If I recall China at one time they had land in Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, parts of Central Asia such as the areas around Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and eastern Kazakhstan. They also had more land in Burma, India and vassals across Eastern Asia. Like they had Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Tibet and Korea.
From my understanding, it wasn't really an ideological playground like it was later down the line, or like the Cold War, but the new Major powers of the world spreading their spheres of influence and supporting any warlord that they could. From the Soviets to the Japanese, to even the British and French, they threw their lot with any warlord willing to cooperate with them, and when WW2 came, the West and the USSR pumping Republican China with equipment and factory tools to fight off the Japanese who was continuously losing steam.

You have to be in a faction with china for the event to pop up. That’s how I got rid of the issue. I guess it’s because you have to be in the Sino-Japanese war

You should of also done anti-communist and anti-democratic raids. The amount of stability you would get from that to boost your factory output would be good
and if you dont wanna fight japan make the game go alt hist, and pray they go communist which is more likely than not I've found out if you play in china somewhere and then hope they get the toyko falls event (commie japan must seize tokyo) but it allows you to take all Japanese land in china for free.
