Oh but grief is a selfish thing.
The soul lives on death is rebirth and it selfish to be sad.
      I am the resurrection
      I am the life
I am the light of God

the strength Jordi Savall exhibits here is admirable - that has got to be so v. difficult to sit and listen to Montserrat singing and somehow summon the strength and courage to play - for those not familiar with the exceptional French film Tous Les Matins du Monde for which Jordi Savall played on the soundtrack - the elder reclusive cellist in the film also lost his wife when she was young and he bore that burden throughout his life raising his two daughters alone - the parallels cannot be lost on anyone - even on Jordi himself he must surely now recognize himself in that film though it is not film it is his reality - life can be so v. difficult at such times that it is near unbearable - I am not sure I could have done this - it would have far too painful to bear to hear her voice - this too has parallels in the film since the elder cellist sees these apparitions of his wife visiting him while he is playing alone at night in his isolated cabin such is the depth of his grief for her - her death at such an age was so tragic - I am almost certain Jordi would have taken some solace from the film and the manner in which the elder cellist dealt with his grief for his deceased wife ...

I think it is too sad, and a little intrusive of the camera recording their faces. They should have been more restrained. But music is what joins all them.

I have played it for probably a thousand times. This song has such a nice history! We have a version in Bengali written by famous poet Kazi Najrul Islam. He was a soldier in the first world war, and my guess is that is when he came across this tune. The tune is so unique, it blends to the local culture everywhere it went. When I listen to this clip, I usually forget that we live in a mess both in space and time. Thanks Nick Rasmussen for uploading this and for the information on artists.

Kâtibim ("the clerk"), or Üsküdar'a Gider İken, is a Turkish folk song about a woman and her clerk traveling to Üsküdar. The tune is a famous Istanbul türkü.
When going to Uskudar , a rain occurs
The coat of my clerk is long, his heels are covered in mud
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A lame jacket will look great in my clerk
When going to Uskudar , the grocer around the corner
pencil in hand, had its accounts
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A starched shirt also go to rob my clerk
In the hands of my clerk , a canary cage
The fez my cleric is too small for him
The cleric is willing, he will marry
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A starched shirt also go to rob my clerk
When going to Uskudar , I found a handkerchief
I filled out the handkerchief loukoums
When looking for my clerk, I found by my side
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A fragrant shirt also go to rob my clerk
The clerk walks arm in arm
The words of my clerk move me
The letters of my clerc are in my pockets
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A starched shirt also go to rob my clerk
When I going to Uskudar , my bundle caught fire
My cord is pulled , my watch fell
The womanizing Uskudar are chasing me
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A starched shirt also go to rob my clerk
The boats from Uskudar in Istanbul
My clerc is sitting, he dissects hazelnuts
In his dream , the clerk about me aloud
The clerk is mine and I am his , will mingle other
A starched shirt also go to rob my clerk
