You know what? I'll bet back in the bad old days, ASMR, had it existed in its present form, would've been outlawed by the church and treated almost like witchcraft. They probably would've considered it witchcraft adjacent, at the very least.
ASMR (the phenomenon, not the genre) has likely existed for as long as humans have existed. Almost all religions and cults have had some forms of nerve activations and meditative or ecstatic states being used "spiritually" to get some divine feeling. Witchcraft is only a facet of that, but more broadly any spirituality would've overlapped here.
