Why Arsenal Were BETTER Than They Looked Against Atalanta

- Опубліковано 19 вер 2024
- With their talisman out for the foreseeable, Arsenal must mount their latest Premier League (and Champions League) challenge without Martin Odegaard. Both the Tottenham and Atalanta games saw a very different approach, but Adam Clery takes a look at what Mikel Arteta is attempting and shows why this is more about how they're changing than how they're struggling.

I always tell people I'm better than I look
Was going to write this exact thing looking at the title.
Arsenal are a fantastic team, Arteta is a very good coach but so many other clubs like PSG, Inter, Leverkusen etc. exist and it would make for a much more exciting content to be understanding their setups.
This feels and sounds less like a tactical video, and more of a justification of anything Arsenal do is great. Just my opinion.
@Aarya-v5n
Your opinion is shit.
people dont understand that theyre gonna be forced to evolve tactically after losing odegaard. still finding footing but they look solid
Vs Atlanta🤣🤣🤣inter thrashed them 4-0
@@ShawnGitahi?? Atalanta is a very good side, no team that wins the Europa League the previous season is a bad team.
@@ShawnGitahiAnd Atalanta Thrashed Liverpool. Liverpool drew city twice . Football doesn't work that way
Seeing how good Calafiori is at interceptions , driving forward with the ball, finding space and passing. I wonder if he could be utilised to compensate in some way for Odegarrd's absence.
Powering through a press or running from defense into midfield is much more different than receiving the ball in between the lines and in n half spaces and turning and driving with the ball.
That's in a farmers league dumb dumb
Poetry requested:
Arsenal wear red
City wear blue
No Martin Odegaard
Means we’re in the poo.
Good video, fair assessment and I agree we were one decent finish away from a big win against a side that battered LFC and Leverkusen. It’s what we did at City last year, if Trossard had seen the ball to Martinelli with about 10 mins left he’d have had the chance to win it for us. I don’t hold out much hope of a win at the Etihad but I just don’t want the game swung on some nonsense onfield officiating or ridiculous VAR call. Love how fans of other teams hate when you talk about how good our manager is.😂
I think Calafiori is that un-pressable 2nd guy who can play in pockets (after Odegaard). He did more for our buildup in 20 minutes than Timber did in 70. Nothing against Timber , I love his versatility but his best position is RB (allows him to properly overlap) and White should be rested because he's looked mediocre in the last 2 games after the international break.
Hopefully we see a Timber-Saliba-Gabriel-Calafiori partnership sometime soon.
Was hoping for that against Atalanta. He definitely not doing that against city thi
Even though I rejoice in the fact that Arsenal have learned how to defend properly again under Arteta, I think the really remarkable thing about the Atalanta game was how it made Saed Kolasinac look like a good player, when I think about how poor he was in his latter days at Arsenal. Good as Odegaard is, the manager really should be able to find a way to get the team on the ball even when he's not in the team. I'm sure he will.. well yeah he will, maybe after the City game.
What did Saed do in the match?
@@TheKh65 his team kept a clean sheet, that's all you can ask of a defender
@@josephkambourakis exactly, so I don't get why he is getting a special shout out
Thanks, Adam, for another great explanation of why Odegaard is so vital to the style of football Arsenal play.
I like the fact you talked about why Arsenal didnt go for a striker
Why buy rice whi can't hold the ball, can't carry forward, can't dribble only good at side pass, back pass, anyhow pass? Can't even take a proper free kick.
rice is terrible. West Ham mugged Arsenal off
@@HappyBob701 Then why has he been consistently praised as a bargain buy (The "Lets give West Ham another 30 million" jokes) and currently one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, if not the world?
I dare the media to actually criticise Arsenal 💀
I was at this game, while it was an interesting game and were incredibly defensively solid it is clear that ø is our most important player
It’s like you only cover Arsenal games these days
It doesn’t hurt to tell the truth…
The level of arsenal glaze is crazy.... Why can't people just say "yeah arsenal were pretty bad without odegaard" no it's always oh they weren't that bad. Yes they were. They were a missed penalty and a Missed follow up from losing, deservedly.
@@niksutliffyou can be bad but still be better than how you looked
It’s fun to watch defensive greatness as well.
Arsenal need to evolve without Odegaard, if we cannot do without him and win games, we are not ready to be a complete XI, city without KDB do suffer sometimes but they still win regardless. we cannot afford to be a one man team and besides odegaard isn't messi esque tbh.
I honestly think Zinchenko would be in Odegaard's role if he wasn't injured. With Vierra gone, it's either him or Gabriel that would have subbed for Odegaard in a game. We wouldn't have to worry about Zinchenko's defensive shortcomings in that right-8 position as much and he could still play a killer ball.
Arteta needs to give Nwaneri a run of starts. Just such a tough schedule of games to do it in. I get the sense that Arteta is worried about destroying the kid's confidence if the games don't go our way
Would playing Zinchenko as replacement for Odegaard work ? He is very good on the ball going forward and would help in organizing the press too
Never understood why this tactic isn't practiced. Most of them have skills and ability to play in other positions, but managers keep them in regular obvious roles. I think Zin would be excellent as a midfielder, but maybe it's down to the individual's preference.
Smith-Rowe was the player to do it but you clowns sold him
@@HappyBob701 We love Smith Rowe, but logically it was the right decision. He has too much competition at Arsenal and he was constantly injured. Fulham takes a lot of that off his shoulders and will allow him to shine.
I'd argue that even with Odegaard in the team, a strong striker would do Arsenal a world of good. Having someone in the mold of Isak/Gyokeres/Osimhen up top and a midfield of Rice, Odegaard, Havertz would significantly improve them.
Man I wish we'd gone in for Frenkie De Jong while the situation at Barcelona was still chaotic. It's starting to stabilize now and I doubt he'll want to leave just to play second fiddle. Though I have no idea of how he'd do in a high press, he definitely has that ability to take the ball in tight spaces and turn and move it forward.
FDJ playing second fiddle to ?? Ødegaard ?? 😂
He's twice the player Ødegaard is.
@Never_Wr0ng FDJ is a phenomenal player but what has he done in the last 2 seasons?
@@TheKh65 Don't put the blame of a poor environment on the player.
Kai Havertz was the worst signing last season......
Great Managers judge players by their ability not performance.
@@Never_Wr0ng you cannot be still slandering havertz after the last 10 months he's had mate
@@cottonwhyy That was my point. Havertz is a great player.
He was crap at Chelsea because Chelsea were crap.
I suspect Arteta wanted us to play like this again to practice for Man City.
Arsenal have 1 position which is absolutely essential to their style of play. So you might think that they would have a backup if the player in that position got serioiusly injured. So what do they do? Get rid of the two players, Smith-Rowe and Veiria, who could have deputised for Odegaard. They have deputies for the goalkeeper, full backs, cenrebacks, defensive midfield, centre forward, wingers, but not an attacking creative number 8. Not too clever of Arteta.
We had Emile smith rowe. HAD 😢
If odegaard is so important for arsenal chances for any sort of cup that means there is clearly lack of depth in squad. Hopefully merino would help in this
Exactly why we should’ve invested when we had the chance , but hindsight is 2020 I guess
@jjel3316 if you could tell me what creative player was available for respectable money, im keen to hear.
Came down to good saves by both teams and Martinelli not scoring clear chances twice.
That match on Sunday will be so boring to watch 😑 and Arsenal may steal it with one goal because their defence is so solid
Arsenal had an issue with technical quality, execution and mentality
Why sell Fabio Viera.
Why Sell Smith Rowe.
They're the closest to Martin Odegard that we had.
Fabio Viera is injured anyways
I think the main problem is more rather squad depth than anything, this injury situation we’ve just came out of kind of shows , if we had invested in the window as heavily as maybe the fan base would have liked a lot of these issues don’t arise due to people coming in and being able to fill in the gaps in personnel play styles instead of trying to convince ourselves relying on a 17 year old Ethan is the answer
It isn't possible to heavily invest without selling more players, who do we keep selling for more squad depth, with prices these days its 2 out for 1 in...
In some fairness your not wrong but our squad depth has gotten better every year, our standards are just rising at a faster rate cos we’re comparing ourselves to city and madrid now. The fact that we can go away to spurs and Atalanta and not concede a goal with all these injuries suggests a level of depth we haven’t seen at arsenal in over a decade. Would’ve been nice to sign another attacker or two of course.
I think the allure of getting top quality players to sign is guarantees from the club that the player will play a significant chunk of the season. Unless you're chelsea, where players sign to sit on the bench for 12 year contracts you really can't do that unfortunately.
@@zaidansari-fi8yx that’s fair but I’m not even talking about a xavi simmons or a gavi or anything as such as they rightfully so won’t want to play second choice but I think a more profound solution then just merino in the midfield should’ve been pursued? Players like inters conaloglu , gyokeres players happy playing at that level
Why doesn't he give Ethan nwaneri a chance in that Odegaard position(already Odegaard is mentoring him)
is Calafiori supposed to be able to do the Odegard part?
His a defender
Rice and Timber and Martinelli are all right footed so they all want to take it inside. You need a left footer there for balance in the attack. Combine that with a midfield saturated with defensive minded midfielders that aren't comfortable holding the ball and just want to release it. Not a fun watch
Martinelli is really finished
Bro, theyre missing 1 players and everybody is collapsing. The hypocrisy of football media.
It's as if you didn't watch the video.
Sloppy passing was tbe issue. The touches were awful😅 Nullified the Atlanta press though but the attack needs to click
Because we don’t have odegaard doesn’t mean we’re not going to play our football anymore. Get someone who can receive the ball in tight spaces and create chances in that CAM role e.g. trossard/ Nwaneri. Going long at this point just shows how scared we are
you clearly doesnt watch the game, Leo is superb in the wing, in the mid, he was subpar
We literally DO NOT PLAY WITH A CAM
JFC what do you people actually watch every week?
@@kunimitsune177 so what does odegaard do on the pitch with saka and havertz??? Is that what CMs do or what CAMs do
I am so scared for martinelli, the guy is now a serious disappointment n its sad.
City could do without KdB and not make every game borefest. You are trying really hard to not anger Arsenal fanboys
Finally some positivities🎉🎉❤😂
Awesome video Adam!
We have a massive, Norwegian shaped hole in our midfield
They score lots of goals against teams in the PL, but when it come to the CL, their attack clearly lack someone who want to score goals and is capable of doing it at a world class level, just look at the Bayern match last season or this Atalanta match . It doesn't need to be a striker, a winger is fine too.
If Arsenal truly think this is enough, i have to question their ambition. They know they aren't good enough, but still decided against investing more in this team. How long are they gonna wait, how much patience do they think fans have for the club lack of success.
I feel they are too rick averse in everything that they do, not only transfers but also tactics. Arteta seem to prefer defensive stability over the team's attack. For example, in the Atalanta match, Martinelli is always asked to track back, so he couldn't counter effectively and when he did have a chance, he was too tired to make the most of it. It was the reason Arsenal didn't win the league, it was the reason Arsenal lose against Bayern and it will be the reason why they won't win anything this season, maybe beyond that too.
lol these have guys have figured out that posting more videos about arsenal is gonna help them get most views
Seems to be working with other football content creators
@@JoshSmithJ19 hey im not complaining
Almost like whichever team is best gets the most views but city are vapid plastic garbage so Arsenal (formerly Liverpool) get all the attention.
Lord knows i needed some copium
Forget to mention Martinelli and Jesus was just giving the ball away constantly. Even with Odegaard them 2 are letting arsenal down bigtime. They both need to be benched till they up there game. We could end up loosing Trossard over Martinelli starting which would be shambles. Trossard doesn't deserve to sit behind Martinelli. TBF Jesus needs replacing every time he plays watching arsenal is very frustrating because we look good moving the ball around beating the press nice passing and moving looking like were about to score then Jesus just gives the ball away so so cheaply most the time with too many touches or bad pass or spoons it. Id put sterling ahead of him and see what sterling can do for us as he's known to score goals with his great positioning.
Atalanta were far superior , so much for the Premier League being the best league in the world !
Crappy analysis. Glossing over a Crap play. Park the bus. Launch it to the front and hope for the best.
Raya has to be in consideration for the top 5 keepers in the world, maybe even top 3. World class keeper
Id argue that you do need to look at how many second balls were won 7:13 , or even how many times after the unsuccessful pass did arsenal win the ball within 5 seconds... The long ball works well with Rice and Havertz challenging for the ball ... They just need an extra player to flood the defence to make them "once in a match chances" stronger
👍
Somehow Arteta has managed to be even more boring than Pep - and that takes some doing.
Odegaard Merino Viera* Zinny Nwaneri *.... the right 8.
Why don't you just rename the channel OFFICIAL ARSENAL TACTICS CHANNEL?
They lost just martin odegaard now put into context the amount of first team players Chelsea and United lost last szn.
Cough newcastle cough
*season
We’re 2nd neither of those teams were second don’t compare us to them bums
Yeah and this right here is the reason y'all are not good enough to be first
Spot on but Rice Jesus and Martinelli and quite a few just playing bellow best on ball as well. Squad is thin. We ain't winning the league
You can always count on youtubers giving praise to Arsenal for making a 0:0 draw... Or to win matches by scoring corners, guess which club gets ignored, even if the win trophies🤔🤔🤔
So we clearly have a MØ problem, here is my opinion: First of all your videos are amazing, now, we can't play the ball long if the number 9 is short, Havertz should be the 9 right now. Our defense has been incredible and if it keeps performing that way we can win games. But just like against Tottenham, Trossard could be the solution for now, against them e did good, not great, not at the level of MØ, but he did good. We can also risk it all and give a chance to Nwaneri, i think he got the quality, but after Man City. One last thing, Martinelli need to wake the sake up.
It is a "we're fucked"
The closest player we have to odegaard is nwaneri but arteta chose to put a 6'4 clumsy striker in his stead . Arteta is very stubborn in his way of thinking , he always sticks to the same players and tactics. Another is gabriell martinelli who was so bad in every game of the season but still starts over trossard its quite shocking what arteta chooses to stick to
the only way nwaneri plays is if we winning 5-0 or all our attackers are litterally injured
Havertz played that position at Leverkusen. He is left footed and a natural replacement for Odegaard.
@@domagojhrgovic7419he's not Leverkusen Havertz anymore he doesn't have the on ball creation to replace Odegaard. He plays well wherever he is placed but he is much better up front
@domagojhrgovic7419
Did he though? At Leverkusen he was predominantly a 10. We don't play with a 10.
He played that position more at Chelsea, the worst period of his career.
@@bna919 He was upfront together with Jesus, just on the right side.
Come on man. Lets not fuck around. They sat back and defended all game and were shit during their couple of attacks. Deserved to lose
Facts
No one said that about Jose’s Chelsea
Martinelli had a clear chance to score so i can use your same logic
You literally do not know the first thing about football.
@kunimitsune177 I don't know loads. But I do know that sitting back against a not great atalanta team when your team has wayy more quality. Probably isn't the best move. And sorta kinda makes you look shit
Sunday will be boring Mach as usual
LMAO they weren't good. Stop trying to sugar coat it. If it wasn't for Raya, Arsenal would have 0 pts.
Brah you guys gotta stop the glaze, it's getting ridiculous now, they were poor.
