I just took a 22hr 1,500 mile road trip in my 23 brz and it was surprisingly comfortable and nice. My 11' MB s550 V8 runs at about 193ish F. At sea level in FL. 240f sounds dangerously high? Also why does this engine get so low mpg? Small 4 banger I would have thought will kill my V8 in terms of gas consumption. I get 23.

Gas is a significant expense, but fun comes at a price - I fill up with premium and don’t give it a second thought. Haven’t reset my trip odometer for about 3 months and showing 30.1 mpg since I’ve had a couple of 80-200 mile trips to take with it. Absolutely love it (and an ND2 Miata is my second car)
After owning my Mazda 3 for a year I can say I truly did love the car and its many many positives like MPG, color, style etc .. I just couldn't get over the lack of sportiness and seeing that the turbo model was pricier than a base GR86 I made the easy switch and sure I've got less room but every drive in my GR brings me close to tears lol
I’m 5’6” and pretty skinny this car is ridiculously comfortable if you’re short and skinny. The buckets are perfect sized and the interior space for me feels like just enough. I’ve hauled 2x4s in it as well.
I have a 2022 GR86 Premium with auto (bad left leg) and a 2010 VW Golf. The GR86 is both my daily driver and my track car. I've added a Tomei oil baffle pan. a wing, 20 mm spacers, oil pressure gauge, and camber bolts. Total cast under $40K. Seats are great, nicely snug and comfortable. Lots of trunk room for my walker and any other stuff I need. Came with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires which lasted 20K miles, lots of track time. I get 30.2 mpg driving mostly on the twisty back roads using Sport mode with the paddle shifters running between 3 to 5 K rpm. I always have a big smile on my face when I come back from a drive. It's as much fun as a Porsche 911 except it doesn't have the 911's horrendous maintenance costs.
I own a 23 GR86. It’s my only car. I daily it to work and when picking up food and stuff from Walmart. This car is surprisingly doable for daily. IF. It’s a big if. I saw in other videos that the second seat row is very, very tight, but you can tilt it down very easily and then you get a fairly big trunk, good for longer holidays.

The twins are amazing sports cars! They should be flying off of lots. I’m an older enthusiast who is in driving heaven in my 22 BRZ. I lived out of an NA Miata so this has tons of room. Fits more groceries than my wife’s Renegade just more difficult to put in and take out. Compared to lightweight affordable sports cars the BRZ has very comfortable ride (for what it is). It’s a blue collar Porsche. It’s my daily and if anything happens I’m buying another the 1st time I’ve said that. Only look elsewhere if your straight line drag car driver or maybe if you have access to a track in which a Supra might be faster choice.
This car look's very good ! And if you wanted this car In France (no longer available), It was ~35k€ + 60k€ of pollution taxes so the car cost x3 the original price (that's why Toyota stopped it in France...)
If I didn't have a dog, I would have one of these as a daily driver. Seems like a good compromise between sporty and practical, love the red colour too.
This car is on the g4 impreza platform so its quite spacious for what it is. I lived with an 86 for a few years as my only car and never ran into a problem. Im 6,4 and fit better than my chevy ss/holden v6 and i had heaps of room for anything i needed with the option to put the seats down if i had more stuff than the boot could handle.
Kyra (or Kira, maybe? Sorry if I guessed wrong on the spelling) is a little too close to the steering wheel and airbag for comfort. 😬 She fits, but something with adjustable pedals might be safer.
Premium fuel is not "recommended" it is required. The question of is it a good daily driver is not the question to ask. It is nowhere near as good as a Mazda3 or any other sedan or small SUV. If all you want is a daily driver, look elsewhere. The question should be if your top priority is a lightweight sports car that is bearable as a daily driver. The answer could be yes depending on your tolerance for the concessions that need to be made when buying a lightweight sports car. Another question could be is the GR86/BRZ the best lightweight sports car to be used as a daily driver. The answer is yes. It beats all options for practicality/performance. I drive a Mazda3 as my daily driver and a manual BRZ as my fun car because I can have two cars.
I daily a MK5 Supra, manual transmission, drive it to school and back, use it to have fun. Nice trunk space and gas is alright cause I live on a little island in the pacific
The petite lady at 4’11 is sitting very close to the steering wheel. If or when the air bags deploys, it’s going to be right in her face. Which perhaps could be dangerous in certain situations and really loud since her ears will be so close to the bag.
I truly do believe the GR 86 is one of the greatest sports cars ever made. It is like a Porsche Cayman (Which is perfection) with the added benefit of looking arguably better, but importantly of being AFFORDABLE. This is car equivalent to the love of my life. And this GR 86 and a Mazda 3 are a WONDEFUL combo.
I almost pulled the trigger on one of these back in 2017. Loved the handling and styling, did not love the engine or the interior. But I found a near ideal Cayman S for $35k, and that choice was easy. I still smile when I see these on the road.
As a former 86 owner I can say...yes and no. As for the good: it is decently practical for a sports car. The trunk is large enough for grocery hauls and road trips. The back seat, while useless for people (who aren't children), offers additional storage. Fuel economy is good for a sports car, too. In terms of roominess and comfort: its better than a Miata, Z3, or a Mk5 Supra. Also it is an ABSOLUTE JOY to drive. As for the bad: its "tall" person friendly, but it isn't TALL person friendly. If you're 6'4" or under you'll have no problems on shorter drives but it will become extremely painful and uncomfortable for anything longer than a 30 minute drive. If you're *properly* tall (over 6'4") then don't buy into the idea that this is a "tall person's Miata." Its friendlier for tall people than a Miata, sure, but honestly *not by much.* I eventually had to sell mine due to these issues (although I still miss driving it.) Beyond that, my only other complaints are some minor (but persistent) rattling and a real lack of sound deadening (rain will clatter loudly when its wet outside.) If you're too short to play in the NBA, and don't mind some rattles, noisiness, and poor sound insulation, I can't think of a better sports car daily dollar-for-dollar. If you're properly TALL, get something like a Challenger instead, or a Porsche if you can afford one.
I think all coupes should consider the 5'8 to 6'2 as a "standard height" when they are designing future cars, I mean, tall people are a nightmare to fit on coupes sport cars
lol I think you got ripped off 😂 I drive over 85 all the time and I’m still under warranty 😂 you still got time to delete this before more people see your bad information 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It was down to the GR86 or the GR Corolla for me (I know, two different types of car), but I ultimately went with the GRC for the extra doors for daily use. If I had room for a second car I would have had a Prius for my daily commuter and a GR86 for the weekends though
i want a mazda 3 hatch soooooo badly... but i decided to be smart with my money and i bought an 05 Lexus ES330 with 100k miles for 6k instead... great car but man I wish i owned that mazda.
4:37 look me in my eye and tell me that brothers knees wouldn't be toast after 2 bumps and 5 minutes of drive time smashed against that dash like that...
I spent the last three years using its predecessor, the GT86, for three YEARS. Is it a good daily driver? Dude, I live in Europe, where we actually NEED TO TO DRIVE CARS. The answer is a simple YES. Fuel economy? It's a JAPAPNESE CAR. NOT SOME AMERICAN FUEL BURNER. You guys over there don't even know what that means. Grow up!
I came close, close to buying one not as a daily but as a weekend toy .....But instead I went with the 2024 WRX. The lack of space and the ability to still get my kids to hockey practice with gear and trips to the cottage with my weekend fun toy was the kicker on top of the AWD and substantially far more power.
@@MuseumStandard bro, google made an adaptation that when you listen to music that the navigation system automatically speaks over the music. So the app seems kinda useless too me. Greetings from europe!
As a daily driver GPS is a pretty big deal. I guess it depends on how large and complex the road network in your city is. I live in Sydney and it is already stressful enough driving to a place you've never been to before with GPS on the screen, can't imagine doing it without. And Australian laws are weird. When you first get your license you only get a provisional licence (known as P plate). You have to wait 3 years until you get a full license. When you are on your P plates you are not allowed to drive cars over a certain power to weight ratio. The first gen 86 and BRZ were one of the few new performance cars that were legal for a P platers to drive. BUT when you are on your P plates it is illegal to use your phone for navigation even if you have your phone mounted to your dash or windscreen. But there are work arounds. You can just fit an after market head unit that has Android auto or carplay and get rid of the factory one, or you can mount a dedicated GPS device to your dash or windscreen, so really the 86 not having android auto or carplay isn't really a big deal, just a bit annoying.
I wanted one for my midlife crisis. When I saw how low they are I decided to get a MINI Cooper instead. Next time show an old/er man with a bit of a beer belly to see if he can get in and out the thing.
It’s a shame this didn’t come in AWD like what Audi did with the Audi TT back in the 2000s I’d love to have this car but the RWD is a deal breaker because of the snows that are in my area annually
Every time I see a review of one of these I think how much better it would be to live with if it had a lift back (hatch?). Also, as a dad of tween age boys, I wonder how 4' 11" would fit in the back seat.
I wanted to buy this but I’m gonna go Civic Si instead as this car wouldn’t work for me, I need a backseat with actual legroom and I need something that can handle inclement weather (meaning no RWD), the GR86 is amazing but I highly recomend the Civic Si for those who want something better suited as a daily driver, I’ll be buying my Civic Si towards the end of next year as I’m still saving and I need to be 18 to put the car in my name
@@BitcoinTo150K thank you for the advice but I know what I’m doing, I’d def consider an 8th gen Civic Si for a project car if I have time/space in college (probably unlikely but who knows)
@@BitcoinTo150K I considered the Elantra N but it’s not reliable so I don’t want it, ik the 1.5T motor in Honda products had issues but the newer ones are fine
@CarGeek360 gotcha yeah that 1.5 is weaksauce dont mod it or you'll snap a rod and clutch need be replaced asap. Speaking of Elantra N throttle house extra just posted it lol. New one runs same times as Nismo Z and Type R what a car I had blast with one for a weekend
Remind me again why would you drop a whopping 40k on this thing while you can get crossovers and suvs as fast and at the same price, with way more room, plush, and options?
GR86 is more prone to turn-in compared to its BRZ brother which I and many other prefer, also where I live BRZs are overpriced compared to GR86's so that's subjective I guess lol .. Not to mention Toyota gives you a high performance driving session and 2 years of toyota-care maintenance included with every GR purchase ❤ Subarus is a whatever brand frankly.

I can sleep comfortably in my BRZ. I removed the back seat and got bucket seats for extra room.
This car look's very good ! And if you wanted this car In France (no longer available), It was ~35k€ + 60k€ of pollution taxes so the car cost x3 the original price (that's why Toyota stopped it in France...)
You can buy a wireless adapter for Wireless Carplay and Android Auto
If I didn't have a dog, I would have one of these as a daily driver. Seems like a good compromise between sporty and practical, love the red colour too.
iam a 181cm and 110kg driving a lexus rc ,its hard in and out, but two door looks so nice
The answer is... Absolutely yes! Has been so since 2013
Track bred with red brembos looks so good.
I daily a MK5 Supra, manual transmission, drive it to school and back, use it to have fun. Nice trunk space and gas is alright cause I live on a little island in the pacific
Great Video! Maybe you can do some on your RCs as well 😎
Great vid as always zack!
The petite lady at 4’11 is sitting very close to the steering wheel. If or when the air bags deploys, it’s going to be right in her face. Which perhaps could be dangerous in certain situations and really loud since her ears will be so close to the bag.
I'd love to see you compare this to a GTI, and the Mazda 3 hatch!
I agree as older enthusiast I absolutely love the performance for price. I call my BRZ my blue collar Porsche.
Don't take any right handers abd you got yourself W. perfect nascar car.
I love mine, and it drives awesome, and the car can corner deadly
This is so good and helps a lot. Thank you so much...
If you're *properly* tall (over 6'4") then don't buy into the idea that this is a "tall person's Miata." Its friendlier for tall people than a Miata, sure, but honestly *not by much.* I eventually had to sell mine due to these issues (although I still miss driving it.) Beyond that, my only other complaints are some minor (but persistent) rattling and a real lack of sound deadening (rain will clatter loudly when its wet outside.)
If you're too short to play in the NBA, and don't mind some rattles, noisiness, and poor sound insulation, I can't think of a better sports car daily dollar-for-dollar.
If you're properly TALL, get something like a Challenger instead, or a Porsche if you can afford one.
There is a class action lawsuit against Toyota and Subaru of this engine.
What happened to the lawsuit. Are these things still broken
I'm stoked to hear that the new one is getting that turbo 3cyl.
Just hope it comes stays in Germany.
Great daily. My GT86 has all the space I need.
Daily and 1000 mile review don't belong in the same line. Drive it 20,000 miles and come back
If this car had a targa option I would definitely buy one.
I think all coupes should consider the 5'8 to 6'2 as a "standard height" when they are designing future cars, I mean, tall people are a nightmare to fit on coupes sport cars
You can't drive over 85 mph.
Why?
Your warranty will be expired.
lol I think you got ripped off 😂 I drive over 85 all the time and I’m still under warranty 😂 you still got time to delete this before more people see your bad information 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@setitup89 Search "GR corolla fire" in UA-cam. Your warranty already expired. You have the bad information.
@@setitup89 hes referring to the gr corolla that had its warranty voided
@@setitup89 ironically, you still have time to delete this too
Buy a 2025 Mazda3 Turbo premium. its better.
A fun car, but it starts at 80 grand in my country and goes up to 120k for the 3 liter version. Nuts
I forgot to ask… Did it pass the Big friggin bottle test?
4:37 look me in my eye and tell me that brothers knees wouldn't be toast after 2 bumps and 5 minutes of drive time smashed against that dash like that...
Would you recommend this as a car enthusiast first car ?
I was thinking of choosing between gr86 or civic type r. Watching this is making me doubt my decision.
Grow up!
I got my GR86 premium for 29k out the door (it doesn’t have the brembo’s tho) it is a used 2022 with 4k miles
Under 40.000? Damn. Where I live they go for 60-70.000. Why? Because car guys can't have nice things in Norway
Dude come on, what do you need apple car play and android auto for? Just connect with bluetooth and let the music rip!
navigation
It lets the music rip and you get the navigation at the same time. It's hard to go back to just bluetooth alone.
@leonardoluchici704down
for 30k the used market gets you so much more car. Also the target market of this car can't afford 30k+.
I have 11K on mine no trouble, great daily driver
5' 11.75" I i think I want this over a miata
I wanted one for my midlife crisis. When I saw how low they are I decided to get a MINI Cooper instead. Next time show an old/er man with a bit of a beer belly to see if he can get in and out the thing.
That was basically everyone in this video.
It’s a shame this didn’t come in AWD like what Audi did with the Audi TT back in the 2000s
I’d love to have this car but the RWD is a deal breaker because of the snows that are in my area annually
To be fair, you don't exactly need AWD for snow. Most of the time, it's just a good set of snow tires and the skills needed to tackle the condition.
Under 30k$ in the US... In France 100k$
Every time I see a review of one of these I think how much better it would be to live with if it had a lift back (hatch?). Also, as a dad of tween age boys, I wonder how 4' 11" would fit in the back seat.
We did try that as well off camera, she fit OK but not great.
Too young for $30k car if you making payments. Just buy 8th gen Si they way more fun more character new one is soulless
@@BitcoinTo150K thank you for the advice but I know what I’m doing, I’d def consider an 8th gen Civic Si for a project car if I have time/space in college (probably unlikely but who knows)
@CarGeek360 cool maybe drive the Si and Elantra N same day before you sign anything. It's a HUGE difference in performance almost same price
I think I’ll pick one of these up and use my 335i to go to Costco
Now The Big Question Did The Big Friggin Bottle Fit? 😂 I had to ask 😅
Eh, we just finished swapping a v8 into a clean one that had a dead motor. Great bargain. Compared to expensive brand new sports cars.
Remind me again why would you drop a whopping 40k on this thing while you can get crossovers and suvs as fast and at the same price, with way more room, plush, and options?
its actually 30k
Because it's a fun-to-drive sports car. You obviously don't get that. Why did you watch the review?
I'm having deja vu.
I also picked a 2006 Civic instead of a 2021 Type R because it was more practical and drove fine. 7:05
Cool stuff.
2 years ago they would say for just around 30000 dollars, about the gr86
most of performance/sports cars are fuel hogs, they chu fuel very fast so you have to take daily fuel budget in consideration
It's not really a Toyota. It is a Subaru BRZ with a Toyota badge and the Toyota version is more expensive then the Subaru
GR86 is more prone to turn-in compared to its BRZ brother which I and many other prefer, also where I live BRZs are overpriced compared to GR86's so that's subjective I guess lol ..
Not to mention Toyota gives you a high performance driving session and 2 years of toyota-care maintenance included with every GR purchase ❤
Subarus is a whatever brand frankly.
The interior is all Subaru. It's almost like Toyota didn't even try to make their own unique interior for this car. Badge engineering indeed.
It's a good platform for badge engineering.
If we didn't have 3 kids...I would have an 86 or BRZ instead of my WRX for sure.
