I guarantee someone knew they were there, they just didn’t tell anyone because they wanted the site to remain pristine.
That’s a reasonable statement. Even if tourists and explorers were careful to not touch anything, they could still cause damage just by being there in person (use your imagination).
To act as a calendar, the circular petroglyph would need to face South and have something fairly close which casts a shadow on it which changes position through the seasons.
