I once had a pleasant conversation with a devout follower of Indra, quite the talented illustrator as well. He lamented that Indra was a bit too much forgotten in modern hinduism, and in his opinion Zeus and Thor were a byproduct of indo-european worship of Indra.

I must say... I partially agree with your friend. A lot of matter evolved as cultures mixed and exchanged ideas.
Even indian philosophy imbibed a lot from other cultures. Acculturation was a positive end result of trade... and yes.. Cultures coming together influenced 2 things conspicuously - Food & Religion.

In that story, he used the foam alone while they were walking on the beach, and received aid from a sage to empower the foam. feeling bad for slaying his friend, he did penance until the gods told him he have been forgiven

Well made and throughly researched! You are absolutely correct on the earlier importance of Indra in pre-upanishadic era.
    Just an up...
Indra stems from the sanskrit word 'Indriya' - the sense organs. Hence Indra is portrayed with both good as well as flawed sides. Though most of his actions are for good, a few are impulsive and due to personal insecurities. During such times, he seems more opportunistic rather than righteous.
Also in the later eras, Indra came to be defined as a post with each group of worlds having it's own Indra. Hence multiple Indra's in the multiverse.
Also, the sage who cursed Indra was Rishi Gautam. Indra bedded the chaste wife of Gautama out of sheer lust. He decitefully lay with her by taking her husband's form. On knowing this, the Rishi cursed Indra that his body would just be a heap of sex organs (1000 to be precise). Indra's body immediately turned up so. However, the curse was lastly modified to 1000 eyes.

Evidence suggests that migrating Caucasian Indo-Iranian tribes were moving in and the Vedic gods were what they worship. Intermingling with the locals eventually saw a decline in the Vedic gods and the rise of the non-Vedic gods the locals worshipped. The emphasis to “higher-mind/spirit” and a focus on otherworldly qualities as opposed to concepts rooted in the natural world aligns with the Indo-Iranians being submerged within the much larger Dravidian population over generations.

They were either most like the Dahae Tribe, and Iranic Tribe in Central Asia, or the Bactria Margiana People of Central Asia. Indra is said to be a loan word from the Bactria-Margiana Language and the description that the “Dasyu lived in forts and castles” is proven by the numerous forts and castle like structures found in their civilization. The harrapan civilization had already most likely died out and moved deeper into the subcontinent themselves, leaving free new pastures for the indo aryans to colonize in the Indus Valley. We see the same in Germanic mythology with Tyr :
"Týr (/tɪər/;[1] Old Norse: Týr, pronounced [tyːr]), Tíw (Old English), and Ziu (Old High German) is a god in Germanic mythology. Stemming from the Proto-Germanic deity *Tīwaz and ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European chief deity *Dyeus, little information about the god survives beyond Old Norse sources. Due to the etymology of the god's name and the shadowy presence of the god in the extant Germanic corpus, some scholars propose that Týr may have once held a more central place among the deities of early Germanic mythology."
I think some Indo-European gods were switched out depending on the circumstances. In war, Thor/Indra was important in the pantheon. In peace, other gods may be more important.

Religious pantheons and everything in mythology and religious iconology makes sense if you consider that the world we see is filtered first by our brain and the actual 'real' world could just be a kaleidoscopic array of nonsensical geometries and stuff like in a hallucinogen trip so all the weird symbols and clothes and weapons and body parts of these deities are actually more real than this world we see. Also, they seem unreal and impossible to us because the 'real' world is just that, nonsensical shapes and events that don't make any sense so the causality and logic operating our world is actually very weak and small compared to the kaleidoscopic chaos and universe sized patterns and Geometries of the 'real' world too big to be observed by our meagre minds.

Krishna, on the other hand ,is the supreme god. He controls everything, Indra borrows his power from him. Indra was also punished by Krishna.
      No comparison..
      Thats hindu mythology(itihasa)
People compare Shiva with krishna. But thats also wrong. Because Shiva is also Supreme God. So Two supremes?
      No..
Both Krishna and Shiva are the same Supreme (Brahman) with different attributes. Both are Supreme..just seeing the same from different perspective.
Similarly Devi (feninine attribute/the 'female' hindu god like Kali) is also Supreme with different perspective

Also what I feel bad about is that while what Indra did that time was a case of adultery, it is propagated as a rape case to demean him. The wife of the sage knew that she was having sex with Indra (he had confessed it before sleeping with her). And she consented out of arrogance (my beauty is so great that even the King of gods cannot control himself).

Manu is a future variant of the murdered Brahma who discovered a secret dimension that allowed him to go back in time and warn his preincarnation of his impending doom at the hands of Shiva and the 70 Asuras. Having saved the life of Brahma, his father Anshar, and his father Apsu, Manu was granted the status of full member of the pantheon. But Manu was always just a reincarnation of Brahma, understand? To punish the Titans, the 70 spirits were to be destroyed, but Manu negotiated for their return. His idea was accepted, but he would have to die once for each of the 70, to atone for their treason. Brahma shattered and scattered their spirits across time and space until they became all of you - everyone who is reading this. One of the reincarnations of Manu was Indra, naturally equated with Brahma, but also a separate deity. Understand? Together, Indra and Anu were Brahma: the Pair of Men. They were Jupiter: the Two Fathers. They were Zeus: meaning in the cardinal and ordinal sense, Two, Second. They were Jesus and his Father, who were "one". Understanding Indra and his role to Manu is imperative to understanding politics today.

So he is imp but not that much. Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Ganesh, Kumar, all the Devis are higher gods

So up on this he committed sin disguising himself as sage Gautam for an earthly women. Indra is a king of Devalokha (demi gods dimension). We are in the 7 th lokha called bhulokha (earthly plane which includes the land of earth and other lands with mount Meru or Mount Sumeru as the central structure)
01 Satya-loka (Lord Brahma's lokha where he meditate to create material world)
    02 Tapa-loka
    03 Jana-loka
    04 Mahar-loka
05 Svar-loka *(aka Deva Lokha usually called heaven)
    06 Bhuvar-loka
    07 Bhu-loka (human relm)
    08 Atala-loka
    09 Vitala-loka
    10 Sutala-loka
    11 Talatala-loka
    12 Mahatala-loka
    13 Rasatala-loka
14 Patala-loka (usually called as hell)
*Svarga Loka is a set of heavenly worlds located on and above Mt. Meru where the righteous live in paradise before their next incarnation. During each pralaya (the great dissolution or flood), the first three realms, Bhu loka (Earth), Bhuvar loka and Swarga loka are destroyed. Below the seven upper realms lie seven lower realms, of Patala, the underworld and netherworld.
Svarga is seen as a transitory place for righteous souls who have performed good deeds in their lives but are not yet ready to attain moksha, or elevation to Vaikunta, the abode of Lord Vishnu, considered to be the Supreme Abode.
The capital of Svarga is Amaravati and its entrance is guarded by Airavata. Svarga is presided over by Indra, the leader of the devas.

1 SATHYA LOKA : This is the highest world in this material Universe and it is the abode of Lord Brahma. His one day + night is 8.6 billion years. He lives here along with Goddess Saraswathi. Those who have attained highest spiritual enlightenment (after many many jenmas) in this material Universe, also reach this place and live here (Moksha within this material universe may be!!!!). At the time of final dissolution, (Maha Pralaya which happens when Brahma completes his 100 years of life span according to the time calculations in this Loka - roughly 311 trillion and 40 billion human years) people living here transform their subtle bodies into spiritual bodies and enter the Vaikuntha planets which begins 26,200,000 yojanas (1 yojana = 8 miles and therefore 209600000 miles) above Sathya Loka. The distance between Sun and Sathya Loka is mentioned as 233,800,000 yojanas ( 1,870,400,000 miles). We can also take it from scientific point of view. Considering the ever expanding Universe, all planets and stars have birth and death. Pralaya and Maha Pralaya could be death of few stars/planets and life beginning afresh in different stars/planets.
2 TAPA LOKA : This is situated 120,000,000 yojanas below Sathya Loka (960,000,000 miles). The four sons of Brahma (popularly called as Sanathkumaras) named Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana and Sanath live here. When Brahma created Universe first, these kumaras are the first beings created by him to aid him in the creation process. But they were not interested in worldly life and hence refused to aid in the creation process. They opted for ever-lasting devotion to God and thus got a boon to live for the entire life of this material Universe (till the full life time of Brahma) and to retain their age as 5.
3 JANA LOKA : It is situated 80,000,000 yojanas (640,000,000 miles) below Tapa Loka. This is the abode of great saints and sages who have attained more spiritual powers than the other lower Lokas They are able to travel between different worlds in such a speed which is unimaginable to us. At the time of final dissolution, (their dissolution time is different) they transfer their subtle bodies to the highest Loka of this material Universe, Sathya Loka.
4 MAHAR LOKA : This is situated 20,000,000 yojanas (160,000,000 miles) below Jana Loka. This is also an abode of Rishis and sages but who are little lower in spiritual powers than compared to Jana Loka. Bhrigu Muni lives here. This is located in Inter Galactical space beyond the pivotal point for the turning of Universe. The life span of this Loka and people living in here are 4,300,000,000 solar years. At the time of dissolution, they transform themselves to Sathya Loka.
5 SVAR LOKA - This is what we often call as Swarga Loka and everybody knows at least a little about this. It is where Indra and the Demi-Gods (Devas) live. Apsaras like Ramba, Menaka, Urvasi also live here. The capital of this Loka is Amaravathi. They have the wish fulfilling tree (Karpaga Tree) and cow (Kamadhenu) etc to live their life blissfully here. But not thorough bliss. They also need to fight with Asuras often who try to take control of the Devas and conquer their world. This Loka is the one we call as Heaven where virtuous beings go after death to get their good deeds rewarded. This is in the milky way galaxy beyond Saptarishi Mandala and Pole Star (Dhuruva). This Loka will also be destroyed at the end of every pralaya (one day of Brahma). But till that time Devas also undergo rebirth. If they advance spiritually they go to higher levels or if they indulge only in material pleasures then they go to lower levels and also born as humans. Many stories that we have heard about "Sabham - Curse" often tell that such devas have become humans, animals and also beasts.
6 BHUVAR LOKA : This is the place which corresponds to our own Solar System and hence include the Sun, Moon, Stars and Planets in our solar system and also include Saptarishi Mandala (Ursa Major Constellation) and Dhuruvaloka (Polaris, the pole star). Semi-divine beings including Sidhas, Charanas and Vidhyadharas live here. When they advance in their spiritual levels they go to the next highest Loka that is Svar Loka. Bhuvar Loka also includes the sky called "Antariksh" which is considered as the lowest of the higher Lokas but immediately about the realm of earth. And this place is considered to be the abode of Yakshas, Rakshashas, Ghosts and other etheral beings. Since this is the Loka which is immediately above Bhu Loka (Earth), we consider these planets, sun, moon and stars influence human life in some way and thus they constitute the major part of "Astrology".
7 BHU LOKA : This we all know. This is planet Earth, home for humans and other species like insects and animals. Since we all live here it does not need much explanation. So let us move to the lower planetary systems (Adho Lokas).
8 ATALA LOKA : Basically the lower lokas start 70000 yojanas (560000 miles) below Earth. These are also known as Bila-Swarga because they indulge in extreme material pleasure, very much more even that of Devas. This is because they have very little or zero sense of spiritualism. Hence these are considered as dark planets where the rays of sun cannot even reach. Hence they are artificially lit by means of gems and jewels and they have no day and night. Atala Loka is the first among the lower lokas. It is ruled by the son of Maya called Bala who has mystical powers.
9 VITALA LOKA : Vitala is ruled by Hara bhava - a form of Shiva along with Bhavani. (We should not take this as Lord Shiva as such but only an "Amsam" or a "different form" of him.
10 SUTALA LOKA : This is the kingdom of Mahabali who is the main character in Vamana Avatar story. After he surrendered to God, he got many riches and was made the king of this Loka. He also has the boon to become the eighth "Indra" (current Indra is "Puranthara" ) in the next manvanthra (eighth) which is going to be preceded by "Savarni Manu".
11 TALATALA LOKA : This is the realm of Maya. Once he created three flying cities and did many attrocities and became a night mare to Devas and Rishis. Hence they all went and complained to Lord Shiva, who then destroyed king Maya's three kingdoms in "Tripura Samhara". Then Maya surrendered to Lord Shiva and pleased by this, Shiva offered this realm to him to rule.
12 - 14. MAHATALA - PAATALA : The residents of these realms are known to be Danavas, Daithyas and Nagas. Thakshaka and Vasuki live here. Thakshaka played an important role in the epic Mahabaratha in the Kurukshethra war. Another Naga princess called Uloopi took Arjuna to Nagaloka (Paatala) and a kid called "Iraavaan" was born to them.
