Everytime i watch this, my eyes fill with tears.
Especially when Jordi Savali's face appears when his deceased wife is singing.
Love will overcome borders, religion and politics.

Oh but grief is a selfish thing.
The soul lives on death is rebirth and it selfish to be sad.
      I am the resurrection
      I am the life
I am the light of God
      Peace and love

the strength Jordi Savall exhibits here is admirable - that has got to be so v. difficult to sit and listen to Montserrat singing and somehow summon the strength and courage to play - for those not familiar with the exceptional French film Tous Les Matins du Monde for which Jordi Savall played on the soundtrack - the elder reclusive cellist in the film also lost his wife when she was young and he bore that burden throughout his life raising his two daughters alone - the parallels cannot be lost on anyone - even on Jordi himself he must surely now recognize himself in that film though it is not film it is his reality - life can be so v. difficult at such times that it is near unbearable - I am not sure I could have done this - it would have far too painful to bear to hear her voice - this too has parallels in the film since the elder cellist sees these apparitions of his wife visiting him while he is playing alone at night in his isolated cabin such is the depth of his grief for her - her death at such an age was so tragic - I am almost certain Jordi would have taken some solace from the film and the manner in which the elder cellist dealt with his grief for his deceased wife ...

I think it is too sad, and a little intrusive of the camera recording their faces. They should have been more restrained. But music is what joins all them.

This song brought me to tears as my dear father one of the few Greek Jews of Spanish who survived the Holocaust would sing this us on the Sabbath . The first time I heard this lovely music I was in Istanbul, visiting a primary school. Children performed this fascinating song, which title I couldn't grasp, in a pretty pantomime. Its melody remained stuck in my mind snd years later, by chance, I watched this video and it was love again.

De 'sound' , de perfecte uitvoering, het evenwicht tussen de instrumenten en de menselijke stemmen zorgen voor een meegesleept worden door de muziek én deelgenoot worden aan de uitvoering van begin tot einde!

Why in a church? The acoustics are superb. Long ago when the biggest building in a village was the church, city hall, performances like this, and public meetings would be held at the church.

I have played it for probably a thousand times. This song has such a nice history! We have a version in Bengali written by famous poet Kazi Najrul Islam. He was a soldier in the first world war, and my guess is that is when he came across this tune. The tune is so unique, it blends to the local culture everywhere it went. When I listen to this clip, I usually forget that we live in a mess both in space and time. Thanks Nick Rasmussen for uploading this and for the information on artists.

He was sent to the Ottoman war by the British government during the British regime in India...Nazrul Researchers speculate it was during this time that he came across this tune.
