31:25 - this is exactly what sums up a champion: Take your chances and hurt your opponent when you can. Thornton in his prime had that special ability. Sadly he's not competitive anymore (on this level).
I feel like this is the upset that everyone forgets about, Van Gerwen was in the prime of his life at this time, he was the favourite by miles and no one expected a performance like this from thornton
@@FanBoyStudio369 The same way you can win a match with a lower point average or the same way you can win a tennis match by winning less games. If the ones you lose, you lose by a lot and the ones you win, you win them tighly, it may very well happen. In this case, you can win sets by 1 leg (3-2) and lose them by 3 (0-3). In a "first to X sets" match, you can win X sets by 1 leg and lose X-1 sets by 3. If you do the math, you can end up with a negative 2*X-3 leg difference. E.g., in the world championship final you can win 7 sets by 1 leg (going to a sudden death in the final one) and lose 6 by 3. 7*1-6*3=-11
Underrated match.
One of the best major finals ever played!
Thanks for uploading.

Agree 100% he WAS a fantastic player on his day though.
Beat both Taylor and mvg in major ranking finals the only man to do so I believe
The fact that Robert won 16 legs and Mike won 20 is what proves Thornton took his chances
@@stevewood238Barney was another person who best Mvg and Taylor in a major final
@@stevewood238 I believe Anderson and Cross did too, but Cross beat MVG after your comment so that doesn’t count I guess.
One of, if not the best, darts matches I have ever seen.
Little mistake: You wrote '2012 World Grand Prix final' into the thumbnail😅
Beautiful to relive this exciting final, but also sad to think that one of my favorite players is not on tv that often anymore.
i feel with u bro
My first ever Grand Prix. Loved this final so much
Van Gerwen should pause the video from the start and look at his throw....it's changed recently.
@Bengaltiger1 it hasn't been shit at all, he's still been playing well...
@@jake5134 its been poor by his standards though been a while since he consistently averaged in the 105-110 range
I’m no MVG fan but boy it must have hurt him not winning that one. So many missed darts at crucial times which could have changed the outcome.
Thank you PDC for uploading this. One of the best major finals ever played I think🎯🔥 Love the darts!🎯💪🏻
What a game. I like Thornton's fighting spirit.

8:33 Great reaction from the Thorn 😎
Seems strange watching Thornton now..
Very nice final
How good Thornton hit the D20
What about uploading the semi final from 2017 between whitlock an Suljovic, would love to see that
What a great game
Describing Thornton as a terrier is pretty spot on. Scrappy for sure. No quit in him.
Oh, set play. You gotta love it or hate it.
0-3, 3-2, 3-2, 0-3, 3-1, 0-3, 3-2, 1-3, 3-1.
16-20 in legs
Wait! I don't know it's possible to win many sets with fewer legs.
@@FanBoyStudio369 you can win the world title despite your opponent winning 11 legs more thhan you

It's so much more exciting than leg play because of games like this. Makes timing more important
WOW !
i think Roberts ear ring is knurled
Great match but the crowd were so disrespectful
wow
START TROSSARD
8:45 Very biased commentator
Roberts Scottish and the commentators English😂 Not sure why he would be being biased
Mardle always just talks absolute crap
