Been playing the black box golf after picking it up a few weeks back trying to find a 60 to 72 pin converter (sadly there wasn't one) for $4 I honestly enjoyed it which was weird cuz I don't normally enjoy sport titles. That's what brought me here I wanted to find more golf titles. Thanks for the upload and giving me some insite.
My dad never and I mean never plays a video game. But I got him into Nintendo GOLF game. He would get way into it! Walking up to the tv to show where to stop and where he thinks it should be haha.
2:50 NES GOLF gameplay is actually perfect. Old games didn’t hold your hand and you have to learn by trial and error on how to be good. The game has a hard difficulty level. Bad gameplay is when you are doing things correctly, but the outcome comes out wrong. NES GOLF It’s very definition of “ball don’t lie.” If you hit a hole in one by hitting max power and 2 bars to hook it with 0 wind . If you hit that same exact shot on that same hole with same wind, it’s a hole in one again! “Ball don’t lie.” Get a handle of how the clubs operate once and You have a good hang of clubs and how much ball rolls or not and how much wind can change the ball flight.. You have to take into account all these factors, just like real golf . Also like golf, you can play the shot safely and straighter which might be the best way to go about it, or you can use high winds along with a hook or slice to really shoot some super creative approach shots. Of course some people think this game is dull and bare bones, but those bones are solid as heck and if you have the same wind speed and hit the same club with the same amount of power and accuracy, you can recreate the shot exactly to the pixel which is why “ball don’t lie.” The cpu can’t mess you up at all. Your scores are exactly based on your skills inside this game and no external factor can change that. There’s two versions of this game. The beginners and confused player, then there’s the players that know all the club lengths and understand all the small nuances within the game. The 2nd game feels like a huge BLANK SLATE and the golf course is your canvas and your shots is your brushes!! Another 2 versions of the game is sober playing which is hitting shots straight and safe. 2nd version is when your buzzed or drunk, which loosens myself up to being more open to using a bigger club than usual and using the wind and a hook/slice to bring the ball in from the side! Love this game to death, been playing it since i was a kid in late 80s!!! Over 30 yrs playing same friggen 18 holes!!! 😂😂😂😂
Did you do “John Elways QB” on Nintendo? When you used “Bo Jackson”? The one running back. He could run all over everyone. Maybe it was a TE. Lol another classic from this era
I spent a summer in the mid-00s playing and loving NES black box Golf on one of those bootleg 5200 in one consoles. There was a small graphical tile swap with the letters (N became T and vice versa) so it was always enjoyable to see 'Waner hazard' or 'Butker' when the ball didn't go where you wanted.
nice review. Which one would you recommend to play with buds over beers? I have always found golf games to not be intuitive on the NES. I remember having NES Golf as a kid, and did like how simple it was.

Sadly I don’t think I played any golf games on the NES. We played pebble beach golf links on the Genesis a lot though but there’s atleast a few to check out on this list. I’m definitely interested in the grand slam one and the Mario on ofcourse

Seems like there was always something they had to mess up in those days and the strange thing was ,it could have all been avoided if they just paid more attention to what they were doing. In nes open for example, they cursor was way too fast, even on the slow setting causing you to curve the shot. Yes I know it's hook or slice but I don't know which is which). In tiger woods no matter how gently you put, the ball rolls for 45 ft. This has to be harder than real golf or else no one would play it in real life. Other games have such weird controls that if you don't have the Manuel, you may not be able to play them and in some cases go beyond the title screen. Believe it or not, the game titled 'golf' for the original game boy played pretty good. So why did they go backwards from there? Also the Greg Norman golf asked if you wanted to overwrite the game. I was not computer savvy, and this drove me nuts wondering if I clicked on it what would happen. Of course I was frustrated not being able to save progress. Another thing was the audience was also young children as well who probably didn't know what overwrite meant either. Couldn't they just ask," do you want to save your progress?"
@@SquarePegs I don't mean to complain, I really enjoyed the video! I was just a little surprised to see Golf ranking with the other D tier games. Maybe It's just personal opinion but I always thought it's was a decent game for the time.

Lot of revisionist history here. As a kid renting these games in the 80s and early 90s, we weren’t comparing against stuff that came later. I agree that Greg Norman is awful and Grand Slam is great, but the OGs (Mario, Lee, Jack) deserve more respect. Games weren’t expected to have training wheels back then
Not revisionist history at all, my friend. These are all looked at and rated based on the day it was recorded. I can't rate something based upon perception from when they were originally released - especially when in cases like these games, I hadn't played 95% of them. And Jack Nicklaus is horrific, man. That game is absolutely awful.
I worked on golf games, I understand the need to learn your clubs. But the overall simplicity of the 8-bit golf games do not lend themselves to the intricacies of simulated golf.
I don't think your score for NES Golf was fair. It should've been compared to what was available up to that point in time and it was WAY better than what you would've found on the Intellivsion or Colecovision...to say nothing of how WEIRD Atari 2600's golf game looked! Though I will concede that it's a "gets the job done" but not much else. I think a better score would be around C+ to B- range.

Played the heck out of Jack Nicklaus golf back in the day. No idea why. I didn't play golf, nor did I know who Jack was. I guess I was bored.

Golf Grand Slam is a seriously scarce game on the NES and extremely undervalued.
NES Golf is an amazing game especially considering that it's an 8 bit game...I still play it today
