"We want things to die, and we also want to learn."
Spoken like a true Witherbloom.
@@obadijahparks Nah man, Witherbloom is pure Golgari, the darker side of Hufflepuff with a devious touch of Slitherin... As Dreadshot01 zes: "We want things to [grow, just so we can kill them, so when they] die, ... we always want to learn." >8=
May want to add vito to the deck?
Golgari!
@@obadijahparks Silverquill is much closer to Slytherin than Witherbloom... Close enough that Daddy Hasbro better have good Lawyers.
@@qwormuli77 yeah some dark magic elitist faculty always the same as slytherin.
26:23 That's a bug. (As opposed to a Pest.) Quoth the release notes:
If Containment Breach resolves, and the target artifact or enchantment has a mana value of 2 or less, but it wasn't destroyed (perhaps because it has indestructible), you will still create a Pest.
A bug that prevents bugs
CGB during spoilers: "All these cards are terrible!"
CGB playing the cards: "Mind blowing!"
What an emotional journey.
Top 10 anime redemption arcs.
I tend not to listen to anyone during spoilers. Best decision to make during that peroid.
Yeah, it seems during the Arena Craft podcast they only evaluated the cards independantly from each other and in the context of the current meta. But they didn't really go deep enough and look for synergies and combos. So obviously everything looked weak.
@@alexandrem798 This 100%. They were evaluating every card only in context of the meta at the time. I did not agree with a lot of their opinions
yeah, some cards are good in a vaccum, but this set has alot of synergies with other cards, but when taken apart, don't seems so great
CGB: Spends 2 weeks saying Strixhaven sucks.
Also CGB: Laughs maniacally as he crushes his enemies with insanely powerful/fun Strixhaven cards.
I think a lot of things suck compared to Eldraine. I honestly thought a lot of the new cards were powerful and ridiculous when I saw spoilers! So glad we're already seeing fun stuff with it.
@@celebrim1 it’s actually surprisingly competitive. I made a couple tweaks by adding onx Liliana, the squirrel and the two drop life drain dude. Cut lovestruck and a couple other things.
@@kevinkirk9189 i play a rakdos deck that's copied from aetherhub and isn't even top 10 in the meta aaand on top of that I'm missing 4 cards due to not having enough wildcards and I eat the witherbloom decks for breakfast
@@wernerbeinhart2320 yes you are correct. It gets wrecked by control decks....I burnt the deck!
@@celebrim1 I think people are still learning the lines for this as well. It makes sense that they only really plan on the jank side of things. It's good that people are playing this in the ladder, helps develop the play. I'm yet to take it there. Soon.
A plump is a tool, a weight on a string, used to find the vertical axis of something. Sort of like a level, but from before bubble levels were a thing. Plumbing something has associations with measuring it, or sometimes examining it. So plumb the forbidden is kind of like exploring/measuring the forbidden. It's also often associated with pools, oceans, etc, as in plumbing the depths.
So what you're saying is a "plumbers crack" means something verrry different...? 😐
@@twoinone_ So the word plumber, actually comes from the same root as the word plumb: the latin Plumbus, meaning lead. Plumbs often used lead as their weight, before we realized how harmful lead was. And romans used lead to make their pipes, which is how we get the word plumber.
Bruh, he was joking.
@@Mastertoa3 Thanks that was very helpful and insightful, I knew of the tool didn't know about the connection between lead and plumber good trivia knowledge!
Still waiting for art of a golgari toilet with a wizard hesitant about using his magic plunger.
Plumb: Verb: to examine minutely and critically
Plum: Noun: A fruit you eat
Thank you, was going to post the same general thing.
Also plumb as in you plumb a sink or drain.
Plumb in this context is like when you are using a level to get something 90 degrees "plumb the forbidden is basically "laying" down your creatures flat(kill them) "plumb" and get some nice effects
This is the exact kinda deck I’ve been looking to play for awhile. This aristocrats burn witherbloom nonsense just looks like pure fun. Thanks for the jumping off point CGB
that victory pose after the rogues win, so wholesome, you could say it was... grossly incandescent
Nice.
That combo was some joly cooperation
It's so wholesome seeing CGB having this much fun with the new cards after his disappointment during spoiler season. I'm glad he is enjoying it!
This is why trying to make value judgements about a set beforehand is a mistake. You can't tell what's going to be good or fun until you put it into practice. Especially since spoiler season is filled with content creators only considering new cards within the context of existing cards, not within context of the larger set being released.
Like, CGB was sure that Magecraft's clause about copying spells wasn't going to be relevant. It glosses over the fact that if a new mechanic is central to a set, it says a lot about how much that set will build _around_ that mechanic. _Of course_ Strixhaven was going to have a bunch of copying cards added to it. Examining Magecraft's value only from the existing card pool misses this. WotC does not put out sets that, at least on paper, do not synergize with themselves.
@@Bluecho4 While I agree that thinking your understanding of a spoiler season is going to be correct is a mistake, I don't think trying is. It helps you improve as a player as you have to think critically about what cards are good or not and what synergies they have (improving your deckbuilding skills) and the process is fun. Plus, it is impossible for someone who is invested in the game not to form some expectations off a spoiler season, even if it is subconscious. You just have to be aware that you might be completely wrong.
bro! i just played this and DESTROYED mono red! (a deck i hate with a burning passion) thanks for the decklist! i always come to you for new set deck ideas and you never disappoint!
I gotta admit, the new set didn’t impress me as far as rare and mythic rare cards go...but the uncommon spells might make up for it
I think this set is a great theme with a lot of jank cards that said, I think there are a lot of cards which are underrated purely because in of themselves, they are a bit lowkey.
@@cutscenecinema9973 this set didn’t really affect the meta. There aren’t any cards or combos in the set that are good enough to substitute for the already-broken cards in previous sets like eldraine and theros
@@andresingles957 I'm hesitant to agree with you as its early days. I'm seeing a lot of Witherbloom sacrifice out of the gate (which looks strong). But yeah, Rakdos Midrange, Sultai Ultimatum, Dimir Rogues... most of these are unchanged, save for maybe one or two cards. I've seen some strong White Aggro using some of the new cards but whether they are any better than what we've already encountered remains to be seen. Tribal Spirits is now looking good but like you say, whether they are actually metachanging is another matter.
This is the new version of my Orzhov Kill Everything deck, which became Abzan for some ramp at one stage. Ah, add Vito in, and every life you gain becomes another drain. I love this kind of trigger deck.
Thank you...knew this deck was missing something.
What would you replace vito with?
Eye is one of the oldest creature types! If you're a boomer like me you remember cards like, "Evil Eye of Orms-by-Gore" and who could forget, "Evil Eye of Urborg?"

You had me
@@celebrim1 nahh ... tibalts trickery is ultterly junk, it cant be tier 1...
52:30, the whole time he is looking through the learn board looking for another way to have a creature die, I'm just chanting, "As an additional cost sacrifice a creature"
I shouted at the screen at that point haha
As an additional cost exile
Oh wow, it is exile in order to exile. Yikes, my bad
Plumb is like a 2-mana Ad Nauseum impersonator in this deck, so cool.
Im a simple man, i see cgb playing the new decks from strixhaven and i smash the like button
Literally, same😂

Just wanted to say thanks for the recent shout outs for those of us that are watching and liking. Keep chugging man, great content!
This version of the deck makes a lot of sense, I think you have perfected what many people have been testing. Good job! ;)
It is refreshing to see something that hasn’t been around in a while. Also... only 4 Eldraine cards ;)
That's why it's hard to compete with 4 eldraine cards 😂🤣😂
LOVE the info like you offered about the Snarls (dual lands)!!! Those are the kind of questions I'm very often thinking about as a free to play, and probably moreso if i were spending honestly.
Great job and thanks again for all you do
CGB: "I didn't know "eye" could be a creature type"
Evil Eye of Orms-by-Gore: "Am I a joke to you?"
_Almost_ new
@@nomenestomen3452 nope, it’s eye again
After a week of struggling to make a witherbloom deck that felt consistent, I tested out a modified version of yours and it seems much better than what I had before. I also love how when using Village Rites or Plumb you can get in the sacrifice effect and trigger Witherbloom apprentice/the witch/Bastion before control decks have a chance to counter the actual spell!
I've never felt more giddy to try a deck out than hearing the explanation for how the deck works
Yea, I only got a couple of minutes into the video before I paused it and went and built the deck myself. It's pretty ridiculous when it works, but struggles against the mass distruption from rogues and ultimatum for sure.
your reaction to the rogues win at the end sold me on crafting it!
Thanks for featuring this deck. This combo ate my lunch last night, and I was like, "What the...?" I was about to reverse-engineer it today, but once again CGB is right on time.
Nice! I am proud to say I figured out that three card combo deck building yesterday as well.
I also mix in white to play leonin lightscribe and some of the new orzhov removals. It’s hilarious to swing with a bunch of huge pests lol
So awesome to see CGB happily crushing all the meta decks with something cool like this deck!!!!
Wow this deck is really cool. The synergies are surprisingly consistent. When I play rakdos sac, there are way too many times I'm sitting with a sac outlet and no value to get from it or the other way around. This deck seems like each and every card is synergistic. Very fun.
For real, thank you for being one of the few bigger content creators who are actually covering standard right now. It feels like most people are just caught up on historic or limited "pukes" besides you and crokeyz.
Jim Davis has posted some standard brews, as well.
Excellent deck, very fun to see new deck tech and the possibilities. You are always a good host!
This has literally been my favorite deck for a year or more . Your right it is the most rewarding for that feeling
Powerful and fun deck! I tweaked a little bit this list and I love it with Ayara for more drain 🖤
I took a break from mtg right after Amonkhet and the launch of MTGA, and am just now coming back. Given that I haven't completed the pathways/snarls, this deck has carried me to Plat (so far) at an 80% Winrate in standard Ranked. Plus, this deck totally fits my playstyle of broken combos. So just wanted to say a huge thanks for sharing this deck!
fun! I really like Dina, Soul Steeper in here to really push the extra drain!
So do I! I swapped 2 Beasts and 1 Lisette against 3 Dinas, now it works like a charm with Bastion on the field and Plum kickin' in.^^
This deck reminds me a lot of a semi aggro semi sac rakdos deck I played for a while. Uses immastrum predator, the bastion and woe strider with a bunch of cheap creatures. Will totally try it out
You mention this at 41:50 and you CAN order the triggers to optimize the play. When you cast plumb and sac all your tokens, the death triggers and token triggers all go on the stack. Order the triggers such that you get your tokens first, then death triggers to get your +1/+1 anthem triggers. You still made a sweet play regardless!
That win against Rogues was epic. Well played.
That rouge deck just was to standard, that’s when you play lurrus as companion instead of multicopy and simply more cards plus to less removal. Rankle also can make the different or using tergrid , fae of wishes , brazen burrower. For me this deck is ok but aren’t op and also lacks of additional ideas as example scute swarm or nectarpot.
This is possibly the earliest I’ve been to a cgb video ever
This is puzzling because several of these cards look like jank. Then they start to synergize, and it just makes me so happy to see jank beat Rogues! Also really impressed by the variety of win cons in this deck.
This is the combo I mentioned during your twitch stream, but probably missed my comment. Didn't miss the one I said to relax when some dork made some silly comment. Cheers! (o:
Looks really fun. Thanks for another interesting pile to pilot!!
First deck I tried out when this released, I like having Dina, Soul Steeper in the deck for pings whenever those pests die and you can spend extra mana to have the sac outlet with her.
Also imagine this with Blood Artist in historic.
I built one of these decks my self and love this achetype best. Love to try out cgbs version
Cascade getting around counter is also nice. Also "eye" being a creature type saved me earlier when someone cast the mutate bat. I was able to crippling fear while naming eye (keeping my eye twitch up.)
@52:36 I was screaming to pick necrotic fumes. Nice deck good games, that just almost gave me a heart attack.
That explains why I just played against this deck while I was playing a much jankier pest deck. I lost
@CovertGoBlue I like this deck. My changes where dump the companion, dumped the 4xDean, 23 Land instead of 24 (Re: no Dean so no 4drops) ... Added 2x Dina, Soul Steeper & 3x Fiend Artisan (for combo fetch / big boi at times)... So more Combo focus on the gain/loss life. Land Wise swaped 1 swamp and 2 forest for 2x Castle Lochwain for a lil card draw
Finally some new types of decks.
Amazing :)
This deck reminds me of the concept of "Doomed if you , doomed if you don't!" Cool ! I love it :P !
3:13 "[to] plumb" = verb
1. measure (the depth of a body of water). 2. test (an upright surface) to determine the vertical.
basically lord voldemorts research :D
Definitely gonna have some fun with this. Only needed like three rare wildcards to build it after opening my packs
I like the Witherbloom flavor. Sickening swarms and parasites. Golgari rarely got that theme as well. Probably also a great synergy with Zombie revival cards.
So much more interactive and fun than the Dina/Vito version I was running. The inclusion of Lovestruck is pretty nifty.
would love to see you try a version with Bayou Groff, maybe Egon, Beast, Tend and the Great Henge. kind of like an aggro/midrange variant with lots of targets for Tend to hit
Cmon, lets get this video to finally overtake mono red as cgb's most watched video
This is awesome. It took a while for it to work but when it does...DAYUM! Unfortunately dont have Sedgemoor Which, but did have Dina soul Steeper and Beledros Whitherbloom. Very nice.
Fun fact there are only 3 other eye creatures and one is from an un-set. And the other 2 are in timespiral
I bet there will be more Eyes in the new D&D set. Beholders are an iconic D&D creature.
I have been playing this in platinum and it is dominating. Glad to see green and black doing something outside of sultai!
Loving the archetype. Been playing around with some builds before picking up this list. And i am officially 4-30 with it. Haha
I really like this deck ty or being you and streaming magic!!!
Insane! Loved it
Just built this deck.
Seems that sedgemoor witch is vital to quickly ramping, otherwise can seem a bit slow.
Edit: the wins are super satisfying !!
Edit 2: 7 hours later -- added Vito / Grasp of Darkness / Cram Session x 2 / Broken Wings x 2
took out 1 Village rights / 1 Bastion of Remembrance and all 4 of the green creature with the adventure. Pretty fun deck.
Did you just add Vito or did you replace it?
Currently modifying the deck for when it comes out... very happy to see this
Really love this deck. I miss Golgari clover knights and this kind of fills the combo lifegain/drain void.
This deck is amazing, easily my favorite deck in a long time
Beats Rogues! Also gotta throw in the plumb vs. plum comment. I have always loved Rakdos sacrifice, this looks like it’ll be right up my alley.
Thanks man, keep up the great work!! CKC
And the first match I played with this deck was a mirror. Excellent.
I would love to see a breakdown of the choice of apprentice over dina. Seems a bit more flexible except for being legendary. She is a sac outlet in a pinch, doubles bastion damage, doesn't die to stomp and still combos with plumbed pests/bastion.
YAY your playing my favourite card from the set ! Sedgemoor Witch
I think this might be one of my fav new decks
At 53:00 you had lethal if you necrotic fumes your own pest, and you get two bastion triggers! GG
Would love this to happen but Bastion wouldn't trigger in that case because it requests a creature dying whereas Necrotic Fumes exiles creatures. ;)
I've been trying to get my Witherbloom deck working for ages - This is great
in the vein of deleting Eldraine lol, I replaced the lovestruck beasts for prosperous innkeeper, his trigger life gain hastens the burn combo but also gives you a free treasure mana to pull off a faster combo in a pinch. You can also trigger the combo in reverse and gain as much life as you would burn if you didn't have bastion or Dina
I like running 3 innkeepers and random card like Beledos or a witherbloom pledgemage
At first I was underwhelmed by the cards revealed from Strixhaven, but seeing them in play I gotta say, as a control mage, this set looks pretty scary
As a PURE control mage I am literally eating this set alive .
@@averagetoelite856 what deck are you using? I just feel like the ward and learn mechanics make things a lot harder for removal and counter tribals, but then again I haven't played that much lately, so I don't know
The deck looks like a lot of fun. I was just curious if you considered Dina. With all the incidental life gain it seems she would speed the burn and give you another sac outlet
Fun fact a plumb is a tool used to measure if something is level usually suspended from a fixed point via a sting or cord. Plum is the fruit you eat. Either way i learned something today
Looks like a deck you need to spend alot of time playing to master the plays, like the new Blue/Red combo deck. I love these types of decks and this version is so tightly put together.
I already played against a few versions of this deck and it is cool deck and I wanna try it myself, but it did'nt blew me away... yet.
20:46 it actually was the play to village rites a pest, one because the death trigger would gain life and two because then the apparition would have had the exiled card, meaning you would have gotten a 3/3 upon destroying it
After in love of a inn-keeper, a bunch of burning bush and all other weird stuff, the lovestruck beast is now in favor of the pests
Been playing witherbloom up to Gold Tier1. Its been amazing sacrificing pests to Plumb the Forbidden with a Witherbloom Apprentice and Dina on the field. Its bonkers
I think 1 enviromental science is great in any learn deck board. Cool deck and great video as always!
I remember the Elven Archer from M19... that one would be sick in this matchup.
The one with whenever a creature dies (ANY!!!) an opponentn looses 1 life. :D
Going to try this with a brawl deck with Beledros Witherbloom as my commander and I'll probably throw a Vorinclex with some +1/+1 spells in there for good measure.
It's fun. It's new. And it actually uses a very significant number of new cards rather than just 1 or 2 in addition to new mechanics. I hope this deck gets refined and stays as a T1/T2 meta deck post-rotation.
Usually I'm into blue mana mix, but this is very cool!🙌
Im going to be addicted to trying different variations of this deck. I tried with the new witherbloom card when you gain life ot gets a 1/1 counter and off of 1 plump its fun to watch the health totals swing 16 points and get like 4 counters on a creature
Damn, that's a nice deck!
The 4 mana 11 power demon is good if you can play the GB instant that sacrifices a creature and you create x pests where x is the sacrificed creatures power. It's been getting me a few instascoops.
Thanks for the deck idea
Awesome deck!
I have a copy of Professor Onyx, wondering if it's too greedy to add into this deck, and what can I swap out for it? Thanks!
also any point in puting like 2 dramatic finales in this one? like alternative win con as this deck has a lot of tokens
With the announcement of an upcoming Dungeons and Dragons themed set I think the "Eye" creature type foretells the coming of Beholder tribal.
If you don’t have love-struck beast; a VERY good replacement is a play set of Blex, Vexing pest. Not only can they give your pests a good anthem effect if you’ve a good board state, but they’ll also pop off your mage craft abilities if you have a witch or apprentice out and need some more cards in hand
A Sack deck without woe strider *head explodes*. I'd be awfully tempted to add some vitos to this somehow go the usual 61 cards as cheeky one of at least
It's not worth it. You lose so much synergy
I spent all my card tokens to make this deck. I could Afford the last 3 love struck beast so I improvised but I love it I lose sometimes but amazingly fun deck. Thanks bro
It's nice to see some new kids on the block
damn we are going to see a lot of this stuff soon ^^
