I have a 2000 f150 5.4 when I leave it sitting for a week without starting, then I start it. The truck smokes a lot for about 30 minutes. After that it goes back to normal and if I start it regularly, it doesn’t smoke. Also the coolant level drops overtime. I checked for mixture in the oil and coolant but all clean. Did a block cooler sniff test but it shows good. The truck drives good and no overheating issue. I don’t know if I should just use a little bit of the head gasket sealer to see if it works out. Also I have heard that it’s hard to take out one of these engines for a swap, is that true? Thanks
kchilz32 Don’t put stop leak in it. There is only one way to see if there is a head gasket issue. The other ways don’t work well. You have to take it by a place that does emissions testing. They will take the radiator cap off, start it up, and hold the probe that goes up the exhaust pipe near where the radiator cap goes. If there is any hydrocarbons it’s bad. Another thing that can make it smoke on start up is the valve guides and seals.
1970chevelle396 so the blue liquid carbon test won’t work? (The one that goes where the radiator cap is). Also, would the valve guides cause slow loss of coolant? Thanks again and great video. Also how hard to pull the engine out?
kchilz32 The blue liquid only works if it’s a real bad leak. That’s why I never use it. When it’s a real bad leak you will know just by how bad it runs. The valves will not cause it to lose coolant. For me it wasn’t to hard to pull the engine out, But I’ve been a mechanic for 27 years.
1970chevelle396 thanks so much! I’m leaning towards a minor head gasket leak. I will see if a shop can do the emissions sniff test and make sure it is but if it is I don’t know if I should just drive it till it gets worse or get it done as soon as possible. I’ll probably go towards the route of a used engine and just swap it and rebuild the old one
The problem was from the factory they weren’t tightened down tight. Then they come lose and since they only have 1/4 of an inch of threads, then the plugs blow out. If you replace the spark plugs at like 75K miles it won’t blow them out. I worked on nothing but Ford trucks at my last job. So I know very well about the spark plug problem.
Wow you know your stuff. I just bought a used 2001 5.4 Ford Expedition 4wd with 150k miles for $ 1,200. Bucks from a buddy I think that’s a great deal? He just put in new plugs and wires on top of plugs. But I need to put in a new intake manifold leaking coolant at the cross over I guess that’s a common problem for it. Is there anything else you might think about for me to do for maintenance or whatever idea. ? I don’t have much money. So probably I just go with it and when something really breaks then fix it. I just thought it would be fun to have a truck again and it’s nice and roomy too it runs great as far I can tell. A have truck not for speed just cruising around and driving off road fun.
Ok 1970 plan on that for now and the engine runs great too. I ll just replace the intake manifold as new Ford one. And save my money for the future if something else goes. Do you have suggestions on what gear oil and transfer case fluids would be best in the Ford ? Maybe just use The Ford brand ? which is good for another 100 thousand miles again. ?? Just a question about the 4 WD when I am in N and put it in 4 WD Low there is a good clunk sound from it ?? Is that normal maybe for a big Ford Expedition 4wd? I won’t be off roading it all the time but just want to be sure ? Thanks for your help and texting me back.
William E I think the clunk sound is normal. I hardly ever put anything I’m working on into 4 wheel drive. With the oil , You either need to look it up as to what it takes or buy the Ford stuff. Transfer case probably takes automatic transmission fluid.
1970chevelle396 The 4WD is when I stopped in put in Low then it has a clunk sound only then I drive it in the dirt Not working on the truck. On 4WD High it is regular click light sound but all is good. On the diff fluids I probably well just stick with the Ford brand to keep it going. Etc. I don’t have any money extra for anything $$$ Thanks again
Hi... Is there a way... Machine... to know when an engine is blown or a piston needs replaced? I don't know much so not sure if my question makes sense as far as parts go... Thanks.
great job Ken...this is something I can't stand to do.. is work on a car or truck..I don't have enough patience...i would just pay someone like you to do it for me lol...nice work
L&L welding and fabrication I would much rather do welding & fabrication, but the jobs don't come up very often. And I can make more money working on cars
Was there no way to hang the A/C compressor and not crack the lines to get the motor out? I'm about to do a PI head / intake swap to mine, and am debating leaving the motor in the truck, vs pulling it out. After 250k on mine, I'm assuming my rear crank seal looks less than stellar... either way it would be nice to know... I can't vac my system here so that would be an added cost for me. Thoughts?
Ken, do you know a rough estimate would be if I took this to a Ford dealership to have all that work done? I just blew a head gasket. So I’m considering what to do next. Thanks!
I have no idea what it would cost. There is different labor rates in different areas. And what I charge and what someone else charges probably would be different.
If you don’t mind me asking but how much in all did this cost you my truck just recently blew headgaskets and I’m going to be pulling the motor out and rebuilding it and getting the heads machined is what scares me on cost
I don’t really know what the cost was. This was done for a customer and the customer paid for all the parts. The main thing you want to do is to have those spark plug inserts put in. It kind of depends on what a machine will charge for that.
1970chevelle396 mines actually not the triton motor it’s before triton mine is the 4.6 Windsor block not exactly sure what that means but I like it better than triton engines again thank you for the video of how to tear down and put back together.

Hello awesome and informative video. I do have a question, I have a 98 f150 4.6 I got it from my uncle. It has a ton of oil buildup on the passenger side all right under my headers and all I’ve by the oil pan. I checked the plug, the pan bolts and can’t seem to find where the leak is coming from. Any advice would help immensely.
Humboldt Rootz The only thing you can do is clean it up real good. Then drive it and keep checking for oil leaks. Then maybe you can find where it’s coming from. Could be the valve cover gasket or the timing chain cover that’s leaking.
OK so the 5.4 is better for pulling stuff BC wen I got the truck there was a 4.6 in it and that motor took a crap on me and I don't really know much about fords
My 4.6 triton on a 97 f150 has pressed on cam gears and can't be replaced without changing the cams... just great. So I found a set of heads with cams from a 4.6 romeo engine, gonna be doing a head exchange job on it when in the beginning all i needed was a timing chain and gear replacement. Just like this job always one thing leads to another, in the end, you end up with more work than expected replacing more parts than expected... I hate when that happens.
1970chevelle396 Now that you mentioned it, the heads I bought hasn't had the insert job done on it. What does it basically cost to have that done? So far the heads look real good cams and all and I plan on sending them out to have em done like you did yours. I'm not gonna do any block work cause it's good, only to clean it up for the heads.

Gary Riefle I think it was around $300 to have both heads done. If you don't have them done at any time they can blow the spark plugs out. Some machine shops might be cheaper.
1970chevelle396 wish it was that cheap to do mine. My 97 has its 7 and 8 cylinders with stripped plug holes to where i can't remove the old plugs. Shop wants 400 just for those two.
I have a 2003 Ford Expedition 5.4 V8 that is leaking oil in the valley. Took it to get checked out and they said my head gasket is leaking oil. You have any recommendations beyond spending thousands to replace the head gasket? The price they quoted is more than the vehicle is worth.
myriadcorp I would think it’s something else. Maybe valve cover gaskets leaking from the front or rear of the valve cover where it’s getting into the valley of the engine. Hard to say without seeing it.
I just had the valve cover gaskets replaced. I am praying its them. The shop I took it to said it's oil leaking from the head. My option is to just drive it with the leak until coolant gets in or spend thousands to fix it. The car is at most worth 4k right now. I just don't know what to do. Here is the replacements I did in 2017-2018. Struts, sway bar links, intake manifold and gaskets, valve cover gaskets, plugs and coils, pcv lines and valve, water pump, thermostat, belt, and driver side window controls. Right now the leak is slow and it's just oil no coolant.
myriadcorp I’ve done lots of Cylinder head jobs on the Ford Triton engines. Not one of them was for an oil leak. I think it’s coming from someplace else. They might have damaged one of the valve cover gaskets when they put it on. There is very little room to get the right side valve cover off. So maybe that side partially came out of the cover when they put it back on.
Same here on my 98 F150 4.6. From what I've heard F150 did not go to coil on plug until mid 99 model year. Unless, maybe California emissions are different? Think maybe Explorers had COP earlier, not sure. Also with vehicles of this age, unless purchased new, previous owner could have swapped out the engine. Just sayin'.
Richard Gates I’ve done the E250 vans before. It can be done without pulling the engine. Some of the head bolts wont come all the way out. I pulled them up as high as they would go and put a rubber band around them to keep them all the way up. Then you can pull the head. When you put it back together you have to do the same thing.
Thanks, that sounds doable. I just need to make sure I've got the right tools before I start. With over 300,000 miles I want to see how far it will go. A seemingly simple thing like changing the front shocks and sway bushings can turn into a major ordeal.
Thanks. I didn’t spend anything since the job was done for a customer. I can’t remember what the engine cost since he paid for it, and it’s been a few years ago now.
I have a '00 grand marquis with 164k, I want to get it to 300k...I'm losing oil somewhere, don't think I'm burning it, and I don't see any leakage anywhere.
The one I may be getting from a friend that needs the passenger head gasket replaced because cylinder 3 has coolant dumping into the cylinder has coil packs not coil on plugs
I had feared this issue on my 2000 Lightning when I 1st bought it late last year. I took it in today to have the spark plugs swapped & sure enough the mech tells me the holes already have the inserts & advised me to get the heads replaced at some point in the coming months depending on much I drive it. So now i'm like damn should I pay the probably $3500 it'll cost to replace them or just trade the truck in & get a small car that gets good gas mileage...
Nice to see someone who has been the trial and error route your experience is priceless

Man...you are really good... I subscribed !
+bmac65 Thanks
Never had a spark plug failure out of a 4.6 or 5.4 but then again I follow factory spec for the spark plug to
The problem was from the factory they weren’t tightened down tight. Then they come lose and since they only have 1/4 of an inch of threads, then the plugs blow out. If you replace the spark plugs at like 75K miles it won’t blow them out. I worked on nothing but Ford trucks at my last job. So I know very well about the spark plug problem.
nice information! you sound like you are from Seattle.
Arty berkhoff I live near Sacramento California.
Are you replacing the clutch plate?
No
Hey bud big job right there, good idea to do the inserts before they become a big hassle. Cheers
William E $1,200 is a really good deal. I would just replace the intake manifold and thats it. Since it has new spark plugs already.
Also too bad you don’t leave close enough to help me work on my truck too. Lol thanks again
William E I think the clunk sound is normal. I hardly ever put anything I’m working on into 4 wheel drive. With the oil , You either need to look it up as to what it takes or buy the Ford stuff. Transfer case probably takes automatic transmission fluid.
1970chevelle396
The 4WD is when I stopped in put in Low then it has a clunk sound only then I drive it in the dirt Not working on the truck. On 4WD High it is regular click light sound but all is good.
On the diff fluids I probably well just stick with the Ford brand to keep it going. Etc.
I don’t have any money extra for anything $$$
Thanks again
Excellent video, love all this info!
+Marcus Zizzo Thank You
Hi... Is there a way... Machine... to know when an engine is blown or a piston needs replaced?
I don't know much so not sure if my question makes sense as far as parts go... Thanks.
Kind of late here and I bet you have your answer by now, but just in case. You can attempt a compression test on it.
Awesome video! It is very very helpful! Thanks
great job Ken...this is something I can't stand to do.. is work on a car or truck..I don't have enough patience...i would just pay someone like you to do it for me lol...nice work
L&L welding and fabrication I would much rather do welding & fabrication, but the jobs don't come up very often.
Thoughts?
therealpimpskillet You might be able to hang the A/C compressor out of the way. It’s easier to remove it.
I gotta 04 f150 that needs a rebuilt head... oh boy this looks intense
+kick-man edwards There actually not to bad to do.
Someone give me a 2008 ford f150 with 4.6 engine but the oil pan has a hole and Someone tell me to replace the engine cause they say the engine broke a piston or something like that . Any ideas or what's the best to do plz,?
Probably best to replace the engine.
1970chevelle396
I have a 1998 ford F150 truck and piston 1 and 4 are low in pressure and are misfiring because of it what do you think is the cheapest way to fix it
+Anthony Fish It probably has a valve problem. The heads would have to be taken off and taken to a machine shop.
What's a better motor the 5.4 or the 4.6 ?
They both hold up just as good. But your better off with the 5.4 since it has more power.
OK so the 5.4 is better for pulling stuff BC wen I got the truck there was a 4.6 in it and that motor took a crap on me and I don't really know much about fords
How much do you charge
My 4.6 triton on a 97 f150 has pressed on cam gears and can't be replaced without changing the cams... just great. So I found a set of heads with cams from a 4.6 romeo engine, gonna be doing a head exchange job on it when in the beginning all i needed was a timing chain and gear replacement. Just like this job always one thing leads to another, in the end, you end up with more work than expected replacing more parts than expected... I hate when that happens.
Gary Riefle Make sure you have the spark plug thread inserts put in it. Its well worth doing that.

How much does something like this cost, parts and labor total?
I don’t know because I didn’t buy the engine. The labor rate depends on where you live.
Thanks. Hopefully that's it. I think we are going to put some die in the oil and use a black light to find where the leak is coming from for sure.
@@1970chevelle396 would you have any tips on removing those valve covers?
my 98 4.6 doesnt have coiul over plug. still have 2 coil packs, 4 cyl each
Same here on my 98 F150 4.6.
Great work!
Thanks
How much money did it cost at the machine shop for the work they did on each head?
Peace Joy It was $400 and something for both heads. I use to have a machine shop that did it for about half of that.
need to send mine to you!!!
So the Triton engine is a modular...I've seen a few with blown head gaskets here.
ZIGgassedUP There really not a bad engine once the spark plug threads are fixed. I've only had a few of them with blown head gaskets over the years.
What about an E250 van, is there room without pulling the engine? I've got one of the lemons that needs a good head job.
A seemingly simple thing like changing the front shocks and sway bushings can turn into a major ordeal.
how much money did u spent on this? great VIDEO!
Thanks. I didn’t spend anything since the job was done for a customer. I can’t remember what the engine cost since he paid for it, and it’s been a few years ago now.
@@1970chevelle396 ok,I was just wondering how much would it be cause I'm going to do this myself well as much as I can, thanks for replying
Just wanted to say that I have a '98 4.6l and it has coil packs not coil on plug. Not trying to be an a** but thought I'd share that.
I think it might be the first few years of the Triton engines that had coil packs.
Really enjoyed the video learned a lot thanks
2004 for the 3 valve engine with cam phasers
great job , great video!! keep it up!!
+jesus castillo Thank You
Is it the same process for an 08 4.6
+Unarmfever 3 08 should have the 3 valve engine in it that doesn’t have the spark plug blowing out issue.
I changed the head gaskets on my truck and now it won’t start. It ran before now it just turns
Did you forget to put crank sensor sprocket on
I woulve definitely done the plastic timing chain guides.
It didn’t need it.
Nice thanks
Thanks
Awesome, thanks for sharing.
Where do I get the inserts ?
I had a machine shop do the inserts.
Awesome video but I just have to say it your voice sounds exactly like Jeff Daniels 😂
Yeah it does lol. Freakin awesome😎👍
He does doesnt he. I was enjoying his narration plus editing
🤣🤣🤣
Nice work sir!
how much would it cost for a shop to replace the heads?
Jason Sampson Not sure
Jason, I was quoted about $3K a few weeks ago. It's mostly labor, obviously.
hahaha...just the heads for my 2010 were $1300 a piece....
Ouch....are you referring to the cost of buying the heads, or what? I'll probably sell my '97. The cost just isn't worth it.
yes buying the heads...the heads brand new were $1300 a piece...without labor costs..
I have a '00 grand marquis with 164k, I want to get it to 300k...I'm losing oil somewhere, don't think I'm burning it, and I don't see any leakage anywhere.
Most of the time those Triton engines will last 300K.
What is that spark plug inserts? I have a 4.6 99 that I'm gonna pay someone to rebuild
nickyrr78 Who ever does the heads needs to put inserts in for everyone of the spark plug threads. If you don’t it will fail for sure.
1970chevelle396 thx
How much would a job like this cost
alolipa It depends on what state you live in. The hourly rate is different in each state.
Very good nice done good information
candelario diaz Thanks
Where are u located I need this done to my truck
Joseph 26 Henderson I live 45 minutes south of Sacramento
nice video
Thanks
How much time would you say it takes to remove and replace one of these engine?
+Marco Rodriguez Two days
looking good
I have a 98 F150 and no it doesn't have coil over plug but has the coil packs. 2 4 each... 1FTDX1760WKA07900 is my vin number to verify.
Vine Wood I admire the ford Lightning’s rescue that work of art
Smh i feel u too have a blown head gasket on my lightning smh
You sound so much like Jeff Daniels, LOL
Am I the first to say that?
