Good call on the clogged liquid header. I loaded 150 reefers on the vessel last night and wouldn't you know it the last one loaded tripped the breaker when I energized it. Deckman told me the operator slammed the box hard. The units run on 440 3 phase so the first thing I checked was the plug and cord, nope all good. I open the control panel only to find both phase correction contactors pulled in without power to the unit..!! I get them to take it back off the ship and Today I replaced both contactors and found out they must have slammed the container pretty hard because The compressor and piping was damaged as well. So I replaced the compressor and straitened the piping and its good to go. It will catch the next ship...! Its always something...!!
Nice job there, good on you for checking all the joints that are new, including the factory ones. I miss that tub of bubble juice with the sponge on the end of the little wand in the end of them. They work so well, I used to do a mix of domestic and light commercial work. That bottle of bubble juice was awesome. I enjoyed, thanks for sharing the frosty morning outing.
Just a note... Carrier had several issues with these. They came out with a quick fix. Works about 9 out of 10 times. Add AC Renew to system and let it run a little bit. Believe it or not It works. They suspect dirty coils burning oil, contamination is causing most of the problems. And AC Renew will flush the pistons out. I have not had to change one out. Since I have tryed this.
yeah no luck for me. installed a new system and about 1.5 months later it was down with the Acutrol metering device so I replaced the filter dryer, check valves (heat pump) and per carriers instructions pored the Zerol ice directly into an open header not injecting it into the system. let her rip over night. no good tried to switch it back and forth between heat and cool(heat pump) to maybe break it lose. no luck. I got pissed and threw a fit about how a brand new machine is broken I'm factory authorized dealer. and it's making me look bad to my customer. so they gave me a new machine and paid for the crane. but not the labor so that was a loser install for sure.
Something else curious. I’ve found when a condenser motor fails raising the head pressure this will cause the pistons to clog as well. Always check the motor bearings and run caps. Replace them before they fail. I have a location with 17 of these units. I’ve had to replace 2 headers do to motor failure. My theory is the high heat and higher pressure break down the shellac of the windings clogging the pistons. It’s a theory but it seems fact to me.
Great job brazing - what size tip you running? I do all my brazing with a 0 tip running 8 acetylene, 18 oxygen @ the regs. I like the 0 for flame control in tight spaces.
Did you confirm if the orifice was blank from the factory or was it a contamination issue? I've been watching a lot of your videos. They're very well done and informative! I'm surprised how many refrigeration system issues you run into. I did the same type of work (Mostly RTU's) for 17 years until I changed careers and became an HVAC instructor. I never saw so many refrigeration issues that required such invasive repairs. Is it 410A and the POE oil, or just shitty factory procedures?
Very nice job on that.. You would think that bottom tube of the header would be the problem area.. As always, learning something from you.,every time i watch your videos.. Thanks brother, for your time and videos.. Bryan Tyler Refrigeration

Good vid 👍 Nicely done with the header , mate , must have been a pain getting the tubing that broke off out though . And the leaky stuff from the factory , that does say a lot about the equipment quality nowadays , innit !
I got lucky and was able to braze a smaller piece of copper to that broken stub and then unbrazed the entire thing-- I was honestly surprised it worked
Really great video but can someone please tell me how this was diagnosed? What was the problem when you were called out and how did you find it? Or just send me somewhere where I can learn about it. Thanks!
I had filmed the diagnosis but the footage didn't turn out so I couldn't use it---- basically 3 pistons where frosting up as it ran coupled with low capacity
That little bottle I believe is from refrigeration technologies, I got that from Young Supply a long time ago-- I just refill it with bubbles from the spray bottle every once in awhile
vapor side starts pumping down so it looks like its low on charge. tubing doesn't change temp because its not moving refrigerant just sitting there. frost forming after the acutrol metering device. looks like if you had a kink in the liquid line because its acting like a restriction in a bad way.
I had one of these right in the middle of a summer at a Burger King. I just pulled the entire evap coil and fixed it that away. Gotta be pretty good at brazing copper because that shit is thin on the Evap. I’m afraid doing this repair always shortens the lifespan of the coil.
Must be slow doing AC in the winter, Hang in there Bud, Kind of sucks to not trust in new parts any more, move to the side race to the bottom in full swing.
The footage I had diagnosing the unit was ruined so I couldnt post it-- but 3 of the piston tubes where frosted up, on top of lower then normal capacity, supply temp and slightly higher super heat
@@curioushvacguy6876 that was my guess but I wanted to see if I was right. definitely good pick up. when I come across that model I'll definitely know now to check that area.
Randy Torboli they do but you don’t want a Carrier. I’d check on an American Standard. Check consumer reports. They have less break downs. That unit Curious was in is a Carrier. You need a higher static pressure unit for a trailer do to the smaller duct work. That’s if you want it done properly. Oh and get one with a TXV.
Curious HVAC Guy Trane makes a TXV kit for their precedent series RTUs that had the accutrol metering device. I’ve used it on carrier as well with great success
Its alot less hassle to just cut it apart and then unbraze the stubs. I do the same thing with reversing valves sometimes because it's a pain to remove the top 3 pipes depending on the unit.
I thought wow this guy fixes something on a Carrier! I wondered which one it would be....the Truman, the Ronald Reagan - hey maybe the new Gerald R. Ford!.....and then I was like...........Oh.

That sucks..!
Mine have all been units working before. Then get the dreaded some tubes freezing. Low Back pressure restriction issues.
Thanks for the tip
I just wish carrier would do away the orifice header and use a TXV
Great video, the editing was awesome, the repair work was cool and it was funny! Nicely done.
thanks bud

I'm curious to how did it iced on this header or how did you find the restriction at this location?

It speaks volumes to the quality ya know- thanks for the support sterling
Impressive, never thought you could get that replaced let alone the factory solder joint sucks lol
Great video. Curious, how much charge did it take in from a vacuum?
Hey Rookie- If I remember correctly I was able to get the entire factory charge in there- I had to warm the bottle of refrigerant up though
Now that's how to braze... Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching RJ-
Good work! How did you end up getting the broken piece of copper out. Seems like atleast one brakes every time I change a header on them.
I got lucky and was able to braze a smaller piece of copper to that broken stub and then unbrazed the entire thing-- I was honestly surprised it worked

Yeah buddy- it get frigid sometimes-- id take a winter with a low of 30 for a few years
Great video man! "How special!" I woke the dog. I expect nothing less from Carrier

I need to get me a brush like you have to apply bubbles to inside joints. Any link or is that a general brush or sorts?
That little bottle I believe is from refrigeration technologies, I got that from Young Supply a long time ago-- I just refill it with bubbles from the spray bottle every once in awhile
Good find, keep up the good work

What was the symptom? Nice job. That’s a lot of work getting all that gear on the roof
Hvac 1 I was wondering about symptom too.
vapor side starts pumping down so it looks like its low on charge. tubing doesn't change temp because its not moving refrigerant just sitting there. frost forming after the acutrol metering device. looks like if you had a kink in the liquid line because its acting like a restriction in a bad way.
dirtbikenrcman thank you for the reply.
Exactly what dirtbikencrman said- I filmed the diagnosis but the footage got ruined somehow
Good work, keep up the same. Good work will give you more work!

how did you know there was a problem with that header? I havent come across that or maybe that's something I missed?

No nitrogen purging while doing that?
Yes I did have a little nitrogen going through that system when I put everything back together

Does carrier make a package unit that can be installed in a mobile home
Randy Torboli they do but you don’t want a Carrier. I’d check on an American Standard. Check consumer reports. They have less break downs. That unit Curious was in is a Carrier. I always cut them out with linesman pliers and put in a txv
Yeah, thats also a great way to repair this issue
Curious HVAC Guy Trane makes a TXV kit for their precedent series RTUs that had the accutrol metering device. I’ve used it on carrier as well with great success
Definitely cut it out with junk tin snips and umbraze the nubs
Why did you cut it out and then unbraze ? Couldn’t you just unbraze it whole?
Its alot less hassle to just cut it apart and then unbraze the stubs. I do the same thing with reversing valves sometimes because it's a pain to remove the top 3 pipes depending on the unit.
Yeah there isnt a real good way to ubraze 5 or 6 tubes at the same time so your better off to cut them apart and un braze each one by itself
great job
Thanks
nice fix!!
Thanks
Is there a prior video to this one was curious how to determine the tube was plugged
Sorry, there would have been- but most of the original footage was ruined some how, realized that when I went back to edit it
Great vid, had flash backs of old Kung foo movies.... lips moving out of time with words...
I think I want to do this on all my videos, lol-- im sure I would get trolled hard for that but it would be hilarious for a bit
