Clean it immediately after use - you'll probably want to do this anyway. 2) Spray the metal parts lightly with WD-40, and wipe it dry with a rag. 3) Store your snake with the rigid handle inside the plastic tube and most of the coil hanging out. When the weather is dry and not too cold, I like to do steps 1 and 2 outdoors.

This video helped me with an overwhelming problem. My toilet was backed up and plunging was not working. I have a low flow flush and didn't know how to use the auger. The plastic part doesn't have to go in as far, then I push the auger through, then turn the handle. I used the auger 3 times and it didn't look like it was going to unclog the toilet. Then I decided to use the plunger one last time. Success!!!!!! The water went down! The first flush in 2 days that went down the drain as planned!!! Not a lot of elbow grease but, 3 augers and a plunge and I am back in business! Thank you for telling me to feed the snake in first, then turn. It may be obvious to some but, it wasn't to me. Thank you for your help

Great video. I would add that a big part of this is 'Be confident. Keep trying things. You can do it’. Guys need to think that way a lot more than the girls might think. Also, turning the snake as it plunges helps it find its way through the tight corners. Concentrate on working all of the tube, not just making it to the end. And, pulling back the blockage is rarely as important as breaking it up. Did you think you were going to pull back a mass of … and … and … do something with it? Lastly, find the right plunger, and try that first. The plunger won’t scratch the deep parts of the toilet pipes (they are smooth and glossy for a reason). A couple of good pulls with the right plunger (plungers do their magic by pulling not pushing) usually does the trick. Thanks again for reminding me about step one above.

That's weird! My hardware store only carries the type I bought. It's about $15. (Their one other style only has a different handle.)
I've never heard of the coil getting stuck in the toilet. These coils are metal. They look like metal springs that are tightly wound.
It's important that you go to a store where the employees are knowledgeable and helpful. That's why I rarely shop at Home Depot -- it's hard to get help there.

I'm assuming you're over 40.. the reason I say this is due to your comment implying that "ladies" may be less inclined to know how to use a toilet snake. This USED to be a true generalization, but unfortunately.. the current generation of "millennials" have broken that stereotype (not in a good way). Being a father of 3 millennial aged children, I can tell you.. this is one of the first generation in HISTORY that shows true gender equality.. NEITHER of them know how to do things like use a toilet snake. Despite my constant efforts, I can't get my daughter's OR son to pay attention long enough to learn how to work with his hands, use simple tools properly, or even CARE to learn how something as simple as a home plumbing system works. When asked, to draw a picture of a toilet, and how it connects to the sewer main in front of the house, both of them drew a single pipe, with 1 solitaire bend (below ground), attaching to the main. No trap, no vent stack, no "y", no downward pitch. when asked "how does the waste flow out to the main?" they both assumed there's some sort of magic "pump" that the city maintains that turns on when you push the lever. when shown a proper diagram, and asked about the vent stack, both assumed it was for "odor" exclusively. It was damn near impossible to try to explain gravity flushing, siphoning, and how vent stack prevent air-locks. Sometimes I feel doomed knowing they're tomorrow's leaders.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Most of us only have a basic idea how plumbing works. And to think, I used to make fun of plumbers as a kid thinking it's a simple job. Ha, shame on me! Plumbing's the total opposite of easy. I found this out the hard way thanks to having two back to back really cold winters and lots of pipe damage.
