How Hawaii Was Stolen by a Fruit Juice Company

- Why did the US want Hawaii? With even a glance at its sensual beaches and lush jungles, it's no surprise that the scenic islands have always been desirable. But as with any story of settlement, the development of Hawaii didn't come about as peacefully or honorably as its sumptuous vistas would have you believe. For American lawyer and entrepreneur Sanford Ballard Dole, Hawaii was a gold mine - or at least a pineapple one - and he used his government influence and self-appointed position in Hawaii to push the US toward taking over the islands in the late 1890s.

This is important that we're taught this. It's insane how much power private companies had back then... and nowadays we have those teach giants...
Indeed. For those who think billionaires taking over whole companies or creating an economy equivalent to a small country has never happened before, I direct them to Hawaii, a state that was LITERALLY BORN FROM capitalist corruption.

There was a group of Norwegians that were tricked into travelling to Hawaii with promises of well payed work. They were know as "Akamei" because this is what they said about their situation picking pineapple (Akamei = Oh dear me).
Do you got any sources? In Norwegian "Akk er meg!" ("meg" = "me" is pronounced "mei") is about the same as: "Woe is me", only not used in modern language anymore.
Would be interesting to hear more about this, if you know.
The source is a magazine article I read many years ago. The phrase is old, I think this was in the 1880's. They had been recruited through newspaper ads and signed up on what seemed to be good contracts. The housing and work hours were not as advertised but they were poor and could not afford the ticket home. Thus they complained "Woe is me!"
As they wrote letters home to plead for assistance, it became a media story of the day.@@elvenkind6072

Eh, America has its up and downs. Same as Hawai‘i, even as a Hawaiian I admit that. Hawai‘i has a history of people slaughtering each other and overthrowing. And even in the Kingdom times, it was struck with disease, low population, and even poverty. Yet it was also a nation focused on education (2nd in literacy at the time in the world), had a semi-democratic system, had major allies and very open to the world, and very tolerant on races. Also in old Hawai'i, there were Kapu laws that kept people in check but ended due to Christianity.

Mahalo for making this video and educating the masses about the injustices of the past which will be righted one day
The injustices of King Kamehameha? He took the islands by force. Is he an imperialist? If you're going to make the BS "injustices" argument, you need to include all of the injustices. Not just the ones that fit your narrative.
@@TheJayhawker83 Hi sweetie, sorry to trigger you. You're getting off topic as we're not talking about Pai`ea Kamehameha here we're talking about Dole as the video title says. King Kamehameha was a Fuedalistic Overlord, the British before 1945 were an Empire, there is no painting King K as an imperialist. I mean is he called Emperor Kamehameha or King Kamehameha? So back on track, the "injustices" Clearly referred to in the context of the Video are as follows...Fact: 1893 overthrow was an insurrection of mostly Hawaii born caucasian subjects (e.g. the committee of safety e.g. Thurston, Dole, etc.). Fact: Queen Lili`uokalani tried to resolve the matter diplomatically and address the insurrection in accordance with Kingdom Law. Fact: An 1895 proposal to US congress to Annex Hawaii FAILED to pass in congress. Fact: An 1898 US Joint Resolution is NOT a treaty of Annexation in accordance with any and all international Law. The 600k+ born and raised people of Hawaii know and live the injustice everyday, and unless you're from Hawai`i as we are, and know Hawaiian History intimately, as we do, you could not begin to understand how ignorant and asinine you sound. Try looking up Dr. Keanu Sai or Haunani Trask for some real education. Have a good day!
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What an unique and interesting history!
2:02 What an experience it would be to be a merchant traveling there!
President Cleveland refused the annexation of Hawaii. It took the election of imperialist SOB McKinley to approve it. Cleveland called it "a shameful affair". The "fueling station" was also in the imposed treaty of the US on Cuba for Guantanamo. There is no mention of a prison so the US has violated its own treaty. McKinley started the Spanish-American War on false pretenses. That has become standard operating procedure for US wars.
After this episode, you might like to do one on the US conquest of the Philippines which Mark Twain strenuously opposed. He was the VP of the Anti-Imperialist League.
Sounds like you are any about a lot of things. The Guatonemo prison is useful and it will remain for indefinitely. Sure Hawaii is so much better of then if they were conquered by China or Japan which is 100% what would have happened.

The Dragonball reference is all I ever needed
While I applaud teaching the history of Hawaii, you have to understand that Sanford Dole was part of the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani, not his younger cousin, James. James did not arrive in Hawaii until 1899, a full 6 years after cousin Sanford became the de facto leader of the 'Provincial Government of Hawaii.' James Dole was no saint, but pineapple juice was not the reason for the tragedy of land theft from the Kingdom of Hawaii. It was actually sugar that started the rip-off of Kanaka Maoli. James Dole was still in agriculture school when the Bayonet Constitution was forced on King Kalakaua. Any history written by Haole must be taken with a grain of salt. I suggest the writing of David Malo or Samuel Kamakau if you want the true story of Hawaii. I enjoy 'Weird History' but the theft of land by Haole is no joke and not pono to Kanaka...
I'm so sick and tired of existing in such an evil world.

TAKING OUR JOBS!
I lived in Hawaii for 15 years and learned a lot. This is an interesting, but somewhat lopsided video built on half truths. Out of the 4 million acres of ariable land, only 30,000 acres were given to the commoners by the King. The rest he kept for himself, or gave to tribal kings that he had conquered or to relatives. The king sold great portions of the land to many different groups. King Kam the Fifth sold off the entire Island of Niihao! When I lived there, only 5,600 pure Hawaiians even existed, as they had inter married with Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, etc. The school system is funded by the King Kamehameha land trust that supports the school system. Our house was on Trust land which had a 99 year lease that was running out. The Trust sold the land under our house to us for a great deal of money. Like I say, there are a huge number of true facts that are not even touched on in this video.
Too bad that most of the Hawaiian isles are still property of non natives, the Hawaiian people should get them back.
