    lol the part about theoretically having record collector aficionados over to your house… I feel that. I have friends over to my house fairly regularly to entertain for various reasons and I have literally never had a single person ask me if I had a certain album or if we could even listen to one.

      its funny - when I (rarely) do have people over - Like family - I usually just stream music since I have home pods all over the house and an AirPort Express on my stereo. It's just easier and if people are in other rooms of the house they can still hear the music.

      I've had friends go through my collection and ask if I have certain albums. This also happens in the record store with people I meet. People just like to see how deep of a collector you are or put you onto new music.

I also keep my records in a record box and I'm extremely guilty of over stuffing it. And I've only bought multiple copies of a couple records. I started watching @vanneistat - great channel btw - and in running/working in an art studio he says, "never use the last of something unless its an emergency..." - and that really stuck with me so now whenever I am low (and I have some cash) I will stock up. The inner sleeves are the best value at 500 for $75. that is cheapest/best quality I have found. The outer sleeves I get in packs of 100 - but they fluctuate in price - it's annoying.

    Leaving the gear on: I'm not trying to just be "Internet argumentative" here, but if it's not a tube, it's meant to be left on. It's especially important and helpful for power supplies, but the rest of the components won't bat an eye. Years of being in amateur radio (which is very akin to HiFi) has taught me this _and_ most HiFi manufactures I've encountered actually recommend that you just leave the solid state gear on all the time. Sutherland, Schiitt, Pass Labs, Rega, and I could run a list as long as my leg. Anthem actually has a standby system that keeps the power supply charged and puts the rest of the amp on standby and it works well. I enjoy the channel!

    Gear that is left on will definitely not melt cables or wires. If anything, it just makes your capacitors age at a faster speed, eventually leading to noise or the power supply could die. There are good arguments about leaving gear on because the surge of power can cause fatigue in electronics. This is why some recording studios leave gear on 24/7. It just sucks when you get the electricity bill.

    I practice good record habits all the time! If a album goes out of print, just keep your drawers on, they'll get released again! The metal parts that make the album last 10 times as long as they used to! Back In tha day they sold "tens of thousands" or sometimes "hundreds of thousand" , the "father" (master) wore out before the year was out! Nowadays it'll be 10 years or more at the pace they press them today! So be patient, the licensing will come back around!😊

    I took my Vinyl out of the storage closet in 2020 after having them put away for nearly 30 years. I bought Kallax last year, re-sleeved everything in and out and added to Discogs. I still buy Vinyl and am guilty of Not playing it. It is habit I enjoy from my youth when my older brother and I would compete for getting vinyl. I am now grappling with selling it all to save family with having to deal with it if I kick the bucket while still owning them. Something I never thought about until my Brother passed away in 2022. Since I was a teenager no person has been allowed to handle my Vinyl. Even when I moved, Vinyl and stereo were transported in separate vehicle by myself. My Marantz Amp and Turntable is from Circa 1980 and Since I have owned them I keep them covered from dust when not in use. Haven't bought new vinyl for decades but new records? Are they still sold with paper innersleeves? Paperparticles and grease/oil are a deadly combination with records. Read an article in an audio-magazine about cleaning records,it must have been 40 years ago, they mentioned the residu that remained in the groove after pressing, thought it was oil or grease used to release the record but someone told me it was grease or oil from the inside appearing on the surface the moment the record was pressed. Don't think it is a thick layer but over the years that once liquid layer becomes a more or less vast layer adding unwanted noise to the record.
    By the way, i cleaned my records with a throw away sponge first followed by a treatment in the knosti using washingmachine detergent (wool) and after that used a showerbrush to clean it with tapwater. Most water dripps of the record. Next step dried it with soft toiletpaper while record is laying on a newspaper followed by the last step... the use of an anti-static recordcleaner and the endresult is ok.

    I hope this comment doesn't make me fall into your last Bad Habit - I am not trying to Yuk your Yum.
    However I think portraying leaving gear on as a bad habit sees you fall into your own trap of Yukking someone else's Yum.
    I agree with tube gear it is best not to leave on because of tube life and greater potential for nasty surprises (I have had quite a few power tubes put on pretty light shows as they fail). Also class A power amps draw a lot of power and could be expensive to leave on. However with other kit it is far from a clear cut answer that you should turn the gear off. Some manufacturers recommend leaving gear on.
    I think this is one where both options are valid and stating one or the other is a bad habit is definitely pushing your view on others (i.e. Yukking their Yum).

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  2 місяці тому

      I put it here because I have a tube amp. And even my solid state headphone amp gets hot if you leave it on. I wouldn’t classify this as yuking someone’s yum - if the directions say leave it on - leave it on. But if it gets hot def turn it off.

    • @PiecesofVinyl
      @PiecesofVinyl  Місяць тому +1

      I think I get your question - you are asking to put the record outside the jacket - but in the outersleeve - while also in the inner sleeve- and the answer is YES - do this. I do this for all my records. The main reason is - it makes it easier to get to the vinyl to listen to it! I dont have to pull out the jacket and remove the record - just slide out the vinyl from the back - also - they make outer sleeves with an extra pocket for this type of storage if you want to go that route also.

  • @seano218
    @seano218 2 місяці тому

    That's not true about leaving your gear on if you listen multiple times a week... as long as it's not a tube/valve amp of any sort. What actually kills the life of your gear is constantly turning it on and off causing more wear on the gear due to the power surge at the beginning and the switch usage. Most audio gear can handle being left on, it's ok as long as your using it on a regular basis. If you go a week or more of non-use, then turn it off. Also, a good surge protector helps too. Solid state gear, ok. Tube gear, not ok.

    • @PiecesofVinyl

      I have a Zen Can Signature head phone amp that I ALWAYS forget to turn off - and my phono sits on top of it - you can see it in the videos - I left that on once over night and into the next day - and when I went to spin again - my phono stage on top was was warm to the touch...it seems to be fine - but it can't be good to have electronics staying hot like that. At the very least its a drain on your electric bills!

    • @seano218
      @seano218 2 місяці тому

      @PiecesofVinyl your electronics are designed to take it, hence why your system sounds better after 10-15 minutes of warm up. The electricity bill is real however, but if you leave them on, it won't damage them. Paul McGowan even has a video about the subject as well from PS Audio.

      What really pisses me off is when they put hype stickers ON the shrinkwrap. • @JESSEJBaldwin
      @JESSEJBaldwin 2 місяці тому

      @@JackMcSomeoneyou can remove them from the shrink wrap, you just need a small sharp pocket knife and then you can get the stickers to start peeling off with the knife so you don’t damage it with your fingers, and once it’s up enough to get a finger under it then use you fingers and peel it off and you can feel it and tell wether it feels like it will rip, if it feels like that use some hot breath or a hair dryer on low temp just briefly to help loosen it up. I have gotten every sticker off successfully only twice have they left their sticky on and then I use adhesive to re stick it onto the new sleeve I put them on.

BTW, never met ONE person who does that. If anything, I'm annoyed at these repetitive videos saying the same things, treating the music listening experience like a chore with these laundry lists of Do's and Don'ts. Same thing goes for things like gear and stilus. You know how many times I've accidentally dropped my stylus on the side of the platter without any damage? Many times. You sound like someone who spends more time organizing your records rather than listening to them.
