The Nutty Buddy is my favorite, but almost all their snacks are really good. And it's great that they have such a variety. Bonus points for their genuinely reasonable prices.
My mom used to buy Little Debbie cakes for our sack lunches (in theory); she actually kept them hidden under stuff in the pantry and ate them herself, so your comment about hiding in the dark pantry was hella accurate :)
@@applegal3058 It really was--she once made an entire pan of peanut-butter-fudge rice krispie treats for my dad to take to work, but ate half the pan and didn't want him to know, so she just ate the whole pan and baked another. As a lifelong native Chattanoogan, Little Debbie has always been apart of our lives. Down the road from the Corporate Office of McKee foods, is the Little Debbie Store, where their boxes of cakes are discounted. It's worth a stop if you're ever in Collegedale, TN.
I’ve been to a Little Debbie store in Arkansas. I saw things I’d never seen on the grocery store shelves where I’m from. And the prices? The prices were outstanding! Whole boxes of goodness for just a bit more than grocery store prices. Of course I bought wayyyy to many…. 🤦🏽♀️
Little Debbie was a big part of my life as a child growing up in the Chattanooga area in the 1960s. I enjoyed going on school field trips to the factory in Collegedale where every child went away with a snack cake. Little Debbie was a local supporter of school and civic events. Several times my class or Cub Scout troup was on the Bob Brandy Show on ABC Channel 9. Little Debbie (McKee Bakery) was a sponsor and Little Debbie treats were regularly given as prizes. I won an entire box of Oatmeal Creme Pies by giving the closest guess to "How far is it from Chattanooga to ____________?" Decades later, I still enjoy the occasional Little Debbie snack, but can't consume them as frequently as I could as a child. This video brought back great memories. Thank you.

My mom never bought LD or Hostess. She made us delicious treats like carrot cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, dense fudgy brownies with chunks of fresh pecans from our own trees, homemade peach cobbler (again, ripe peaches from our own trees). Her fresh apple cake was legendary. I was 50 yrs old the first time I tried a Little Debbie snack cake, and only because my husband raved about how good they were. The biggest snake cake in the Southern U.S. by far is Little Debbie. A box of Oatmeal Cream Pies is given to every child at birth. Every brand of snack cake gets called Little Debbie's down here, too. Regardless of the actual brand. Except Twinkies. A Twinkie is a Twinkie. The rest are called Little Debbie's. And honestly Little Debbie is way better than Hostess, Tasty Kake, Dolly Maddison, etc. For real.
I never got "desserts" with my bag lunches when I attended grade school in the 1960's. Mom had to economize and make sure we kids got no-nonsense nutrition. I made up for this later - I discovered Little Debbie snacks for the first time while putting myself through college. I bought the oatmeal cream pies and nutty bars for snacking on while I studied. Still buy them occasionally. They are good!
Always looking foward to seeing another video from you guys, been subscribed since the beginning. You asked what food I want to see next, and being European I feel that this channel is very American centric. It's a lot of fun to learn about the history of your food, but looking into the other parts of the world would be a lot of fun too! Hopefully you'd take me up on the suggestion, and maybe i'll get to see a european food history? (Maybe even a danish one!) Keep up the great work!
We go through about 10 boxes of LDs a week. I pick them up as snacks for the crew at the pizza shop I manage. The crew loves them, and the sugar rush they get puts a little extra pep in their step. Lol
Little Debbie either licensed the rights to their product names or started their own ice cream line. Oatmeal Cream Pie, Zebra stripes, nutty buddy and more.
I'll never forgive them for discontinuing the Caramel Cookie Bars. It was like a big Twix, but made by Little Debbie and they were absolutely excellent. But sometime in the last 5 years or so they stopped making them with zero announcement. Nor have they ever acknowledged why they discontinued them and whether they'll ever come back.
I total agree the Pumpkin Delights are the best thing Little Debbie ever made, 100% better than the Apple Delights & they were delicious. I usually buy at least 6 or so boxes when they come out yearly & refrigerate to keep fresh past the expire date.
I live in the chattanooga area. I used to work at a company called reliable heating and air. We have done work in Debbie's house she is definitely still alive to this day. She also works at the little Debbie company as one of the line managers. She is a simple ole country girl who lives in a simple house and loves horses. Her grandfather started the business when she was a little girl, and when it became real popular, he decided to use her picture as his advertisement, which is now little Debbie. Oh, and by the way, she stayed away from the Debbie cakes because she is in good shape. And when we were in her house she never once offered us one cake😂. This video is correct!
Their manufacturing company is very strict. Late 3 times, you’re fired. They have terrific benefits, though, including a cool free recreation building. 👍🏻
I had issues with them many years ago and as an apology they sent a whole box full of different snacks and a coupon for the apology ❤ that was very nice of them. To this day I still buy their products and my kids like them too.
i used to have Swiss rolls from my auntie's freezer as a kid back in my early days of grade school, thanks for sharing this classic memory and i'll cya next video! (i also enjoyed the zebra cakes, cosmic brownies and oatmeal pie snacks in high school whenever we went out to football games)
They treat their employees well. I had an interview there in Collegedale when I was young I was told that no one quits McKee, they retire. That was years ago. Little Debbie’s were a staple in our house. They have always been my favorites. I am from Chattanooga.
I grew up five or six houses down the road from OD McKee. Although his bakery was in Collegedale, he lived on the other side of White Oak Mountain in Ooltewah. Once a year he would throw a big pool party at his impressive mansion for the neighbors.
My last name is Daugherty. Because of this video, I went searching for JTG Daugherty in regards to NASCAR. By going down this rabbit hole, I learned about several new people, learned about a sport I had no prior interest in and am now doing a deep dive into the name Daugherty itself. The knowledge in these videos sparks a quest for more.
I grew up eating these snacks and as an adult today, I regret....every....single...oatmeal cream pie I've eaten. Great video. I enjoyed every minute of it.
1:18 wow :) that's great to know she is still alive, she basically shaped my childhood! I thought maybe she would be long gone by now, but it's beautiful and refreshing to see what she looks like today. 2:15 this is such an adorable turn!!!!
Little Debbie's is about as foreign to us Aussies as Vegemite is to the rest of the World... Maybe one day Weird History Food could do an episode on Vegemite? Vegemite is an acquired taste that not even all Australians like, but many of us love. It's usually served on toasted white bread or as a cheese and Vegemite sandwich, and I've heard of some people adding Vegemite to stews or casseroles. Thanks for sharing the Weird History of Little Debbie's, It was great.
no way it is 'as foreign' because you guys have other snack cakes. no one else but you and the uk has vegemite (as far as i know). and there's no equivalent. you can actually find vegemite in the states i got it and tried it once and thought it tasted like metal boiled in blood...
Love the Oatmeal, Fudge Round and Star Crunch pies. Her donuts and brownies are great, too. The Strawberry Shortcake Rolls will give you the shakes if you go too long without them. That's how addicting they are! 😅
The jokes in this video had me rolling 😂 I learned some new things and snickered at the funny parts- good job! (FYI I hate snack cakes and even did as a little kid-they were way too sweet for me. Of course I also hate soda so maybe I’m just a weirdo 🤷🏻♀️)
My dad dated a woman who lives in little Debbie’s childhood home. I always thought it was crazy that it wasn’t turned into a museum. I might have thought little Debbie was the most important person in food
I live next to the Gentry Arkansas bakery, and the company direct sales store on the other side of me. I drove a truck for them a short time and visited a couple times with Debbie. They are a great company to work for and Debbie is a great lady to talk to.
Total nostalgia, but also total sugar (and I'm a sweets person). The iced cakes are way too much for me except on occasion. I like the strawberry rolls as well but scrape the icing off of the bottom, so overwhelmingly sweet.
Both of my parents worked at Mckee Foods in the late 70’s/early 80’s. My mom was in college next door at Southern Adventist University (known as Southern Missionary College back then) while my dad was a college dropout. Mom was on the assembly line and dad drove a forklift in the warehouse. My dad got to meet Debbie herself and seems to have had a crush on her (by the way he talks about her) back then. Though people often mistook them for siblings due to both of them being about the same age with fiery red hair 😂. Apparently they and most employees were banned from the room that contained the machine that rolled the Swiss Cake Rolls because it was (and maybe still is) a trade secret. All competing products were rolled by hand at the time so the machine apparently saved Little Debbie a lot of money back in the day.
But yes it’s safe to say I grew up on Little Debbie snack cakes. I still have a habit (in my mid-30’s) of buying a box and then eating the whole thing in one shot and afterward feeling nauseous AF so I don’t do that often. 😆
Anyone else catch the big boxes mega trees this year? I thought it was just gonna be more of the regular size trees in there, but oh no, it was 6 giant goddamn trees. I felt like Jeff Glodblum, standing there looking in the box and thinking, "you crazy son-of-a-bitch, you did it..."
1. Little Debbie is a lifelong friend. When I was a scumbag skater, back in the 80's, a common session "snack" was a 32oz gatorade and a full box of Star Crunch. I can still destroy a box of swiss rolls or nutty butty bars in a startlingly small amount of time. 2. Hostess would do well to focus on their fruit pie line, something Deb has never mastered.
We rarely had store-bought goodies in our house due to the cost, but if we did get some, it was Little Debbie! I loved the apple turnovers which I haven't seen in years now. I remember when I was in grade school, LD had a promotion for "Dolls from Around the World'. If you sent in so many box tops or some type of proof of purchase, they'd send you a little doll dressed in a cultural costume from various countries. There were about 10 dolls as I recall. It was such a treat to have collected enough "proofs" to send for another doll to add to the collection! I'd kind of forgotten about those until I saw this. Thanks!
HERE'S some history... Little Debbie's used to be TWICE the size before shrink-flation the past five years or so! The oatmeal cream pies were at least 4" across, for example. And they used to include ingredients we could pronounce.
Great video!! There's several LD treats I like: Zebra Cakes, Cosmic Brownies, Fudge Rounds, and Oatmeal cream pies... I know I should eat them less because they're so fattening and probably full of chemicals. But it's hard to find a good treat at a decent price nowadays :') $3 for a whole box is a steal now.
Yes! I didn't encounter Little Debbie's until adulthood, but in the New York Metro area where I grew up, Entenmann's ably filled that niche in the snack ecosystem. 😀 And IMO with good reason - those soft-and-chewy chocolate chip cookies are the bomb!
Top three: 1: Oatmeal Creme Pies (the large sized ones, but not the double decker.) 2: Nutty Bars (I'll be dead before I'll call them Nutty Buddys.) 3: Swiss Cake Rolls. I will entertain no dissent. Thank you.
Contrary to popular belief, Little Debbie has been out of Nascar since 2011, Nowadays Wood Brothers is sponsored by Motorcraft & Dex Imaging and JTG Daughtry is sponsored by Kroger Also the Sprint Cup Series is now just the Nascar Cup Series (They have 4 title sponsors at this point)
My ex-fiance always called me Honey Buns she still calls me that now that we're still friends ( with benefits). Aside from that my top 3 favorite Little Debbie snacks are Nutty Bars, Strawberry Shortcake Rolls and of course Honey Buns.
Nutty buddy’s, Swiss rolls, strawberry shortcake rolls… my top 3. However there are quite a few in this video that I’ve never seen before, I might find a new favorite.
I am certain that they used to sell something like nutty bars that had chocolate wafers and a dark chocolate cream that were exceptional. They were less sweet and were more subtle. It seems like something a lot of people would like.
Ive been eating Swiss rolls since 1972 i can remember my mom giving them to me to calm me down ! I have fond memories of my childhood eating my favorite comfort food ! Thank You mom and Little Debbie
I've always been curious when it came to certain snack foods, how often their ingredients changed.Doritos for instance.Did they always use MSG or was it added later on.
McKee was one of the best companies to drive a truck for, for a long time. They paid very well. The drivers were home every weekend. And if they didn't make it home before sundown Friday night, they had to shut the truck down, check into a motel, and could not get back into the truck until after sundown Saturday night. No smoking was allowed in the trucks, and smokers need not apply. And the factories are located close to Seventh-day Advestist schools and colleges to provide work for the students to pay their school costs.
O.D. asked my religion professor if it was wrong making such 3:18 sugary snacks (as Adventists have this thing about eating healthy). He replied, “there’s no such thing as junk food; there are only junk diets”. I thought that was a pretty good response.
I was interviewing for a job at McKee foods when Debbie stopped by to say hello to the man interviewing me. (They were old family friends.) And I got the job. I've been working there nearly 22 years.

The one thing I really wished they would bring back are the mint wafers from the 1980's. Similar to the nutty buddy's. Those were so good.
Kinder Surprises!
The oatmeal cream pies and nutterbutter 😋
I have always liked the oatmeal cream pies, yeah. One of my favorites is Star Crunch. I like to have a Star Crunch while watching a space movie.
We go through about 10 boxes of LDs a week. I pick them up as snacks for the crew at the pizza shop I manage. The crew loves them, and the sugar rush they get puts a little extra pep in their step. Lol
@@tommolldev 🤣😂🤣
Ok I have to say that I'm so proud of Deb and love her with all my heart. The most caring and humble person I have ever known. ❤️❤️
Little Debbie either licensed the rights to their product names or started their own ice cream line. Oatmeal Cream Pie, Zebra stripes, nutty buddy and more.
They already do have ice cream line and cereal
The peanut butter creme pie that they have are to die for
I'll never forgive them for discontinuing the Caramel Cookie Bars. It was like a big Twix, but made by Little Debbie and they were absolutely excellent. But sometime in the last 5 years or so they stopped making them with zero announcement. Nor have they ever acknowledged why they discontinued them and whether they'll ever come back.
Oh man! I loved those. 😭
Probably has something to do with money and the profit margin.
Wrigley's did that with their green apple gum, my grandmother and I were so bummed!
yea those caramel cookie bars were good
My favorite. 😔
Still petitioning for Pumpkin Delights to be available year round 🙋♀️ 🎃
They discontinued apple flips, yet these nasty things exist
@@laashedden1675 I've never heard of either. I guess it depends on where you live. I live in Baltimore.
I total agree the Pumpkin Delights are the best thing Little Debbie ever made, 100% better than the Apple Delights & they were delicious. I usually buy at least 6 or so boxes when they come out yearly & refrigerate to keep fresh past the expire date.
Yes, they are so delicious
My fave Little Debbie snack is the limited edition carrot cake rolls. They are very rare but so delicious!
I live about 20 miles from the bakery. A friend from high school dated one of Little Debbie’s great grand daughters. That’s all I have for now. 😂
Honestly ever since I started healing from my anorexia, Little Debbie snacks have been my go-to since I can’t handle plain normal food that much
I strongly believe the first Nobel Prize for food should be given to the Little Debbie Swiss Cake Roll
I used to tease my friend Debbie with that slogan.
"Hey little Debbie got a snack for me?"
That is a great idea!
no way it is 'as foreign' because you guys have other snack cakes. no one else but you and the uk has vegemite (as far as i know).
and there's no equivalent. you can actually find vegemite in the states i got it and tried it once and thought it tasted like metal boiled in blood...
@@Goldi-Luc well of course we have snack cakes, little Debbie's as a brand name is foreign to us... that's what the videos about right?
@@Goldi-Luc there's also Promite and Marmite which are similar to Vegemite.
Love the Oatmeal, Fudge Round and Star Crunch pies. Her donuts and brownies are great, too. The Strawberry Shortcake Rolls will give you the shakes if you go too long without them. That's how addicting they are! 😅
Man this Cosmic Brownies are such satisfyingly gummy goodness. My mouth is watering despite knowing they’re full of chemicals lol.
Beautiful job putting this together. Enjoyed it very much. Great narrating!!🥰
Nutty Bars and Oatmeal Creme Pies are my favorites. I've never seen the raisin cookies. I must be part droid because I would definitely try them.
Raisins are delicious, but ugly.
@@RaisonLychi lol
I live next to the Gentry Arkansas bakery, and the company direct sales store on the other side of me. I drove a truck for them a short time and visited a couple times with Debbie. They are a great company to work for and Debbie is a great lady to talk to.
Total nostalgia, but also total sugar (and I'm a sweets person). The iced cakes are way too much for me except on occasion. I like the strawberry rolls as well but scrape the icing off of the bottom, so overwhelmingly sweet.
Same for me, I like the occasional sweet thing but not *too* sweet
You're not a sweets person then your an imposter 😂 I been woofin these things down since was a kid
Even as a kid I thought the strawberry rolls we're sweet and you can only have 1.
That comment really made me laugh
Sadly, there is no Little Debbie in my country. And now that I know about it, I wished to try some of Little Debbie's products!
Can you order through Amazon?
Little Debbie makes the best Honey Buns! 😋
Unicorn meat slowly roasting over a campfire. Delicious.
Thanks!
I'm always amazed and jealous of the immense variety of sweets and snacks that Americans have.
Hmm yes because we are the only country who has dessert snacks. Gtfoh 🤣
@@Lyssa0095 ummm no need to be rude
We have snacks that other countries don’t have
I found that insightful... Being in the UK, there are precisely zero of any of these sold here - not even as rebrands...
HERE'S some history... Little Debbie's used to be TWICE the size before shrink-flation the past five years or so! The oatmeal cream pies were at least 4" across, for example. And they used to include ingredients we could pronounce.
I love Little Debbie cakes. While individually packaged, they’re more expensive, the boxes of them are good for their price
I'm glad they cleared up that the zebra cakes aren't made with real zebras.
Love this!
Would love to know the background of Entenmann's. When I was young, I was addicted to their coffee cake :)
Yes! I didn't encounter Little Debbie's until adulthood, but in the New York Metro area where I grew up, Entenmann's ably filled that niche in the snack ecosystem. 😀 And IMO with good reason - those soft-and-chewy chocolate chip cookies are the bomb!
Top three:
1: Oatmeal Creme Pies (the large sized ones, but not the double decker.)
2: Nutty Bars (I'll be dead before I'll call them Nutty Buddys.)
3: Swiss Cake Rolls.
I will entertain no dissent.
Thank you.
The animation in these videos is top-notch. At 2:56 - Check out the subtle motion of the womens’ hands as they work the frosting bags.
Contrary to popular belief, Little Debbie has been out of Nascar since 2011, Nowadays Wood Brothers is sponsored by Motorcraft & Dex Imaging and JTG Daughtry is sponsored by Kroger
Also the Sprint Cup Series is now just the Nascar Cup Series (They have 4 title sponsors at this point)
Yes! I loved those, I think they were called Fudge Crispy Bars.
*THAT DAMN LITTLE DEBBIE BROKE MY HEART when she quit making those delicious coconut rounds*
Oh man, I would love to have such a huge variety of snack cakes here in Germany.
You should see the supermarket aisles for breakfast cereals!
@@kirbyculp3449 yeah, I've heard about the obsession that the american people have towards their breakfast cereals😄
I guess it's good to be part of a community like that.
(Excuse my poor English)
O.D. asked my religion professor if it was wrong making such 3:18 sugary snacks (as Adventists have this thing about eating healthy). He replied, “there’s no such thing as junk food; there are only junk diets”. I thought that was a pretty good response.
Little Debbie changed the name of Nutty Bars to Nutty Buddies, and it took me years to notice.
Star Crunches were my favorite as a child. And how I became a chubster, I am sure 😂
