That bike does _not_ look almost 20 years old...
I was convinced this bike was made last year, until I saw the flaking paint on the frame and rusty reservoir holder. What a jizz machine.
It sounds like an engine from 1920 :(, by chance did an HD engineer make this one and slip it into there when nobody was looking?
Rare things age slower.
The first 75 were made in the UK, possibly assembled by Prodrive in Banbury.
Got caught out by rule changes which left Petronas with a 900cc 3pot when others used 1000cc fours and thus underpowered.
Still managed some podiums in 2004.
It really does look like a modern design, but that taillight brings it sharply back to the 2000s
This makes me feel so old, I remember reading all about it in magazines back in the day and seeing vids of it spitting flaes like mad on track.
We’ve had twins and tons of four cylinders... yet so few triples in big bikes (aside from triumph and MV can’t think of many others). Pity because they do sound great and fill a nice niche in terms of engine characteristics.
Beautiful bike, love the stacked lights.
Great times and bikes a absolute hero riders these times will never come again very sadly. 👍
That noise though, holy moly. Final edition Panigale or that? What a choice.
I'll take the Norton over both!
Please do more of these types of videos. Maybe taking a look at some old Honda rc bikes. Good channel guys

I remember those in WSBK constantly in flames. Rocking horse shit these days, well done finding one.
It found them!
Tasty is what it is
A (positive) comment about the sound - I believe it was in 2004 when I saw the FP1 at the WSB event at Assen campaigned by Chris Walker (when he suffered an injury (clavicle fracture?) due to a collision with Jurgen van den Goorbergh) and I found the sound really different and impressive and nice. Nothing like in this video. Too bad it could not be bored out to 999 cc and compete with the four cylinder Japs.
Just the best man
The Foggy Petronas team was the team that brings me to WSBK. A mysterious team until i know it last year. Their bikes is very different compare to the Ducati 999 those years. One thing i really don't understand is the seating position. Does that fit for tall riders (about 6'2") ? Back to those years, i remember that Troy Corser is not tall like that.
I've never been this early! Love your content you two. Fellow rider from USA. Keep making rad videos!
Looks amazing, Sounds like a whipper snippier/Chainsaw.
Lool these comments. Revving it a few times like not even over 4-5k and these people are convinced this is what it sounds like at full pin. "IT DOESNT SOUND LIKE MY INLINE 4 IT MUST BE SHIT" ...ffs The FP1 is a piece of art inside and out.
Look at this wonderful, rare bike. Let's rev the fuck out of the engine while it's cold.
That is a chain saw and wanderful
Double bloody blend!
If I'm correct I remember seeing something about them being sold for 21k just after they quit World Supers. Just to try to get rid of them.
Mmmmmmm. Getting me excited to bolt on a Yoshi system to my MT-09 this year.
Please give me a job 44Teeth 😢😢 you guys get to see and ride the best bikes in the world! Your Living my dream and getting paid for it 😂😂😂😂😂
30k, bout right for the next budget bike battle 😉
David Warner they didn’t specify the budget had to be low! Ha
What has happened to the headstock frame number and the rubbers around the fairing bolts has perished (wonder what other rubber has perished) and is that condensation in the clocks?
I heard there is a huge warehouse somewhere full to the brim with these beauties 👌
I seem to remember James Hayden being snapped riding one, with fire from unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust.
this bike is unreal!
i want this bike...
i'll give my left nut or a kidney!!!!
Only Right Nuts or Livers sorry.
just wow
That swingarm should inspire modern designs.
well I learned something new today! thanks!
I was slightly dissapointed that none of the pipes were rodgered.
That sounds mental, looks wise it reminds me of the new S100RR, just sayin like........

A great piece of motorcycle racing heritage, that sounds like shite and has the colour of a day-glow bogey.
To our U.S. cousins a bogey is the stuff that comes out of your nose when it gets to that chewy texture! Hope this helps.
How can a 3 cylinder engine compete in motogp? 🤔 Does it have enough power?
when talking about track bike excluding rider's experience, HP m torques count with other counter parts inside a superbike..
i dare to say triumph 3cylinder established a higher rpm as compared to parallel twin engine
though the torque is a lot higher
linear exceleration with a higher torque as compared to inline 4, though cant get enough top speed
but i had ride this bike, n dare to say it is a wild stallion waiting to be tamed,
its raw power can rival even a ducati 999 or kawasaki zx10r older version..
but if comparison to electrical things like ktrac kawasaki or other advance stuff in newer version of superbike, or even oil consumption, plese dont
do compare this bike to other production bike which same year...n do ride this bike if have a chance ..
Sick sounding machine. I wojt be trading my FE for it though
Sounds like my whipper snipper
At Lanzante?
It's fascinating to see the bike doesn't have radially mount brake calipers
Neither did a 998r, a couple of years before they appeared on bikes
I wish my weed eater looked like that!
Back then when our government took an opportunity to develop an actual superbike....
Pass
"Final edition pinagale or this.." well since you asked lol
The final edition pinagale is ALL around a better bike and will easily be worth more in the long run. Pretty easy choice lmao.
Edit: the pinagale is already worth more.
Tq for support team petronas..i made malaysia
The millisecond of idle I heard was more impressive than the constant fapping of revving.
All these brain donors, didn't people used to druel over 500 2 strokes, but I'm sure these experts would laugh at them evil beasts.
They obviously need to hear one howl through the gearbox then growl back down.
I came, thanks gents!
Hah to my somewhat inexperienced ears, I thought it sounded like a Ducati at startup (clutch rattling), then.. what?? Yeah, I know, they said it was a 3, but still.
Engine looks abit smokey mate, I'll give you £3500.
Nah, i will take a punt and offer a grand.
Loving all the engine experts here 😂
You do realise that they all hold a UA-cam engineering degree right 🙄😉
I worked making engine parts on every single engine built. Stunning design but flawed. I worked with and spoke to Riccardo engineering, Jack Valentine as well as a few of the other companies behind the race engines as Suter was removed from the project after Petronas found he was having components made outside of the contract they had, it seems. I saw one of the copy cranks after Suter sent it due to a "manufacturing error" and it was not one we even made. I was involved in the change of crank phasing from 120 degrees to 180 degrees (never homologated for racing with 180 degree cranks). The race engines all had to be honed with a cylinder deck plate and done hot to allow for the distortion the race engines had due to the rear facing cylinder head and zero airflow over the engine meaning the cylinders became oval during races. The team would swap engines between races and the engines would need to be rebuilt after every race not just after every round. There would have been less issue if the engine had forward facing exhausts but Petronas were not interested in doing any more work with the project so they pulled out of the road homologation testing and put all of the bikes in warehouses as the over heating problem was even an issue with the road bikes in traffic. The end of what could have been a great little bike that was full of then current Moto GP and WSBK technology. Hell the FTR chassis would have been possibly the best handling road bike at the time too... A great but flawed project.
@@YAMR1M that's why none of the other factories protested the bikes not being on sale before racing as they knew they weren't competitive and wsbk was struggling at the time really corser could get a tune out of one in qualifying at times but as soon as he was battling other bikes on track they'd block him mid corner taking his advantage in that area away and at the time wsbk allowed 1000cc fours to race against 750cc fours it would have been better but then would have got protested against still a real good looking bike to this day
It sounds like my chainsaw 🙈
Thats an awesome chainsaw then😎
I reckon your doing your chainsaw a dis-service!
also my first thought....
Deana Battams Sounds a lot better under load, remember them racing...they sounded so cool.
Deana Battams you have an inline 3 chainsaw?
It´s sounds like two stroke on steroids
There are some 2 stroke superbikes that put out as much HP as some of the most modern 4 stroke superbikes out there. They just pollute like a mofo and make horrid amounts of noise.
You can hear how light the reciprocating mass is, the revs drop off almost instantly. I think that is partly what people are hearing when they say it sounds like a hedge trimmer or chainsaw.
Exactly that
Yea but it still sounds like a weed wacker. Wich is awesome btw
Sounds more like a whipper snipper to me
Lovely sound , thanks for explaining that I learnt a thing today
Sounds like it has a 2 pence piece for a flywheel. And I bet even that's been lightened down to 0.3p.
Possibly one of the nicest chassis FTR made too.. I remember making about 180 cranks for these bikes. The last ones were not homologated 120 degree cranks they were flat plane cranks but as the bikes had no chance of winning no one protested them even though the bike sounded very different due to the firing order. There were 150 that were road bikes not 100 and they never used 50 for race use. The race bikes were part of that 150 that were made though. The bikes never made it officially to the road as they would over heat even after Riccardo engineering were involved in the project so Petronas pulled the plug as they did not want to be liable for the possibility of the bikes puking coolant out when they were being ridden. The bikes handled very well but the power was not much more than a 600 sports bike was producing. Its a shame they ran reversed heads so the pipes exited out of the back of the engine.. The back of the engine was so hot it was unreal but with the intake on front bringing in cold air they had ovality issues when running the bikes. They had to re-create a running engine and used a special jig to hone he cylinders back to being round at operating temperatures. If they ran them with the engines in a more traditional lay out the bike would have produced ore power and been more reliable. They threw new engines into the bike after every session and between race one and race two at every round.
I would love one but like the Yamaha R7 its only because I worked on the parts that went into the WSB bikes.
Awesome insights, big ups for sharing!
Why the name foggy?
@@colinashby3775 FP1 Foggy Petronas after Carl Fogarty who ran their world superbike team... Simple really..
@@YAMR1M thanks. Is he involved now with them bikes at all
@@colinashby3775 Petronas didn't make any more bikes after this one. They only sold a few bikes out of the whole production run and then they took all the bikes to a warehouse and stored them away. Too worried about legal issues with bikes overheating ect. The bikes look and handle great but they were not as powerful as people would have hoped so they abandoned the whole thing including the race team. Loads of stories about the whole project including some cheating and not producing the required number of bikes to meet the number of bikes needed to compete in World Superbike. But they did make the numbers needed and they did also make changes that were not within the rules but as they were not title contenders they were over looked and other teams allowed them keep racing.
Ummm sounds like some very expensive hedge trimmers!
haha it really does hahaha
100% was just going to say this 😂
YEaeh I was gonna say it sounds like a leaf blower.
It's not going to sound like anything if twats keep revving the engine in neutral while it's cold.
My hedge trimmer is 600 bucks and it almost sounds the same haha
Used to have a bath that colour in the 70's
Robert Evans styles come back around. Don’t get your bell bottoms stuck on the pegs when you get to a stop.
it's pretty close to the Celeste Blue of Bianchi bicycles
So were the sink and shitter.
My old housemate did until about a week ago. Red velvet carpets too.
It may be old but it was more than likely quite ahead of it's time
Mike W They has loads of issues with it. Just after the engine was developed, SBK rules changed, upping the CC limit to 1000cc for 4 cylinder bikes. The FP1 was a 900 triple. It had no chance... The cost of redesigning an engine would of been huge, hence why it was miles off the pace. It really was a doomed project right from the start. Such a shame, it was way ahead of its time. If you can find it, the FP1 project documentary is a really good watch.
@@russellgreenie this is what i heard also. because of the regulations they quit.
@@russellgreenie explain to me what on this bike "is ahead of it's time", a reversed head that didn't seem to prove anything?

Holy cats! I remember these, they were almost an urban bike myth. Sauber designed MotoGP bikes converted to WSB triples with engines handbuilt by Suter rode by Troy Corser and backed by Foggy popping up in Malaysian warehouses and old WWII bunkers in Essex...
Chuck Farley
And yet it didn’t ever _really_ feature in the results.

It’s just a proper sexy exhaust set up that’s kinda screwed by the fat tumour underneath it
What about the missing blinkers on the front then..
I remember these at the tail end of Foggy's career. Interesting bike aside, it was definitely a great time to be a WSB fan.
Wow that colour 😃
Sweet roary triple, rattling clutch..."your bike's broken man!" "No its just perfect." Love it!

Had all the right ingredients but somehow missed the mark. Bloody gorgeous though. I was really excited at the time that Foggy was coming back to WSB and with Corser! I stumped up for tickets and bought a Foggy Petronas cap. In fact I bet I still have it, I'm off to look!
Seen one of these, i work at the BP petrol station about 3 miles away from Silverstone. Absolutely beautiful.
4:08 is when they start it up.
sounds brutal 🔥
Just hear how fast it revs! Sounds like the crankshaft, pistons and rods have about 5 grams of weight to them. Absolutely bonkers!
I never thought to see those make a comeback to popular media. I thought they had disappeard into obscurity. What a thing they were and still are.

There’s a reason you don’t see these bikes on the grid or the street. They SUCK! Low volume, low performance.
For 35k reserve, id at least expect it to have all the fairing bolts! At 2:23 you can see the front bolt to hold the side fairing and belly pan together is missing :/ also the front of the the frame around the headstock bearings is scratched to fuck!
